Let me tell you briefl y about the death of two signifi cant men. C.S. Lewis was

one of the most important Christian writers of the 20th century and author of

the very popular “Chronicles of Narnia.” Aldous Huxley, author of “Brave New

World,” was considered by many to be a leader of modern thought. These

prominent men both died on the same day, yet it was some time before the

rest of the world heard of their deaths. Why? The date was November 22,

1963 and the eyes of the world were focused on the tragic events unfolding

in Dallas, Texas. Those events overshadowed the passing of two men of

enormous infl uence.

That is not unlike what we experience this month as we celebrate the 45th

anniversary of Morningside Ministries, on September 11, 2006.

Since 2001, September 11th has been appropriately regarded as a

heartbreaking day of tragedy. We refer to it in an almost religious tone.

The date is now known as Patriot Day and we will continue to live in the

aftermath of that tragedy. In a speech last month Attorney General Alberto

R. Gonzales said, “Every day is September 12th for us.”

While we will always hold that day in solemn remembrance, that day also has

special signifi cance for us at Morningside Ministries. So as American citizens

and compassionate humans, we will likely share in times of formal refl ection

on this fi fth anniversary of September 11, 2001. And as those who “care for

those who cared for us” let us also celebrate the loving and lasting infl uence

of 45 years of Morningside Ministries.

Forty-fi ve years ago this September, Morningside began its ministry to

older adults. The journey began with a handful of Methodist clergy and

a need for homes and services to seniors and today has grown into a

tremendous organization, serving more than 850 residents on three

campuses. In the past 45 years, Morningside Ministries has grown into

the oldest and largest faith-based senior living community in San

Antonio, the fourth largest in the state of Texas and in the top 10

percent among other not-for-profi ts nationwide. Morningside

Ministries has grown exponentially throughout the past 45 years, but

the organization has remained focused on its mission of “caring for

those who cared for us.” Today, Morningside Ministries is expanding on

that mission with new and visionary ideas. The focus on technology,

training and statewide partnerships with other providers will lead us

to new ways of operating and compel us to think creatively about new

possibilities. With 77 million baby boomers reaching retirement age

within the next 25 years, the need for organizations like Morningside

Ministries will become more and more profound. Still, the quality of

care and reputation at Morningside Ministries is second-to-none and

we look forward to another 45 years of service.

with approximate sizes of 1,475, 1,615 and 1,800 square feet. Charter residents will also have the option to upgrade and expand their home if they wish. To further customize the homes, three different trim and stone packages and six different front elevations for each home are available.

The cottages will feature an extensive service and amenities package and will provide a generous health care discount for all cottage residents. The pricing structure will be based on an entry-fee model along with a monthly fee. The fi rst limited number of residents who place their deposit will receive considerable charter resident benefi ts, including a discounted entry fee and a higher refund.

The proposed time line for the construction start of the skilled nursing and assisted living communities is summer of 2007. Plan development for these building is still in the early stages.

For more information on the cottages, including the pricing and services, or the expansion plans, please contact a residency counselor at Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs at 830-816-4400. Also, look for more information in upcoming Lifetime Livings!

ExpandingTheMinistryMorningside Ministries at Menger Springs to Begin Phase Two of Development

Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs is growing! Development of the second phase of the campus is already underway with construction expected to begin in early 2007.

Phase two will begin with the construction of 25 cottage homes and will complete the full continuum of care on campus by adding a skilled nursing facility. Phase two will also include an expanded assisted living community, with the Cibolo House converting to 26 memory care apartments, a community center and chapel and an additional 15 cottages.

In August, Morningside Ministries signed a contract to purchase an additional 7.8 acres of land adjacent to the current campus. With this purchase, the campus grows to 31.2 acres of beautiful Hill County land. The additional land provides space to expand and is the proposed location for the skilled nursing and assisted living communities.

The Cottages Under The Oaks at Menger Springs were meticulously planned and designed to accommodate single-family homes that blend into the natural environment and provide a Hill Country elegance to each home. The cottages will feature three different fl oor plans (Flagstone fl oor plan and elevation are pictured on the next page)

Morningside Ministries’ board member). For as much as the clinic provides much-needed and convenient medical care for employees it is also helping the organization to think of new ways of doing things. Through use of the technology that is utilized in the telemedicine clinic, the idea for the new Morningside Ministries Training Institute was born. The same tech-nology that enables patients to talk with their physician in another city will also allow Morningside Ministries to share its unique training programs with other facili-ties and organizations throughout San Antonio and all of South Texas.

Telemedicine is going to change the face of medi-cine in the years to come and Morningside Ministries is proud to be on the cutting edge of future services to older adults. The potential for telemedicine is vast, not only for residents who live at Morningside Ministries but for those who are home-bound or who live in a rural environment or are uninsured and, ultimately, for the entire medical community.

Morningside Ministries Extends Partnership with AT&T and UTMB

The AT&T Foundation has awarded Morningside Ministries an additional grant of $150,000 to continue and expand the Telemedicine program. AT&T has awarded Morningside Ministries a total of $300,000 to provide an employee health clinic through a partnership with The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston.

