From the President,

i’ve never been much of a runner, but after a couple of years of rotating

between the elliptical machine, treadmill, and bicycle at the gym

on the campus where i work, boredom had set in. i needed to fi nd

something to shake up my workout routine. something to challenge

myself. A goal to work toward. After doing some research online,

i registered in May to run the Fox Cities half Marathon in Appleton

in september.

i was fortunate that my husband, ben, agreed to take on the

challenge as well. we trained together, taking longer and longer runs

each sunday with shorter runs most weeknights. in late september,

we completed the 1-mile course with a group of over 100 other

runners. it wasn’t easy—my legs ached and i struggled with the wind

and chill—but when we were fi nished, it was quite a high. i doubt i

had run even miles consecutively more than a handful of times in my

life prior to my decision to pursue this goal, and now i can handle that

distance with ease. My clothes fi t a little less snugly. And i got to spend

some wonderful hours outdoors exploring my neighborhood, rather

than bracing for another treadmill workout. the rewards were well

worth the time and pain i’d invested during my training period.

looming in the not-too-distant future for our class is our

10th reunion in June 2008. if you’re looking for something to break

the monotony in your life, or if you’d simply like to reconnect with

(or meet!) your ’99 classmates, consider volunteering to serve on

the reunion committee. Just like training for a half-marathon, we

can position ourselves for a successful reunion by beginning our

preparations early and working towards the long-term goal over time

(we’ll likely begin work in earnest shortly after the fi rst of the year).

there is much to be done, and many hands make light work.

while serving on the reunion committee certainly takes some

time, i can promise you that the benefi ts are also worthwhile. e-mail

me at [email protected] if you have questions or are interested in

serving. i look forward to hearing from you.

Ted Shen married attorney Hwannie Lee (Chicago ’99) in June at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Karen tells us that Jeff Ding, Jeff Steeves and his fiancee, John Garber and James Mok ’98 were in attendance, as was Donald Trump, who walked right by the ceremony. Despite having played pong through most of med school, Ted still managed to land a coveted spot in an ENT residency program.

Neelu Jain is having a grand ‘ol time in nearby Santa Monica. She helped run and grow a yoga company for a couple of years after she graduated from the MBA program at UCLA. Neelu now works as an independent consultant writing business plans and working with traditional and conscious businesses. She also teaches yoga one day a week and recently founded www.allergyhaven.com.

Also in the region is Melissa Nagare, who goes to school in Southern California. She expects to finish up her Doctor of Chiropractic and Masters in Oriental Medicine by next year.

Victoria (Dahir) Zak hosted a mini-reunion this past summer at her wedding to Brian Zak in Sonoma, CA. They currently live in downtown Denver, CO where she just took a new job with a software company called Local Matters. Melissa attended the wedding, as did bridesmaids Lauren Cornella and Elizabeth Tedesco, and ’99s Ada Anon, Jennie Hume Orr, Karen Ho Cobbett, Carolyn Wang and Lauren Williams.

They also celebrated Lauren C. being named Chief Resident of her Anesthesiology Residency Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Liza becoming engaged while she was in California for Vic’s wedding. Muhammad Hutasuhut just started business school at Harvard. He spends weekdays in Cambridge, MA and on most weekends, he commutes to Charlotte, NC where wife Catherine McCarthy Hutasuhut is now practicing after she graduated from law school at UVA—Ah love! The couple recently bought a home in Charlotte. Reagan Abigail, their 7-month old lab, whose favorite thing is to wake Muhammad up in bed whether he wants to be awake or not, claims to be the true head of their household.

In June, Cat and Muhammad went to Sara Carmichael’s wedding where they caught up with Lauryn Zipse, Kevin Findlan, Marc Bruni, Jeannine Murray Roman. Muhammad and JC Cerna ’98, Lauryn’s husband slipped away for a bit of the wedding to watch the world cup—such devotion. In August, Muhammad and Cat traveled to Morocco and the UK, where they hiked the mountains around Marrakesh and then King Arthur’s Seat in Scotland, thanks to a great tip by Kevin.

