Greatness of Ramadan RAMADAN is the month in which was sent
down The Quran, as a guidance to the mankind
with clear signs of the true guidance and as theCriterion. So those of you who live to see that
month should fast it, and whoever is sick or on a
journey should fast the same number of other
days instead. Allah wants ease and not hardship
for you so that you may complete the number of
days required, magnify Allah for what He has
guided you to, and give thanks to Him.
[Al-Quran 2;185]
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar,
which is based on the lunar changes. It is for this rea-
son that the month of Ramadan falls in dif-
ferent seasons. If it would not have been so
people living in certain regions of the
world could experience the fasting only in
summer or only in winter.
The meaning of the Arabic root for Rama-
dan means to be intensely hot. It refers to
the hot and dry sensation of thirst during
this month due to fasting. As heat is used toinfluence and shape matter, Ramadan
shapes the Believer and scorches evil.
The Prophet Muhammad used to pray from the 7th
month onwards: O! Allah convey us to the month of
Ramadan. Describing the greatness of Ramadan, the
Prophet used to address his companions before
Ramadan. The Prophet said that, performing one
obligation in this month, would earn reward equaling
the reward of performing 70 obligations in other
days.
Allah praised the month of Ramadan out of the other
months by choosing it to send down the Glorious
Quran, just as He did for all the other Divine Books
He revealed to the Prophets. This revelation of the
Quran made this month, a great and blessed month.
The night of Ramadan in which it was revealed, is a
night better than 1000 months [Quran 97:1-5] .
When the month and the night in which the Holy
Quran has become such blessed then what would be
the status of the Believers and the Followers of thisBook. Unfortunately, when we, those who proclaim to
believe in this Book, kept it aside we are degrading.
The Prophet said: Allah will raise many nations by
this Book and will lower many.(Muslim). Hence, it is
the need of the hour that we strengthen our relation
with the holy Quran.
Think! How to strengthen the relation with Quran in
this Ramadan?
Certain basic states and attitudes of heart and mind are
a necessary prerequisite to any fruitful relationship
with the Qur'an. Develop them as much as
you can.
First: Come to the Quran with a strong and
deep faith that it is the word of Allah, your
Creator and Lord.
Second: Read the Quran with no purpose
other than to receive guidance from your
Lord, to come nearer to Him, and to seek
His good pleasure.
Third: Make yourself constantly alert with
intense praise and gratitude to your Lord for
having blessed you with His greatest gift the Quran
and for having guided you to its reading and study.
Fourth: Accept and trust, without the least doubt or
hesitation, every knowledge and guidance that the
Quran conveys to you.
Fifth: Bring the will, to obey whatever the Quran says,
and change your life, attitudes and behavior-inwardlyand outwardly-as desired by it.
Sixth: Always remain aware that, as you embark upon
reading the Quran, Satan will create every possible
hazard and obstacle to stalk you on your way to the
great riches of the Qur'an.
Seventh: Trust, exclusively and totally, in Allah to
lead you to the full rewards of reading the Qur'an.

