Child  Abuse  

  Genie  “The  Wild  Child”  is  an  extreme  example  of  child  abuse.  

  Defined  as  any  act  that  seriously  endangers  a  child’s  physical  or  emotional  well  being.  

  Can  cause  difficulties  learning,  developing  the  frontal  lobe,  and  social  anxiety.

  The  Newspaper  article  above  looks  at  the  psychological  struggle  Genie  underwent.    

Parenting  Styles  Authoritarian:  Drill  sergeant  type  style,  follows  directions  because  mom/dad  said  so.  Kids  often  end  up  unhappy,  fearful,  or  poor  communication  skills.    

Authoritative  

 Encourages  kids  to  be  independent,  still  have  limits  and  controls  (the  best  form).  Kids  have  self-­‐control,  cheerful,  self-­‐reliant.    

 Most  Beneficial  parenting  style  

Neglectful  

 Uninvolved.  Kids  are  often  immature  and  it  is  linked  to  delinquency.

Indulgent  

 Highly  involved,  but  place  few  demands  or  controls,  kids  do  what  they  want.    

 Kids  rarely  learn  respect,  no  control  over  behavior,  and  can  become  egocentric.    

Attachment  Theory  -­‐Early  life  experiences  with  caregivers  shape  our  personalities  

-­‐Having  secure  attachment  to  a  caregiver  over  the  first  year  of  life  has  important  consequences

  Gender  Roles  are  sets  of  expectations  for  males  and  females  

  The  way  men  and  women  dress  and  act.

  Plays  a  major  roll  in  development  and  exposure  

  Having  a  Higher  S.E.S.  provides  a  higher  chance  for  success  in  academics  

Adolescence  

  Adolescence  is  the  stage  of  life  defined  as  “storm  and  stress”  

  Became  a  Distinct  stage  of  life  in  the  20th  Century

Frontal  Lobe  

  The  decision  maker  

  Continues  Develop  until  we’re  25  

  As  we  mature,  our  frontal  lobe’s  ability  to  think  through,  inhibit,  and  plan  our  actions  gradually  improves  

Bulimia  Nervosa  

  Bulimia  Nervosa  is  a  cycle  of  binging  and  purging  

  Often  because  the  person  is  unhappy  with  their  body  type  

  Causes  mouth  sores,  loss  of  teeth,  esophageal  ulcers  and  cancer  

  Body  distorted  Image  

  Depressive  and  Anxiety  disorders  in  anorexia  Nervoas  and  Bulimia  Nervosa    

  Bulimia  anorectics  are  most  likely  to  have  anxiety  and  depressive  disorders.  

Substance  Abuse

  If  couples  can  stand  the  first  4  years  of  marriage,  the  divorce  rate  significantly  declines  

  Couples  are  less  intimate  &  happy  in  the  transition  to  parenthood  

  Communication  is  key  

  Commitment  to  ones  success  and  the  other’s  life  greatly  helps  marriages.
