The race to find clean, renewable andsustainable energy is at a fever pitch.Billions of dollars are spent on advanc-ing wind, water, solar, fossil, coal, nu-clear energy sources—you name it, andthere is an online chatter defending oropposing it. In and of itself, the courseof arguments between passionate de-fenders is commendable: we are makingprogress on many fronts towards a betterfuture.

Those of us in the lighting industry,in turn, immerse ourselves in researchand developing products to use less en-

ergy; and escalate our own argumentsabout which technology; SSL, induc-tance, fluorescent, etc., will outlast allothers. No doubt, lighting technology isadvancing at an ever-increasing pace, due, in no small measure, to the compet-itive nature of this business. Is there aclear winner in this race?

In our view, no matter the source ofenergy, or the lighting technology, the

consumer is primarily interested in sav-ing as much energy, and therefore cost, aspossible. After all, a watt is a watt, andutility companies charge by the watt. Ohand by the way, the consumer also wantsthe product to look good. In a nutshell, the consumer wants options.

At KOJIN, we are committed to thefundamental principle of “keeping it sim-ple”. In early 2005, we looked at the sim-ple fluorescent tube—the most widelyused lighting technology outside of resi-dential applications. The tube radiateslight 360° around the tube. The obviousfirst response was a mostly non-technicalone— apply a reflector around the tubeto re-direct the “wasted” light down tothe task level. Using Nano technology,we manufactured tube reflectors, with

FX Luminaire is best known for devel-oping some of the most elegant, effi-cient, and technologically advancedLED fixtures in the industry. The mostrecent FX product release, the PO walllight, is a shining example of that rep-utation in action.

The PO is one of the most versatilewall fixtures on the market because ofthe way it blends LED efficiency, durable materials, and specificationflexibility. It was built to accommodatethe lighting designer’s need for exteriorstyling as well as light function. The POhas four faceplate options. Two are floodlights, one is a wall wash, and the otheris a spot light style. They are all muchsmaller in diameter than their incandes-cent predecessors, which allow the land-scaper to use a core drill to install. Usinga core drill is much less obtrusive to thestructure the fixture is being installed in,which removes the worry about puttinga large hole in a stairway or wall.

The core benefit for landscaperswith this flexibility is that they will beable to adjust not only the type of lightoutput, but also the look. If a more tra-ditional or modern look is desired, the

PO can make it happen. All fixtures in-clude 12" of PVC, a 1 LED module, three color filters and 10’ of cable. Allfixtures are also available in a choice ofpowdercoat, bare brass, antique ornickel plated finishes.

The PO is available now, and willbe on display in the FX Luminairebooth, 6141, at Lightfair International.

The pioneers in developing self-luminoustechnology are at it again. Isolite, theworld’s leading manufacturer of self lu-minous exit signs and a leading manufac-turer of energy efficient emergencylighting products, is revolutionizingemergency lighting with a new, innova-tive, aesthetically appealing and more ef-fective low level emergency lightingsystem—LightPathTM.

Lightpath is the definitive solutionfor emergency egress lighting. Mountedjust 18" above the floor, Lightpath pro-vides a concealed LED emergency lightthat projects uniform illumination alongthe path of egresss. With spacings of upto 50' on centers, Lightpath continues toprovide egress illumination even inheavy smoke conditions where tradi-tional ceiling or wall mounted lightingcan be compromised due to glare orlight blockage.

“As a leading manufacturer of en-ergy efficient emergency lighting prod-ucts, we’re always looking for ways toimprove current technology,” states BillLynch, President of Isolite. “After lis-tening to fire safety experts concernsabout the effectiveness of existingemergency lighting products in smokefilled spaces, we designed what wethink is the perfect solution. Light-path—a low level recessed emergency

light that puts light right where it’sneeded ... on the path of egress. Notonly is it a more effective means of il-luminating the way out, it also has theadded benefit of enhanced aesthetics byblending into any decor. Architects andlighting designers no longer have to in-stall a fixture that compromises theirdesign. Improved life safety coupledwith a nearly invisible footprint is acombination that is sure to be a winner.”