The Objectives of FastingO you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to
you as it was prescribed to those before you, so
tha t you may be god - fearing. [Al-Baqarah 2:183]
Like most other injunctions of Islam those relating
to fasting were revealed gradually. In the begin-
ning the Prophet had instructed the Muslims
to fast three days in every month, though this was
not obligatory. Fasting was made obligatory in the
present verse, which was later revealed in 2 A.H.
The main objective of fasting, is to achieveTaqwa. It is required for being guided by the
Quran(2;2). Taqwa is translated
as piety; consciousness of Allah;
fear of Allah. It is derived from the
Arabic word Wiqayah for
Shield and the connection could
be explained as : to shield our-
selves from Allahs wrath by hur-
rying to do what He ordered us
and by strictly avoiding what he has prohibited.
The characteristics of the pious people are de-
scribed in the Holy Quran at many places. True
righteousness consists in believing in Allah and
the Last Day, the Angels, the Book and the Proph-
ets, and in giving away ones property in love of
Him(Allah) to ones kinsmen, the orphans, the
poor and the wayfarer, and to those who ask for
help, in freeing slaves, and in establishing prayers
and dispensing the zakah. True righteousness is
attained by those who are faithful to their promise
once they have made it and those who remain
steadfast in adversity and affliction and at the time
of battle (between Truth and falsehood). Such are
the truthful ones; such are the God-
Fearing.[2;177]
Wh at d o t h e Go d - Fea r i n g g a i n ?
And for those who fear Allah, He (ever) pre-
pares a way out (65;2) , And He provides forhim sustenance from (sources) he never could
imagine(65:3).and Allah will create ease for
him,(65:5) and the greatest achievement, they
are in guidance from their Lord, and they are the
truly successful(2;5).
If being thirsty and hungry the whole day, and
not being away from evil, then the fasting has
gone vain. The Prophet said: Whoever do not
abstain from deceitful speech and actions, Allahis not in need of him leaving his food and
drink.(Bukhari).
It should he noted that fasting in
Ramadan has not only been de-
clared an act of worship and de-
votion and a means to nourish
piety but has also been character-
ized as an act of gratefulness to
God for His great bounty of trueguidance in the form of the Quran. In fact, the
best way of expressing gratitude for someone's
bounty or benevolence is to prepare oneself, to
the best of one's ability, to achieve the purpose
for which that bounty has been bestowed. The
Quran has been revealed so that we may know
the way that leads to God's good pleasure, follow
that way ourselves and direct the world along it.
Fasting is an excellent means by which to prepareourselves for shouldering this task. Hence fasting
during the month of the revelation of the Quran is
more than an act of worship and more than an
excellent course of moral training; it is also an
appropriate form for the expression of our thank-
fulness to God for the bounty of the Quran.

Sayings of the Prophet on fastingAbu Huraira related that the Prophet said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward
from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seek-
ing his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with
faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. (reported by Bukhari, Muslim).
Abu Huraira related that Prophet said: If anyone omits his fast even for one day in Ramadan without a con-
cession or without being ill, then if he were to fast for the rest of his life he could not make up for it.
(reported by Bukhari).
Abu Huraira related that the Prophet said: Allah the Majestic and Exalted said: Every deed of man will
receive ten to 700 times reward, except Siyam (fasting), for it is for Me and I shall reward it (as I like). There
are two occasions of joy for one who fasts: one when he breaks the fast and the other when he will meet his
Lord. (reported by Muslim).
When to start fasting
Ibn Umar related that the Prophet said: Do not start fasting unless you see the new moon, and do not end
fasting until you see it. If the weather is cloudy then calculate when it should appear.(reported by Bukhari,
Muslim).
The Suhoor meal (which is eaten before dawn)
Anas related that Prophet said: Take the Suhoor meal, for there is blessing in it. (reported by Bukhari,
Muslim).
Breaking your fast
Salman ibn Amir Dhabi related that the Prophet said: Break your fast with dates, or else with water, for it is
pure. (reported by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).
The Prophet said: The people will continue to be in welfare as long as they hurry to iftar (break fast after
the sunsets). (reported by Bukhari, Muslim)
Behavior while fasting
Abu Huraira related that the Prophet said: If a person does not avoid false talk and false conduct during Si-
yam, then Allah does not care if he abstains from food and drink. (reported by Bukhari, Muslim).
Forgetfully eating or drinking while fasting
Abu Huraira related that the Prophet said: If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks he should
complete his Siyam, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink. (reported by Bukhari, Muslim).
Lailat al-Qadr
Aisha related that the Prophet said: Look for Lailat al-Qadr on an odd-numbered night during the last ten
nights of Ramadan. (reported by Bukhari).
Anas ibn Malik related that the Prophet said: When Lailat al-Qadr comes Gabriel descends with a company
of angels who ask for blessings on everyone who is remembering Allah, whether they are sitting or standing
(reported by Baihaqi)