Muhammad and Cat made their way out to Los Gatos, CA, where Justin Evans married Angela Sherry (Stanford ’97) on September 3rd. Lee Bronsnick, Jon and Doug Lee, Jeff and Holly Munsie, Duncan Simmons, Dave and Adrienne Wagner attended the wedding. Angela and Justin met while they were in business school at Stanford and are now living in Menlo Park, CA. Justin works at a private equity firm in San Francisco while Angela

works at MicroPlace, a new subsidiary of eBay that will provide financial services to the working poor in developing countries.

While Cat and Muhammad were out on the West Coast for Justin Evans’ wedding, the two visited Xiaojing Wang. Jing lives in Oakland and has been busy travelling for fun and for work as a policy analyst and advocate, focusing on immigrant rights and health policy. Since moving to the Bay Area for graduate school in 2002, Jing has immersed herself in the Left Coast lifestyle, dabbling in everything from amateur DJ’ing to tax consulting for the not rich and trying to be famous. She is thinking about relocating overseas and hopes to find a job either in Beijing, China or Mexico City.

Cat reminded me that the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City had invited Anna Tsouhlarakis to show her work as part of their Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition. Catch the show through March 7th. Anna and Daron Carreiro ’02 currently live in New York City, where she chairs the Art Department at The Browning School. She has upcoming exhibitions at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the American Indian Community House Gallery in New York, and at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ. This summer they traveled to Greece, went on a safari in Tanzania and tracked gorillas in southern Uganda. Anna tells us that Teresa Nugent, who

Speaking of artists, Llewelynn Fletcher and her partner, Kate, moved to Providence, RI from San Francisco three years ago. She continues to lead art workshops with her mother, traveling every year to places like Kauai, Italy, France, and Cornwall. Out of her studio in Providence, Welly investigates recurring images and symbols, such as the ladder and the circle. “The works I have created over the course of the past year are primarily in welded steel, and range from larger-than-life to fit-in-your-hand.” She and Kate recently visited Lopez Island, off of Seattle, WA, where Welly is building a site-specific sculpture. “That project will fill up most of next year, and is a wonderful opportunity. As always, there is never enough time in the studio—but I am more happy than ever with the balance I’ve struck recently.”

Margot Knight, another fellow artist and Seattle native, got married to Todd Coglon on August 12th. They started their life together on wedding-getaway bikes! Margot is currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts in photography at Bard College in upstate NY. Her husband is working on an Architecture Masters at the University of Washington. From October 6 to November 6, Margot will have her photographs on display at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The work will be shown as part of an exhibition about Fabrica, the arts research center of Benetton in Treviso, Italy, where she was a photographer from 2000–02.

Meg and Dave Lysy attended the beautiful wedding of Candice Buckley and Ben Schmitz on October 7th. They were married on the banks of the Mad River and had their reception at the 1824 House Inn at Waitsfield, VT on a picture-perfect fall day. Other ’99s in attendance were Jessica Kelley, Amy Yamner, Claire Heleniak, Louisa Childs, and Sarah Dinwoodey.

Adding to the ’99 wedding news, Stacey Morris Green married Adam Green ’02 on May 28th in a restored barn in Waitsfield, VT. Many Dartmouth folks joined the couple for the big day. ’99s in attendance included Rachel Derkits, who sang in the ceremony; Marc Bruni, who gave a beautiful toast; Jennifer Mui, and Nancy Bloomfield. Alumni of the Cords even serenaded them! It was an absolutely gorgeous spring day, and shortly thereafter, Stacey and Adam moved to Denver, CO, near her hometown of Boulder, where Adam has started his pediatrics residency and Stacey is on the job hunt! If there are any ’99s in the front range, give Stacy a shout.

Aiyana Thompson graduated from law school earlier this summer and found out she passed the bar exam upon her return from Peru where she trekked Machu Picchu. Aiyana just started as an associate with Preston Gates & Ellis in Seattle, WA. When their schedules permit, she and Nicole Tsong, who is a staff reporter for the Seattle Times, get together and reminisce about their FSP to Beijing over a decade ago during our freshman summer.