Raymond W. Swartz, PE / LEED APfrom KONSORTUM1, comments,“When incorporating emergency egresslighting solutions into our projects, mydesign criteria always focuses on the in-tricate balance of excellent photometricperformance, cost-effectiveness, andmost importantly aesthetics. Isolite’s newLightPath product offers a unique low-level based solution that very effectivelysatisfies all three of these critical designconcerns.”

At LIGHTFAIR® 2012, the FraunhoferHeinrich Hertz Institute presents a novelform of broadband transmission technol-ogy—Visible Light Communication(VLC).

In VLC, broadband data streamstravel via visible light emitted by stan-dard off-the-shelf LED lamps to a com-puter or other communication-enabledend device. The current broadband capac-ity of VLC is 100 Mbit/s, while speeds ofup to 800 Mbit/s have been demonstratedin laboratory conditions. This transmis-sion technology, which draws on the en-ergy-efficient electronics of LEDs, isequally suitable for the dissemination ofbroadband video streams and bidirec-tional communication such as videoconferencing if infrared LEDs are usedfor the back channel. This technologycan be applied anywhere LED technol-ogy is used for illumination, making itequally at home in hospitals and manu-facturing processes.

The use of visible light brings an ad-ditional advantage: the light cone fromthe lamp clearly marks the radius of datadistribution and accessibility. The funda-mentals of VLC were developed by

Fraunhofer HHI in association with in-dustry partners Siemens and France Tele-com Orange Labs through the EU'sOMEGA project.

Visible Light Communication can beseen as a complement for radio in wire-less access, and is attractive for short-range, high speed links in areas whereradio is not desired or feasible. Possibleuses include optical WLANs or point-and-shoot links in various environments.

VLC benefits from various favorablefactors, including:• Omnipresence of LEDs in displays, signaling and illumination• Significant potential for high-speedmodulation by using LEDs as

Only a few times each generation is hu-manity treated with a disruptive innova-tion—one that can truly change thelandscape and provide the type of multi-industry advancement across unlimitedsectors. We are at the threshold of a rad-ical worldwide change in the lighting ofjust about every type of architecturalsurface. Not since Thomas Edison in-vented the incandescent bulb has alight-providing device so enthralled aglobal audience—even global govern-ments and industry leaders. In the lastdecade the LED chip has quickly trans-

formed the light bulb as we know ittoday to a phenomenon quickly leadingto a vast paradigm shift away from tra-ditional light sources.

When such technology is unveiledit is often met with skepticism, early of-ferings are of poor quality, little to noregulations exist and we view the land-scape as somewhat of a Wild, Wild, Westcadre of companies and individuals try-ing to get in on the action. While thetechnology itself dates back to 1907(Henry Joseph Round), only in recentyears has the technology, cost and ac-

ceptance finally reached the tippingpoint. Early in 2011, Cree, Inc. intro-duced a 10w, 1,000 lumen LED chipthat is quickly transforming the outdoorcommercial, industrial, warehouse and

municipal lighting sector away from tra-ditional HID light fixtures to thosedriven by low-wattage LED lamps.

Leader International Corporation, a31-year venerable manufacturer of out-door site and street furniture and LEDaccent lights, collaborated with its affil-iate Differential Energy Global Ltd.(DEG) to bring several transformationalinnovations in LED lighting through thecreative, design, prototype and testingphases. Releasing at LIGHTFAIR® andthroughout 2012, DEG will offer anarray of LED lamps with equivalentlumen output (displayed in lux or foot-candles) ready to replace all levels ofHID bulbs ranging from 70w to 400winitially and followed by outputs for hi-bay fixtures up to a 700w equivalent.

