The EAP stigma and low utilization

There can be disappointment with the level of utilization with EAP

vendors. Why is utilization low? Unfortunately, it’s because the EAP

carries the stigma that it’s only for those with problems —

embarrassing problems — like mental health and substance abuse

issues.

One of the benefits of the LifeWorks Premium EAP is that it is an

engine for reducing this stigma and normalizing its use. The entry

to the LifeWorks Premium EAP, the integrated app, is fun and

engaging. People use it daily to get the latest discounts and to see

who is being recognized, including themselves. The entirety of the

experience minimizes and even erases the old EAP stigma.

Addressing the well-being crisis

The costs of unwell workers and how they affect business has been

well-researched. For example, according to a 2016 Global Wellness

Institute report, The Future of Wellness at Work:

• The world’s 3.2 billion workers are increasingly unwell. The

economic burden of unwell workers is at epidemic levels —

possibly reaching 10-15% of global economic output.

• In the U.S., the costs of stress, work-related injuries and

illnesses, and employee disengagement sum to more than $2.2

trillion annually, which is 12% of the gross domestic product.

• Unwell employees become unmotivated, unproductive, and

disengaged.

Return on investment LifeWorks delivers excellent ROI

• Marriott’s investment in LifeWorks EAP services supports the company’s core value to put

people first and pays big dividends. Marriott experienced a payback of $2.60 for every $1

invested – a 260% return.

• LifeWorks provides Baptist Health with a value dashboard that communicates key employee

assistance program utilization, return on investment (ROI) and outcome data. Baptist

Health’s value dashboard showed: an ROI of 2.4 to 1 (for every dollar Baptist Health spends

on LifeWorks, it realizes a return of $2.40); employee turnover savings of nearly $290,000;

employee absenteeism savings of more than $272,000.

Value Stats

• A 2% pay raise costs most companies $700 per

employee per year.

• Absenteeism and churn costs most companies

$610 per employee per year.

• LifeWorks provides our clients the means to

reduce both by at least 10%, making it self

funding.

• A typical 1,000 employee company that provides

continuous communication, engagement and

visible benefits are likely to save an average of

$705,000 per year on those who are less efficient

with engagement. That’s $705 per employee per

year.

Smartphones foster a positive work environment

There are now more than 2.1 billion

smartphone users in the world, and people

are spending 5.6 hours per day on the

Internet, half of which is spent on mobile

phones. This equals to the average

smartphone user checking their phone 150

times per day.

While it may seem counterintuitive to have

employees use smartphones in the

workplace, according to a Bersin by

Deloitte study, having employees use

smartphones in a planned manner can

have many business advantages.

Smartphones in the Workforce found that

HR professionals recognize the following

benefits:

• 60% increase in workforce productivity

• 52% increase in employee engagement

• 33% increase in workforce satisfaction

Our solution has seen employee average

usage of three to four times per day, with

each session lasting two to three minutes,

and we have measured 70–99% adoption

of the platform within three days of

availability. It puts the LifeWorks program

front and center in employees’ lives.

Private Social Network & Internal Communication

The Private Social Network is an internal

communication channel that is exclusively for

the use of your management and employees. It

has the capability of posting and distributing

messages that the company sends, as well as that

employees send to each other in departments and

groups. It fuels a sense of community and a

corporate culture of engagement.

The timeline social newsfeed provides a

continuous stream of posts about the latest and

best discounts, recognition of employees who

have received praise for exceeding expectations,

celebrations of birthdays and years of service, the

HR department’s benefits messages, and more.

The Private Social Network helps to get messages

out in a fresh and engaging way where and when

employees are congregating on their

smartphones.

What motivates today’s workforce is frequent recognition, not only from leaders, but from peers.

Frequent recognition reinforces company values and behaviors, such as productivity, discretionary effort, and high performance. It also establishes a corporate culture of appreciation, which fosters engagement.

Social Reward & Recognition

Social recognition is a virtual pat on the back in

front of the entire organization. Employees are

empowered through peer-to-peer, social

recognition based on company core values

and business principles, and there’s a leader

board to celebrate top performers.

On our platform, the average number of

recognitions per employee per month is 62. And

recognition drives a great deal of the persistency

of use: there are 2.8 average logins per employee

per day.

Companies also may allocate spot rewards to

employees, which can be redeemed at any of our

gift card retailers.