The employee health clinic has been incredibly successful during the last two and a half years. Telemedicine provided more than 500 visits during the first year and caught serious and chronic health problems that may have otherwise gone undiagnosed.

The Telemedicine program has also resulted in decreased absenteeism among employees who no longer have to take a day off or even leave their shift for a medi-cal appointment. In the past, employees faced the obstacles of no health insurance and no available time away from work to see a doctor. These employees are now able to have a medical consultation while their problem is in its early stages before it becomes chronic or untreatable. This is an incredible advantage for employees and has resulted in a tremen-dous cost savings for the organization.

Telemedicine Wins Program of the Year from TAHSAMorningside Ministries’ collaboration with UTMB and AT&T was awarded the 2006 Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (TAHSA) Program of the Year for the Telemedicine Clinic. In August, Morningside Ministries presented an award plaque to Sue Sonke with the AT&T Foundation and Dr. Glenn Hammack, head of the Electronic Health Network at UTMB (pictured left with Alvin Loewenberg, presi-dent of Morningside Ministries and Charles Foster, a

Celebration of Life Fall Festival

Morningside Manor will hold it’s eighth annual Celebration

of Life Fall Festival on Saturday, November 4, 2006 from

10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please join us for a wonderful,

fun-filled day outdoors, gathering with friends and family

and celebrating life. In addition to the enjoyment, all

proceeds raised go directly to provide resident activities

and to support the care of the animals who make their home at Morningside Manor. The Festival continues to

be a success due to all the support received from residents, family members, employees, volunteers, visitors and

community agencies.

Donations toward the festival would be greatly appreciated – baked goods, prizes for Bingo and raffle items. If

you are interested in volunteering your time, or making a donation contact (210) 731-1040.

There will be lots of food, music and fun at the festival, so make plans to join us! On behalf of the residents and

employees, thank you for all your support.

Third Career Ladder Class To Graduate In December

Since its founding in 1961, the mission of Morningside Ministries has been to “care for those who cared for us.” Over the past 45 years, many older adults, disabled persons and their families have looked to Morningside Ministries for care, comfort, security and spiritual support. With God’s blessings and the generous support of people like you, our ministry has grown in many ways. On September 11, 1961, we began providing nursing care to 10 residents in a single, small building. Today, we provide a wide range of high-quality, elder care services to over 850 residents on three campuses!

Experts agree that the number of older adults in need of care in the U.S. will double within the next few decades. In response to an increasing demand for services, Morningside Ministries opened a new campus in Boerne in 2004. Like our other campuses, this new facility provides independent living, assisted living and memory care. Plans are underway to add a skilled nursing facility to complete the continuum of care. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those of you who made this expansion possible with your contributions.

Please remember that many of our residents outlive their ability to pay for the services they need. This results in difficult financial and emotional situations for our residents and their families. However, your gifts make it possible for them to continue to remain with us and live their lives in dignity with people who truly care for them. In 2006, Morningside Ministries will provide over $3 million in charity care to our residents!

More than ever, we ask for your help in making available the best possible care for the rapidly growing number of seniors in our community. Your gifts help us to maintain and improve our facilities, provide personalized care and ensure the best possible training for our staff. Be assured that every contribution to Morningside Ministries truly makes a difference in the lives of many people!

We also ask for your prayers as we continue to improve and expand our ministry to meet the growing needs of seniors in our community. Again, thank you for your compassion, kindness and generosity to those in need.

Sincerely,

President

Please help us to continue our ministry by sending us a donation in the enclosed envelope today!

fried, breaded or made with rich sauces, dressings and oil. Order salad dressings on the side or ask for a low-fat version. Dip the fork into the dressing rather than pouring the entire amount on top of a salad.

Alcohol is loaded with calories and can enhance your appetite.

If you opt to have a dessert consider low-fat offerings such as fresh fruits or sorbets.

Become familiar with reasonable portion sizes (the amount of meat recommended as part of a healthful meal is three to four ounces – the same size as a deck of cards). Order items a la carte. Pass on all-you-can-eat-buffets. Never super size.

Contrary to what we may have been told it is not necessary to clean your plate in one sitting. Save money by enjoying leftovers for another meal.

Dining in Good Health

Health Check

by Siobhan WalshDirector of Food Services

Morningside Ministries at The Chandler Estate

There are many options when it comes to eating out, be it a casual stop at a local drive-through or a special occasion for fi ne dining. Eating out

offers opportunities for new experiences and cuisines, socializing and celebrating as well as a convenience factor that eliminates having to do the dishes. Eating out is a way of life in the United States and the trend continues to grow. In fact, almost half of our food budget is spent eating out.

There is no need to sacrifi ce your health while you enjoy eating out on the town. Healthy dining involves pre-planning: where, what and how much you will eat. Where you eat signifi cantly determines what you will eat and what you eat infl uences the amount you will eat.

When dining out keep the following eight tips in mind:

Consider where you are going and think about what healthy items are offered.

Some restaurants will indicate healthy options on their menus.

Appetizers tend to be high in fat, often prepared quickly by deep-fat frying.

Ask how foods are prepared. Avoid foods that are