Vu1 Corporation is set-ting a new global stan-dard for safe,sustainable, energy-effi-cient lighting. Utilizinga technology—ElectronStimulated Lumines-cence™ (ESL) that hasits genesis in the TV-tube technology of pastgenerations—Vu1’s sig-nature R30 bulb accom-plishes what lighting

innovators have triedfor centuries to do—generate a lighting out-put that approaches theideal of lighting reflec-tivity defined by scien-tist Johann Lambert.

The Vu1 R30 suc-ceeds by creating awarm, pleasing lightthat has a full spectrumof colors and reflectsevenly on the surface

below. The R30 generates a 65-wattequivalency and 500 lux with just 19.5watts, is fully dimmable, and containsno mercury or other harmful compo-nents.

So, what is this ESL technologyand how does it work? Well, as men-tioned earlier, it functions similar toyour old tube televisions—it uses ac-celerated electrons to stimulate phos-phor to create light, making the surfaceof the bulb “glow”. This efficient tech-nology allows the ESL bulb to projectthe same light quality as an incandes-cent but is up to 70 percent more en-ergy efficient, lasting up to five timeslonger than incandescent and contribut-ing to the reduction of greenhouse gasemissions. Perhaps most importantly, there is no use of the neurotoxin Mer-

cury (Hg) in the lighting process. In 2004, a group of engineers, scien-

tists and executives sensed the beginningof a cataclysmic shift in the way con-sumers obtained lighting, and exploredvarious options of how to compete in thischanging lighting landscape.

By combining technologies that hadnever been used before in lighting, theycreated the Electron Stimulated Lumines-cence model—a highly energy efficient, near perfect light quality, mercury-freelighting technology.

After more than a half-decade of test-ing and refining, the Vu1 R30 ESL re-ceived UL certification in October 2010.With this certification, Vu1 was able tobegin to put the pieces in place to move

VLC can also be used for applications be-yond communication, such as light de-sign for large halls or indoor GPS dataextension.

Q: What is CSL’s specialty?

A: CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting)has been designing and manufacturingperformance-engineered architecturallighting fixtures since 1990. We are per-haps best known for being pioneers in thelow voltage small aperture recessed light-ing category, but over the past severalyears we have emerged as a leader in theconcealed LED lighting and architecturalLED lighting categories. Our productscan be found in commercial buildings, hotels, retail establishments and eco-friendly homes all over the world. In fact,CSL’s 12V Ultra Compact PDQ StripLighting and Invizilite Generation 2 wererecently featured in ELLE DÉCOR’s2012 Miami Showhouse.

Q: What are some of CSL’s most pop-ular products?

A: All of our products are popular fordifferent reasons, but the architecturaland design communities have really em-braced our LED Eco-Downlight collec-tions. We offer the 2" apertureEco-Downlight LED "Mini", a 3" aper-ture Eco-Downlight LED and we'll be

debuting our 5" aperture Eco-DownlightLED at LIGHTFAIR. Design and build-ing professionals appreciate that theselights are modular, uncomplicated in de-sign and a great value. An example of“modular” is that the Eco-Downlightscome with interchangeable optics and avariety of trim options. In one recentproject pursuing LEED certification, thebuilder chose the 2" aperture and 3"aperture Eco-Downlights because he wasable to set the light direction at varyingdegrees depending on the ceiling height. The project had heavily sloped roofs, soour modularity was a real advantage.

Q: Do you have anything special instore for this year’s LIGHTFAIR?

A: This is a landmark year for CSL atLIGHTFAIR. We have aggressively ex-panded our LED collections to become avital player in the solid-state lightingspace. In many ways, our 2012 LIGHT-FAIR presence marks our re-debut in thiscategory. We have a dynamic offering ofLED lighting solutions that meet a vari-ety of technical needs, from LED Eco-Downlights and Linear LED Lighting toLED Steplights and LED ArchitecturalLighting. All of our new LED collectionsare examples of how CSL continuouslyevolves as a brand. The newly expanded

Eco-Downlight collection is a great ex-ample of our innovation, simplicity, de-sign and function. We are proud to debutthe second generations of our LED“Mini” and 3" aperture Eco-Downlightthis year, which offer more power andhigher energy-efficiency than their pred-ecessors. The new 5" aperture Eco-Downlight also reflects our ability tocreate downlighting solutions for alltypes of buildings, both large and small. The variety and quality of our LED offer-ings just get better and better each year.I’m really excited and encourage every-body to stop by Booth #2123.