This fall, Johann Maradey will be performing his Tucker Fellowship with World Wide Humanitarian Aid, an organization dedicated to helping widows and orphans in places such as Belarus, Kosovo, West Africa and Vietnam. He will provide assistance to two groups in Kumasi, Ghana, working as a mentor and teaching assistant at The Benjamin School, a nursing school housed in a rented home where approximately thirty students gather to learn basic to moderately advanced principles of nursing, and assisting with HIV treatment and outreach at the Bomso Church of Christ Clinic. During this time he will be living with The Benjamin School director, a Native Ghanaian, to further immerse himself in the Ghanaian culture.

While at Dartmouth, Johann has pursued his passion for medicine by becoming an Executive

Dear Mr. Dookeram and Class of 1999:

First, let me extend my deepest gratitude to you and the other 99’s for their support of my Tucker Fellowship. I am honored to be sponsored by the Class of 1999.

As an aspiring physician and a native of Colombia, I have always had a deep interest in pressing social issues. My intellectual interests are widespread, yet focused. My plan is to obtain an MD/PhD and subsequently dedicate myself to research and practical medicine. In my mind it has never made sense to follow one discipline too strictly. My character has always driven me to seek answers in different places and from different perspectives.

Balance of mind and body are also of great importance to me. Despite the hectic and fast-paced life of Dartmouth students, I dedicate time to both physical and intellectual interests. Along with this balance of mind and body, I find it important to contemplate upon how fortunate one is to be a Dartmouth student. A good friend and I would often dwell on such a topic on our long awaited walk from Organic Chemistry lab every Wednesday night. As we would walk, elated by the culmination of 6-hours of lab work, a keen sense of responsibility granted us by the prestige of our Alma Mater would become clear to us. For me, responsibility is defined by study of the ubiquity of poverty, both academically and personally.

My purpose in Ghana will be twofold. First, I will mentor and tutor nursing students at the Benjamin School, a school for nurses housed in a two-story rented home. I will be personally responsible for the administration of material pertaining to two courses; Basics of Epidemiology and Community Health and Wellness Needs Assessment. Second, I will be volunteering at the Bomso Church of Christ Clinic, where I will focus on developing HIV outreach and intervention programs. During my stay, I will be living with the director of The Benjamin School, Mr. Timothy Anebakem, and a Native Ghanaian. Alongside his wife, Mr Anebakem will serve as my exchange guardian and mentor in the Ghanaian culture. I will also be under the supervision of other individuals; Mr. Adjei Jesse (at the clinic), Prof. Augustine Tawiah (director of The Bible College of Kumasi), and Rev. John Appiah-Poku (head of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Medical School).

At best, my work as a Fellow will only contribute a small amount to the worldwide issue of poverty. Yet, I hope to help educate thirty nurses who will be the future of the Ghanaian health system and to enlighten a populace whose knowledge of HIV/AIDS is limited despite its clear presence. I designed the experience so that it would be focused. Focused in the scope of what could be done and in location, not only so I could concentrate all my efforts but also to increase the changes of observing positive changes.

Despite the temporal limitation of the internship, I plan to continue assisting the Benjamin School. Being in the early stages of “education-hood,” the school is in need of many basic luxuries, such as a library for nurses, computer, textbooks, etc. With the assistance of my hometown community and Dartmouth network, I plan to fulfill some of these needs.

Once again, thank you for sponsoring my Tucker Fellowship.

Yours In Service,Johann A. MaradeyClass of 2008

Board Member of the Nathan Smith Pre-Medical Society, and researching for a neurobiology lab. He hasdemonstrated his commitment to service by becoming involved with the Tucker Foundation’s Alternative Spring Break Program and Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Internship. He believes that this fellowship will help prepare him for a future career as a physician, while also allowing him to provide specific and localized aid to a sub-Saharan African community struggling to rid itself of HIV and poverty.

