AT THE PINNACLE OF ACHIEVEMENT

Sweden’s success rests on an unswerving commitment to excellence in R&D and drug discovery. Per capita spend-ing on life science research is the highest in Europe. Swedish universities possess world class expertise in areas ranging from cancer and diabetes research to medical devices and stem cell therapies. Specialist fields include drug discovery in infections and metabolic diseases, im-munology and neuroscience, as well as advanced tools for diagnostics and bioproduction. Sweden is renowned for its high quality clinical trials, biobanks and registers including the world’s largest twin register.

RESEARCH AND BUSINESS HAND IN HAND

A focus on proximity to patients means basic research is often integrated with clinical research, a major advantage when developing new therapies and treatments. A unique model of close collaboration between industry, academia and clinical practitioners has fostered the growth of world leading pharmaceuticals companies like Astra, now a part of AstraZeneca, and Pharmacia, now a part of Pfizer.

EXCEPTIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Sweden has exceptional assets for modern research. Studies of how genetic and environmental factors affect health can probably be conducted more accurately than anywhere else thanks to an extensive network of national health registers and databanks. The stem cell regulatory framework is one of the most research-friendly in the world.

INTRODUCTION 5

A FUTURE FULL OF OPPORTUNITIESA GLOBAL LEADER IN A GLOBAL MARKET

Sweden is northern Europe’s largest and most dynamic life science region with world class companies, internationally acclaimed science, and a proud track record of investments in the innovations of tomorrow. Sweden hosts regional clusters with unrivalled expertise in their fields. Exciting opportunities abound in an environment dedicated to medical innova-tion, drug discovery and pharmaceutical commercialisation.

WELCOME TO SWEDEN – NORTHERN EUROPE’S NUMBER ONE LIFE SCIENCE REGION

CENTRES OF REGIONAL EXCELLENCE

As Swedish life sciences embrace a new era, the sector is buzzing with potential for investors and partners across multiple areas. Numerous groundbreaking projects are ongoing at regional level.

When completed, the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital, will combine with a downtown knowledge centre to strengthen the capital’s position as a world leading life science cluster.

In Lund in southern Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) is under construction. This will be a major European research facility for materials research – a ven-ture that will attract top scientists, experts and companies from around the globe.

Gothenburg is striving for international leadership in re-generative medicine – biomaterials and stem cells –while, in the north, Umeå is a global research leader in infectious disease treatment and sports medicine.

LIFE SCIENCE INITIATIVES FOR TOMORROW’S INNOVATIONS

Major investments are currently under way in Stockholm to develop a 21st century center of excellence – a vibrant knowledge cluster grouping academic institutions, life science companies, healthcare providers and interna-tional research projects. This is made under the common trademark Stockholm Life.

EUROPE’S MOST MODERN HOSPITAL

Scheduled for completion in 2016, the new Karolinska Solna University Hospital will be Europe’s most modern hospital and is the world’s largest public-private part-nership within healthcare. The hospital will be a hub for national university medical education and reinforce the Stockholm-Uppsala region as a leading biomedical center. The goal is rapid knowledge transfer, resulting in higher quality healthcare for each patient.

NEW KNOWLEDGE CENTRE LEADS THE WAY

Adjacent to the hospital, a new city district is being built to serve as a knowledge center for life science – Stockholm Life. Within walking distance, Stockholm Life includes three universities with diverse fields of knowhow and a strong recruitment base – Karolinska Institutet, Europe’s highest ranked university in clinical medicine and pharma-cology, Stockholm University, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

The universities are together with Uppsala University partners in the science for life laboratory – SciLife Lab – a national resource center offering high-throughput ser-vices and research in biomedicine focused on large scale genomics and proteomics, bioinformatics and bio imaging.

Another national initiative is U-CAN, a bio-bank project for tumor and blood samples from different types of cancer. The material is collected before, during and after therapy to make it possible to study the effect of therapy on the tumor. This is run by Uppsala-Umeå Comprehen-sive Cancer Consortium.

LONG-TRACK RECORD OF INNOVATION

Gothenburg has an openness to collaboration between academia and industry, and a great track record of success. If it is the region that gave rise to blockbuster medicines including Losec/ Prilosec/ Nexium, Seloken, Dicumarol, Plendil, the Cholera vaccine, along with drugs such as Brilinta and Abilify. The former was developed in collaboration with Professor Arvid Carlsson, who won the Nobel Prize in 2000 for his work on the dopamine system.

LEADERS IN BIOMATERIALS AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

One of Gothenburg’s key areas of expertise is biomateri-als and implants. This focus was driven by research from Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark of the University of Goth-enburg, who discovered and developed the science of osseo-integration, a key breakthrough in orthopedics and dentistry. Gothenburg has become a key international hub for R&D, design and production of the next generation biomaterials including smart textiles, being used as grafts, bandages or to measure pulse and the immune system.

Stem cells and regenerative medicine is another well de-veloped arena, with companies such as Vitrolife, Cellec-tricon, Novahep and Cellectis. Unique surgical operations and research have been carried out by the researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy. 2012, for the first time ever, a vein grown from human stem cells was transplanted and the first mother-daughter uterus transplant was carried out.

STRONG IN CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH

The region is at the forefront of clinical and translational medicine and has become the leading centre for clinical trials in Sweden. Organisations such as Medtech West and Gothia Forum serve as meeting places and centralised banks of knowledge on clinical and biomedical research in Western Sweden. The Sahlgrenska University Hospital is the most important partner and stakeholder. It is the largest healthcare unit and the largest emergency care hospital in Northern Europe. The hospital is the only one in Scandinavia with a complete transplantation programme for all organ transplants for both children and adults. Construction of the hospital’s new Centre for Imaging and Intervention is expected to be completed in 2015.