Q: How is energy efficient lighting leg-islation affecting your business?

A: It’s affecting CSL in a positive way.The U.S., Europe, China and other majorinternational powers view energy effi-cient lighting innovation as a necessity.CSL is on the cutting-edge of creatingsolid-state lighting products to meet thatincreased demand. In fact, a recent reportfound that the solid-state lighting marketwill amount to almost $91 billion by2020, or close to 60 percent of the overalllighting market.

Q: What types of solid-state lightingadvancements do you envision for the

CSL(continued from page 1)

future?

A: The market is looking for increasedperformance on every level. We are be-ginning to see LEDs with higher junctionpoint temperatures. These LEDs can getup to 150 degrees Celsius, which is ex-tremely hot. For architects and designers,a higher temperature means they will beable to increase the light impact, ulti-mately decreasing the amount of LEDsneeded to light a space. Three years agowhen we began using LEDs, we were get-ting 25-30 lumens per watt. With the ad-vancement of junction temperature, weare now seeing up to 100 lumens per watt.

Advancements in color consistency willcontinue, as will dimmable solutions. AtCSL, we are value engineering all of ourcurrent LED Eco-Downlights, in order toreduce market costs while keeping the samelight output. We've also been working dili-gently to create a better selection of deco-rative, high performance LED fixtures.Needless to say, there’s plenty of work todo and the future looks bright for CSL.

“As efficacy of LED systems im-prove while LED costs drop, manylighting manufacturers are refiningtheir fabrication techniques to buildbetter, more efficient fixtures”, notesKen. “With these improvements we areseeing better designed products asLED formats become more flexiblewith better light output and color con-sistency. This is very exciting as weare now able to specify energy-effi-cient solutions without compromisingour design vision.”

One lighting manufacturer thatcaught Ken’s eye is EcoSense Lighting,a young, fast-growing manufacturer ofenergy-efficient LED luminaires, special-izing in white LED technology.“EcoSense products are very high qualityfixtures with rich and beautifully consis-

tent light output”, says Ken. EcoSense EcoSpec Linear was the

product of choice for one of KVLD’smost recent installations at the ParkHyatt Hotel in Washington DC. Kenand KVLD co-founder, Levia Lewworked closely with Gonzalez Archi-tects of Savanna, Georgia on re-de-signing this space. The project scopeincluded the staircase entrance, lounge, pre-function corridor and ball-rooms. This impressive new lightinginstallation was recently featured onthe front cover of the February issueof Washington Life Magazine, as thebackdrop to a photo shoot highlightingthe hottest young professionals in theDC area.

“On this project we used EcoSpecLinear HP INT to illuminate the variouscove conditions in the long pre-functioncorridor, transforming this once darkand transitional area into a bright, wel-

coming space,” notes Levia. “We alsoadded dynamism to the staircase en-trance by using EcoSpec Linear INTunder cast artisan glass set within thebroad stair banister, adding a livelysparkle and rich glow. We also sup-ported Gonzalez Architects’ sumptuousdesign in the previously under-usedarea below the staircase by setting a rowof EcoSpec Linear INT behind the

perimeter seating couches, creating alayer of depth while highlighting thelounge’s rich textural forms. The resultshave been warmly received by the Clientand their guests alike.”

In addition to its consistent color out-put, made possible through a rigorous bin-ning process, EcoSense products are alsoeasy to install, with simple adapters thatplug directly into line voltage without theneed for external drivers or complicatedwiring. EcoSense product have non-flicker, full-range dimming for a smoothtransition from off to full on.