Fasting-Excerpts Towards Understanding IslamWhat prayers seek to do five
times a day fasting in the
month of Ramadan doesonce a year. During this pe-
riod we eat not a grain of
food nor drink a drop of water
from dawn to dusk, no matter
how delicious the dish or how hungry or
thirsty we feel. What is it that makes us
voluntarily undergo such severity? It is
nothing but faith in God and the fear of
Him and the Day of Judgment.
Each and every moment during our fast
we suppress our passions and desires and
proclaim, by so doing, the supremacy of
the Law of God. This consciousness of
duty and spirit of patience that continual
fasting for a whole month inculcates in us
and helps us strengthen our faith.
Severity and discipline during this month
bring us face to face with the realities of
life and help us make our life, during the
rest of the year, a life of true subservience
to His Will.
From yet another point of view fasting has
an immense impact on society, for all the
Muslims irrespective of their
status must fast during the
same month. This emphasizesthe essential equality of men
and thus goes a long way to-
wards creating in them senti-
ments of love and brother-
hood. During Ramadan evil conceals itself
while good comes to the fore and the
whole atmosphere is filled with piety and
purity.
This discipline has been imposed on us forour own advantage. Those who do not ful-
fill this primary duty cannot be relied on to
discharge their other duties. But the worst
are
those who during this holy month do not
hesitate to eat or drink in public. They
show by their conduct that they care noth-
ing for the commands of Allah in Whom
they profess their belief as Creator and
Sustainer. Not only this, they also show
that they are not loyal members of the
Muslim community rather, they have
nothing to do with it. Only the worst can
be expected of such hypocrites.
Guard your prayers. Try to start for the Masjid as
soon as the call comes.
Increase your remembrance of Allah, and recita-
tion of Quran, and listening to it, and consider its
meanings.
Be well-mannered. Do not use foul or harsh lan-
guage.
Take advantage of Fasting to give up bad habits.
Try to make a firm conviction to leave it in night
as you left it in the day.
Do not overeat at the time of breaking the fast, as
the benefit of fasting is cancelled and is not
healthy.
Do not waste your time watching television or
surfing internet.
Increase spending in charity.
Make peace with those with whom you have had
disputes.

Iwas in my school days, when I happened to ask my
classmates some questions like, why do you bunk the
classes and roam about the city? or why do you listen to
that offensive music? It was very shocking to get an an-swer: Time pass yaro. Is this precious gift, time meant to
just pass. The Prophet Muhammad said : There aretwo gifts about which people are mostly dishonest: one is
health and the other is leisure.[Bukhari&Muslim]
Everyone knows that time is the most precious thing he
has and once it is lost, it never returns. But why do most
people show carelessness and foolishness in spending their
time? The answer to it is that those people do not know the
purpose of their life. Allah says in the Holy Quran:
Verily, Allah causes the revolution of the day and thenight. Verily, herein indeed is a lesson for those who see.
[Nur;44] When intelligent people think about the passing
of days and their existence, they will use the time, to per-
form the duties for which they were born.
The Prophet said: On the Day of Judgment noperson will be able to walk a step further before answering
four questions. Of which the first two are: In what acts
did he spend his life? In what did he spend his youth?
The realization of the sense of answering to the Lord, will
surely make us careful in spending the unknown but lim-ited period of time granted to us.

Time in Islam is more than Gold or any precious mate-
rial thing in this world. Of all religions, only Islam
guides mankind not only to the importance of time but
also how to value it.Both the Qur'an and the Sunnahenjoin Muslims to be conscious of time. We are re-
minded that life in this world is nothing but temporary.
We never know when death has been appointed for us.
The Prophet Mohammad said: There are two gifts
about which people are mostly dishonest: one is health
and the other is leisure.
We must remember that time must be spent to fulfill our
very purpose in life that is to worship Allah throughout
our lives. We should make use of our time in doing
beneficial things especially those that will make uscloser to Allah and earn His Mercy. We have to make
use of our time wisely by knowing more of the Qur'an
and the Sunnah. We must have correct knowledge of
what Allah and His Messenger Prophet Mohammad
have commanded us to do and at the same time to re-
frain from what they have forbidden us..
