Lighting technology is undergoing a significant
development – including new light sources, intel-
ligent and interactive control of light and the use of
interactive screens. To meet the new demands, the
cross-disciplunary MSc in Lighting Design makes a
unique combination of the fields of media technology,
architecture and the science of light. Furthermore, it
is founded in a special Danish and Nordic tradition of
sensibility to light in our built environment. We focus
on how the technical qualities of light and materials
are applied in order to promote comfort and aesthe-
tics.

Students work with both daylight and artificial light
in the crossing between three scientific fields; media
technology, engineering and architecture. The pur-
pose of the programme is for graduates to have an
academic-technological as well as process-related
approach to lighting design, and not least, a par-
ticular sense of designing with light in virtual and
physical spaces. During the programme, you will be
working with the interplay between the basic physical
elements of light, lighting technologies, digital media,
context, human factors and design methods.

In December 2017, Lighting Design received the
Professional Lighting Design Recognition - Award
for Education thanks to outstanding teachers,
students and partners.

”My way into the field
of Lighting Design
started while work-
ing in an Architec-
tural firm. While
doing research about
lighting, I stumbled
upon the Master
of Science in Lighting
Design at Aalborg University,
Copenhagen.
The studies here are focused on projects and group
work. This setup is optimal because the groups are
from different nationalities and professions, so-
mething that creates the foothold for a diverse pro-
ject, and we also learn from each other in the process.
As lighting designers, we work in a multidisciplinary
fashion, combining design and architecture, humani-
stic knowledge and media technology and then inte-
grating it into a creative design. This way of working
gives us a foundation of how to work with the sensual,
the virtual and the physical aspect of creating good
lighting environments.
We learn the fundamentals of how light works in vir-
tual spaces and in our physical world; how to create
a design that both fulfils specific needs, but is also
esthetically pleasing to the individual.
The future of the lighting industry looks very bright.”Mohamed Ali Jama

With an MSc in Lighting Design, you have very good
job opportunities. For years, the industry has called-
for a Nordic Master’s programme in Lighting Design
at a high international level.
An MSc in Lighting Design qualifies you for jobs in a
variety of fields. You can for instance work with con-
sultancy companies within the fields of engineering,
architecture and landscape architecture, etc. You can
also work in media production companies where
lighting designers are needed to make animation
films, computer games and other kinds of entertain-
ment. Or you can work in lighting companies and
with producers of lighting armatures. Furthermore,
lighting designers are needed in the public sector
where you can find work at municipalities and in the
State Administration as well as in various other fields
where light and media is involved.
Lighting Design at Aalborg University gives you a fu-
ture-proof education with an attractive international
profile. About half of graduating classes are offered
jobs before they graduate.

The study method at Aalborg University is called
“The Aalborg Model for Problem Based Learning
(PBL)”. Each semester, you work with a group of fel-
low students on a large assignment. This adds both
an academic and social dimension to your study
programme and it equips you for the labour mar-
ket where skills in cooperation are in high demand.

”I have seen and par-
ticipated in many dif-
ferent sort of lec-
tures, workshops
and learning env-
ironments overall,
before starting my
problem based and
group work-oriented
master studies in Lighting
Design at Aalborg University Copenhagen.
I had no idea how much improvement in study moti-
vation, interest and performance this sort of educa-
tion can give you.
I have a background in engineering, but interests in all
kinds of developing and creation in action. With that
in mind, I was seeking for a solution where I could
release my inner creativity and utilise my expertise
in engineering. I came up with Lighting Design, and
I truly have been happy with this choice. It’s not only
the nature of the teaching, but also the benefit of
having up-to-date knowledge, tools, equipment and
facilities to test, demo and implement my ideas. When
it comes to assignments, they are related to real-life
situations instead of being products of imagination. I
believe that this approach has provided a good basis
for my career.
I wouldn’t say that my studies have been easy; they
were challenging, motivating and rewarding! ” Heikki Väisänen, MSc in Lighting Design
Today, Heikki works as a designer with Skandal Tech-
nologies in Helsinki.