“They have a seasoned team of in-dustry experts who understand the needsof designers and their products are quiteimpressive.” adds Ken. “I am lookingforward to using EcoSense on futureprojects.”

years. In 1980, we created the CertifiedLighting Management Consultant(CLMC®) certification, the first certifi-cation to identify lighting professionalswho had mastered fundamental and ad-vanced lighting management principles, and the first to be recognized by theUnited States Government.

Then, in response to growing con-cerns over the environment and theamount of energy being used, we cre-ated the Certified Sustainable LightingConsultant (CSLC) certification in2009—a certification focused on sus-tainable lighting systems, and helpingpeople reduce energy consumptionwith those systems. Because theCLMC® is used as a prerequisite forthe CSLC, a person with this certifica-

tion must understand lighting funda-mentals as well as sustainability andhow it relates to lighting systems at allphases of implementation.

When you see CLMC® or CSLCafter a person’s name, it tells you a lotabout them. It says that, among otherthings, they understand how to designlighting systems that deliver appropri-ate light levels and maximize energyand cost savings. It says they have atleast five years experience working asa lighting management professionaland have held leadership positions. Most importantly, it says they adhereto the highest ethical and professionalstandards in the industry.

That’s why you should chooseNALMCO® when you’re planning anenergy-efficient lighting retrofit orplanned lighting maintenance program.Partnering with a CLMC® or CSLC-

certified individual can help improveyour bottom line, increase your credi-bility within the industry and help youget the most from any lighting projector program. You’ll get solutions thatoffer long-term reliability, energy-effi-ciency and cost-savings.

For architects, engineers and spec-ifiers, it’s more important than ever toknow your lighting system is beingmaintained by a qualified lightingmanagement professional. Due to rap-idly changing technology, lighting sys-tems can evolve quickly. Our certifiedprofessionals can help modify lightingsystems effectively, resulting in morebenefits and reduced costs over the lifeof the system.

NALMCO®-certified profession-als ensure the lighting systems you de-sign are properly maintained. Forlighting systems, we all know proper

down to 0.1 percent—like halogen lamps. With many of today’s LED modules hav-ing light outputs exceeding 3000 lumens, dimming down to only 10 percent (300 lu-mens) is not acceptable in many high-endapplications. Even the dimming responsecan be tailored to suit specific externalcontrol devices with either a linear or log-arithmic dimming curve supported.

Add Value To Your Products And Pro-tect Your Investment With LEDcodeSOLOdrive has the facility to accept acombination of local control devices built

into each luminaire via its simple on-board 2-wire interface. Having sensors asa simple extension of a driver simplifiesinternal wiring and adds value with min-imal cost, while dramatically improvingsystem efficiency and functionality.

Sensors such as occupancy, temperaturefeedback, time-based dimming or bright-ness feedback greatly enhances energyefficiency, brightness consistency overlife, as well as product longevity.

Sensors can function independently ineach luminaire, or as an additional to acontrol device. Think of a hotel corridorwhich is globally dimmed via 0-10V at

night, yet each luminaire can increase itslight level in response to a built-in occu-pancy sensor.

Recently, the company decided toreplace the roof on its leaky warehousethat housed the necessities for creatingthe company’s Polish specialty. Whenthe roof and skylights began to leak,Ateeco president Tom Twardzik knewthat a long-term solution was necessary.Twardzik realized the environmentaland economical benefits of daylightingand began to search for high-perfor-mance, watertight alternatives to tradi-tional skylights.

With the advice of Barry Berger ofBerger Roofing Company in Orwigs-

burg, Pennsylvania, Ateeco chose a 20-year EPDM roofing system manufac-tured by Carlisle SynTec Systems, alongwith Carlisle’s DryLight™ daylightingsystem to replace the building’s existingskylights.

