Celebrating Spring!

Looking outside you can spot robins pulling worms out of the groundwhile the rain gently brings shades of green to our lawns and farmfields. As always, spring follows the winter and urges us all to shedour “blahs” and get outside to enjoy all that Mother Nature offers in thisseason of new beginnings.

The activities of the holidays have given way to new events and chal-lenges for your Chamber of Commerce. We celebrated St. Patrick’sDay with a group of friends and a green beer (or two!) Another Lunchand Learn is coming up, bringing our members the opportunity learnabout sustaining a work/life balance. The Father-Daughter Dancereturns at the end of April. I’m already aware of several young fathers

planning for their dates with their daughters – complete with fancy dresses, corsages, and maybe even aride in a limo!

Reserve Friday evening, June 16th, for the Annual Meeting dinner! We’ll have the presentation of awardsto our Leadership Institute graduates. Community leaders and volunteers will be recognized for theirefforts. We’ll give you a synopsis of the work we’ve been doing the past 12 months on behalf our mem-bers. And, we’re working on presenting a dynamite speaker to give us some insights into what it meansto be a businessperson in Iowa. A great dinner at Rastrelli’s Tuscany room and a night out with friendsrounds out the evening. Information will be available soon, so save the date and join us for a night of fun!

The last week of March found us back in Des Moines at the Capitol, talking to the Governor and severallegislators about support for 4-laning Highway 30. The importance of good roads is critical to the growthand development of an area. For example, did you know that the population of Clinton County hasdeclined 20% in the past 30 years? During that same period of time we lost 1/3 of our manufacturing jobsin the county. When Interstate 80 in Iowa and Interstate 88 in Illinois bypassed Clinton, we saw a gradual– but steady – decline in Clinton County.

Did you know that there are folks in the state who would prefer to 6-lane portions of Interstate 80 than tocomplete the remaining 16% of Highway 30 that needs to be done to allow for safer and more economicaltransportation from Chicago to Cedar Rapids? And that it will cost as much money to 6-lane 10 miles ofInterstate 80 as it would take to complete the 4-laning of Highway 30 across the state of Iowa?

CRDC President Mike Kirchhoff presented the findings of an ongoing freight study in 8 counties in south-western Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, and eastern Iowa to our legislators in Des Moines. The study, conducted by East Central Intergovernmental Association and Blackhawk Hills Regional Council, tells thestory very well.

Did you know that the companies who have responded to the freight study transport over $41 billion worthof freight by truck in those eight counties? Among other things, that freight consists of agricultural prod-ucts, pharmaceuticals, electronics, fertilizers, plastics and rubber, cereal and grain, machinery and motor-ized vehicles, and others.

Did you know that the 3 biggest improvements they need to help improve competitiveness are:new/expanded roadways, pavement improvements and dedicated truck routes?

Did you know that industry advice included in the fright plan included road upgrades and increasing infra-structure spending as a requirement for growth?

Did you know that 86% of members of the Site Selectors Guild believe that increased infrastructurespending will have some or significant impact on the corporation location projects considering the UnitedStates?

This is compelling evidence for us to continue to advocate for 4-laning Highway 30.

In our meeting at the Capitol, Governor Branstad thanked the group for our advocacy of this importantproject. Your support of your Chamber of Commerce allows us to support the projects that will increaseprosperity in the Clinton County. Thank YOU for YOUR advocacy of the Chamber!