We proudly sponsor the humanitarian work of such an involved Dartmouth undergraduate and wish him well as he departs for his fellowship. Through the support of the Tucker Foundation, and the generous donations of classmates who gave directly to our Tucker Fellowship Fund, our $3,000 has enabled the Class of ‘99 to touch lives across the globe in sub-Saharan Africa. If you would like to help us sponsor a Tucker Fellow next year, you can contribute to the project online at: http://www.dartmouth.org/

Mitch Yashiro ’00, and yours truly recently convened at a cozy little bar in New York’s Lower East Side to celebrate the birthday of Tamayo Kawai and her return to New York City from Japan. The group sang “Happy Birthday” in Chinese, Japanese and English. Later in the evening, Tamayo and her sister dazzled the bar crowd with an amazingly accurate rendition of “Dancing Queen” by Abba on the karaoke platform.

Andrew Butterworth and Sean Taylor went up to Boston to celebrate the 30th birthday of Nathaniel Rink on Columbus Day weekend. After a pong-filled weekend, Nathaniel returned to his job as an internet marketing manager while Andy and Sean returned to their respective residences in New York City. Currently, Sean is preparing for the debut of his talk/comedy show called “The Spotlight” and training for the NYC marathon. Part of his training includes eating pizza every day of October and podcasting about it every night. October is National Pizza Month so he recommends you do your part. You can follow Sean ‘doing his part’ by clicking on the Pizza Month link on his website www.thespotlightwithseantaylor.com.

Allison Lee currently lives in Boston, MA and totally loves working at her nonprofit strategy consulting firm where she researches and advises on CSR and philanthropy issues.

Mark Kutolowski is developing a small organization called ‘New Creation Wilderness Programs’ that will teach traditional wilderness skills and contemplative Christian spirituality. Its goal is to help students to learn to live with the land on its own terms and to learn to recognize the sacred and the presence of God in nature. “My goal is to run a year long, one weekend a month program in Vermont starting this April and see where it goes from there.”

Jeff Fine recently joined ShopLocal.com’s analytics group in Chicago after spending the past two and a half years at Orbitz.com. Earlier in September, Jeff flew to Hanover for Class Officers weekend. Michelle Sweester, Kevin Findlan, and Rex Morey were also in attendance. While he and Michelle were eating in Ramunto’s they bumped into Emily and Cesar Ruiz who were returning from a family vacation in Vermont.

Peter Land, who lives in Burlington, VT, says that there aren’t too many ’99s in the area. Pete mentions that Pat & Sally (Dickinson) DeLeon moved up to

Vermont last year after their wedding. Jeff also reports that he and his dog

Wrigley have had quite a busy summer and fall welcoming other ’99s to the Windy City. “Annette Gaynes came in for a wedding. She is living in Tucson, playing with her dogs Cocoa and Andy and still working at Raytheon. Michelle Sweetser and her husband Ben ’97 came down from Milwaukee to see a Cubs game (which they actually won!). Adam Silberfein flew out from Seattle for Kathleen Eibl’s ’98 wedding at the end of September. Evan Walsh came in on business and we met up with Beth Westman Gaus for dinner. Evan is working at M|C Communications in Boston and Beth is an attorney here in Chicago.”

One person not in Chicago any more is Caroline Kaufman. She moved to Fontainebleau, France and is busy earning her MBA at Insead. Caroline notes, “Cassie Miller came down to visit from London a few weeks ago. If anyone’s in Paris, drop me a line!”

Swee Ching Lim transfered to Morgan Stanley’s London office at the beginning of this year after spending five and a half years with their office in New York. He is still a bond analyst, but enjoys the pace in the UK much more. Swee lives in the hip neighborhood of Islington and notes that “London is a great town, and it certainly is nice to have Europe right across the channel...though I must admit the weather does take a little getting used to. Would love to catch up with folks who are ever on this side of the pond.”

Ridwan Budijono recently paid Swee a visit all the way from Hong Kong. After he graduated from Columbia Business School last year, Ridwan moved to HK to take a job with Lehman Brothers. He gladly reports that Arlene Lim, her husband Santos and their 2-year-old daughter Isabel are doing well in Singapore. Arlene helps teach at her husband’s Tae-Kwon Do school after her day job. Leonora Lok relocated to Singapore in April for a position with Citigroup. Leonora says that she “enjoys the beautiful weather and is still trying to find time to explore the city.”