Carlisle’s DryLight skylights aremanufactured utilizing RIM (ReactionInjection Molding) technology, origi-nally introduced to the automotive in-dustry. The RIM technology is used inthe production of DryLight to encapsu-late the glazing into a pigmented, UV-stabilized, polyurethane retainer frame. This technology eliminates the need fortapes, gaskets and sealants between theframe and dome, and helps reduce thepotential for leaks associated with tradi-tional skylights.

Construction on the facility beganwith a tear-off of the building’s exist-ing roof and installation of a two-inchlayer of Carlisle HP-H polyiso insula-tion. Berger’s crew left a separationbetween the skylight opening and thepolyiso to allow for the installation ofwood blocking, which was used to an-chor the DryLight skylights onto therooftop. Next, Berger’s crew installedCarlisle’s 60-mil Sure-Seal® EPDMsingle-ply membrane onto the entireroof surface and cut 4-foot by 4-footholes to prepare for the DryLight in-stallation.

Roofers secured the skylight flangeto the wood blocking using galvanizedmetal fasteners. Carlisle’s Pressure-Sen-sitive EPDM curb flashing was cut to fit

the outside of the curb and applied afterbeing primed with Carlisle’s HP-250Primer. Laborsaving corner details wereapplied right before the Berger roofingcrew began to install the DryLight sky-light domes.

In matter of days, the Ateeco employ-ees were working in much-improved con-ditions underneath a leak-free,environmentally friendly rooftop. With a20-year total system warranty, Carlisleprovided Ateeco with the security of theonly total system warranty in the industry, giving Twardzik peace of mind far beyondwhat any other system could provide.

What is thevalue of a 100,000 rated fixture if the LEDmodules could be obsolete in five years?LuxEvo fixtures have upgradeable circuitboards that will allow for future upgradeswhile preserving the fixture housing andthe cooling capability of the Heat Spreader. We provide a long-term economic lightingsolution that keeps pace with technologyadvancements. So with LuxEvo there is noneed to wait on LED.

The claim has been made that LED’s

are directional, overly-focused, and cre-ate hotspots. LuxEvo addresses the issuewith optics and adjustability. Many of themodules in our Lights rotate from 5˚ to45˚ within the fixture. We can fine-tuneour fixtures for even light spread overlap-ping or tapering beam angles as neces-sary. We can also provide cut-off atproperty lines preventing light trespassand reducing off-site glare.

LuxEvo has also planned for the futureincluding the capability for off-peak andoff-the-grid lighting solutions. Our lightshave dedicated space in their driver com-partments for future battery and control up-grades to allow ultimate flexibility forupgrading to an integrated solar solution.

Each fixture (luminaire) can be con-figured with one to nine LED lamp mod-ules in a variety of geometric layoutsincluding hub-and-spoke. Each lampmodule in the fixture can be mounted atseveral angles, rotated to any position, and configured to deliver one of five dif-ferent beam spreads in several colortemperatures including 5000K (day-light) and 4000K (neutral). Each LEDlamp module in the fixture generates upto 6,200 lumens of light output, or over55,000 lumens from a 9-lamp fixture.

Special electrical wiring, network infra-structure wiring, computer servers, ormounting hardware is not required to in-stall, operate, or control the fixtures.

Each fixture is independently con-trollable wirelessly and can be turnedon, turned off, or dimmed to any levelfrom 100 percent down to one percent, instantly or gradually, and at any time, either individually by fixture or in fix-ture groups. What’s more, integratedwireless daylight sensors and occu-pancy sensors can be used to maintainconstant illumination at working orshopping areas on the floor while turn-ing fixtures off when no people or

equipment are present in the illuminatedarea or aisle.

The Cool Lumens light fixturesautomatically adjust to stable or vary-ing input line voltages from 100VACto 300VAC to deliver constant lightoutput even when connected to dirty-power grids. Each LED lamp modulein the fixture is passively cooledthrough a patent-pending design thatefficiently dissipates the heat gener-ated by the high-output LED array ineach lamp, maintaining the LEDs atoptimal operating temperature for ex-tended life without any fans or othercooling devices.

