The Community Learning Centre (CLC) approach is the creation and promotion of partnerships which provide a range of services and activities, during and after the school day, to help meet the needs of our learners, their families and the wider

community. The aim is to support the holistic development of our students, families and communities.

A new Carpentry group was

welcomed at CVCEC at the beginning of December. This is the second group

to start in the 2018-2019 school year.

CVCEC hosted their first ever student Governing Board Elections. The CVCEC Governing Board consists of two staff members, two teachers, two community representatives, two business representatives and two students. A letter was distributed to all CVCEC students requesting their presence on the 2018-2019 Governing Board. Colorful campaign posters were hung throughout the centre and the students’ campaign strategies were positive and a lot of fun. It was a very close race and all three candidates should stand tall and smile as they made us proud here at CVCEC.

Students from CVCEC were able to experience the effects of smoking through a presentation offered by the Canadian Cancer Society called Nico-Bar. The Nico-bar is designed to help educate individuals on the dangerous side effects of smoking. It is done by having the students participate in hands-on activities, such as seeing and safely tasting some of the harmful chemicals in cigarettes.

CVR

Lip Sync Battle CVR’s Student Leadership hosted a lip-sync battle as a fundraiser, with all profits going

to La Bouffe Additionnelle, a community organisation in Huntingdon dedicated to supplying food for those in need, especially during the holiday season. Students and staff were asked to donate a minimum of $2 to attend the show. The Lip-Sync battle was a huge success with performances from students, staff and sport teams. With a packed audience, CVR raised over $500 in one lunch hour and the NFSB donated an additional $150 towards the cause. Well done CVR students and staff for making this

possible and helping many deserving families in our community!

HowickElementaryHowick Elementary started its Winter Workshop Wednesdays, where five different workshops were organized for Grades 1-6. These workshops are offered by local experts and community members. The time out of the classroom allows the students to explore and learn new skills and gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate and prepare with their teaching partners. The workshops offered were Dance, Art, Science, Hockey and Drama. These workshops will run every second Wednesday between January and May for a total of 8 Workshops. A big thanks to our community partners and support staff for making all this possible!

This amazing lady has been with HSB since 1980. After a very brief attempt at retirement in 2011, Mrs. Pownall realized how much she missed life at HSB and returned. Two lovely and busy grand-daughters later, Mrs Pownall has decided to put down her pen and hang up the phone. The entire staff lined the stairs in the student lounge to say goodbye and see Mrs. Pownall on her retirement exit walk.

HSB said goodbye to Mrs. Pownall just before the

Christmas break.

Mary Gardner School had some unexpected visitors before the holidays as the Chateauguay Fire Fighters honoured the school with a generous donation of $500 to support our students with their healthy snack initiative. The team of firefighters took the opportunity to visit with our students in their classrooms, to sing a few Christmas carols and wish our MGS community Happy Holidays! A great big thank you to them for their generosity!

NOVANova Career Centre has a new display at the entrance of the centre -- the welding and fitting programs VRTEX 360 welding simulator. This machine helps our students learn to weld without the loud noises and the hot flying sparks. With lots of students and community members coming in and out of our centre every day, Nova will be changing the front display every few weeks to showcase the fantastic trade programs we offer.

Holiday magic filled the hallways at Nova the last week of December. The student advisory committee organized several fun and exciting activities for the students and staff, including an ugly Christmas sweater contest, a bake sale, Christmas carols in the

student lounge as well as yummy treats with hot chocolate, cake and cookies.

Prior to the Christmas holidays, our Grade 6 students were challenged to a special art project. Each student was asked to pick a famous painting by a known artist. The

students then participated in a series of art workshops to help them understand perspectives in art and then they were then asked to reproduce the painting. The

results were extraordinary and the experience was one that our students will long remember. Here are a few samples from the outstanding productions!

St. Willibrord

Good Samaritan Boxes St. Will’s WE team collected items to fill Good Samaritan

boxes at Christmas. The committee would like to thank the community for all their generous donations. Boxes were

donated to the local women’s shelter and families in need.

St. Willibrord’s Community partner, Gilles Cloutier, held a fundraiser for the school in December. Teachers, children and the “gangstercats” workout group

raised $730 for the school!

The We team at St. Will is piloting a new system in the cafeteria where each student is responsible to clean their own dishes and cutlery and place the recyclables in the recycling bin. We are working together to reduce waste in landfills and learning to thrive as a community. Way to go team! - The Planeteers

Community Wednesday… The Heart of the Community

Howard S. Billings and Nova collaborated and hosted the Christmas Community Wednesday event in December at Howard S. Billings High

School. The school was buzzing with community members & organizations! Over 20 community organizations were onsite including vocational programs, face painting and even Santa Clause. It was a beautiful

collaborative partnership with all those involved. Thank you to Nova & HSB for making this event a great success!

Visits from Santa! A great big thank you goes to Santa Clause for making special arrangements and visiting our 4-year-old and five-year-old kindergarten students by video conference at Christmas. Thanks to our partnership with First Book Canada, the classes that spoke with Santa received a special Christmas book for their class. (Santa VC)