LED Perimeter Lighting SystemCAST Lighting’s most recent release isthe CAST LED Perimeter Lighting Sys-tem composed of compact and durableLED luminaires mounted on chain linkfence posts with a remote 24-volt powersupply. This system addresses a needthat others do not—an inexpensive, en-ergy-efficient way to enhance visual se-curity for extensive or remote propertyboundaries.

Solid Bronze Landscape Lighting SystemsCAST Lighting is best known for its ex-tremely durable, corrosion-resistant,landscape lighting luminaries.

Their most popular luminaire is theCAST Bullet (CBL1CB), a solid bronze

directional light often used in extremelyaggressive Oceanside applications. Withno coatings to crack or peel, these lumi-naires age naturally to a blue-greenpatina and actually improve in appear-ance over time.

The LED version of this Bullet(CBLED141) utilizes an award-winningLED module. This module was recog-nized by the IESNA in 2011 as a signif-icant advancement in the lightingindustry. They stated, “This is the firstLED module designed to be used in anenclosed luminaire.”

LED Research and DevelopmentWhen bright-light LED’s first entered themarket (about 4 years ago), product de-velopers at CAST Lighting started inves-tigating the potential for LED’s in theoutdoor environment. It became obviousthat LED retrofit lamps were a poor so-

lution, mainly because they could not suf-ficiently dissipate heat in typical plug-in-socket configurations. Even withadvances in LED technology, the heatissue could not be overcome.

Instead, CAST Lighting began aprocess of re-designing their luminariesand developing LED modules (with ade-quate thermal pathways). After 3 years ofintensive R & D, CAST Lighting re-leased its unique line of LED landscapelights. Their criteria for performancewent far beyond heat management, andincluded solutions for a host of LED per-formance issues. These include:

•Switchable Brightness. The CAST LEDBullet (CBLED141) and Tree Light(CTLED141) have a high/low brightnessswitch.•Changeable optics. These same two lu-minaires have optics that can be removed

curvatures engineered to maximize lightreflection for each fluorescent lamp size. The patented Nano reflector increases thefootcandle by 65 percent! If you are math-ematically inclined, you’d figure out thatyou can de-lamp one out of every two T8lamps, and get the same or better lighting. That is 50 percent energy savings.

Next we set course on converting theless efficient T12 and T8 lights to themore efficient T5 lamps. To address theconcern that the sheer slimness of the T5lamp renders it incompatible with theT12/T8 tombstones, we commissionedG13 adaptors to fit over the smaller G5socket on T5 tubes. The bigger obstaclewas resolving the retrofit process withoutadding significant labor. The solution wasto manufacture a T5 self-ballasted kit;

consisting of a lamp holder, which alsoacts to contain the T5 ballast, the G13adaptors and the T5 lamp. The result is anaverage of 30 percent energy savings.

Thereafter, our development openedup a wide spectrum of product offerings, centering around the T5 technology;such as troffers, shop lights, strip lights, etc. Not discounting the LED advances,we now also have a division focused onbringing the same cost-effective produc-

tion to LED products—recognizing thateach product class has pros and cons.

Seven years on, what we know forsure is that energy savings is a collectiveresponsibility, and no technology has amonopoly on this global mission. Theclear winner? The consumer, of course!

and changed by the installer. •Extended Voltage Range. All CASTLED’s have the widest input voltagerange in the industry. 9.6 to 28.8 volts forthe LED Bullet (CBLED141) Tree Light(CTLED141); and 8 to 18 volts for allother LED luminaires. •Spike and Surge Protection. CASTLighting LED drivers have componentsthat protect against prolonged surges andoccasional spikes.•EMI Filtering. All LED drivers generateEMI; occasions of interference withhousehold control devices are common.CAST Lighting drivers have EMI filtersfor conformance with FCC standards.•Replaceable Modules and Boards. AllCAST Lighting LED modules and boardscan be field-replaced.
