It all began on 15th march, 1959 A majority of the women
inhabitants of an old residential building in Girgaum (a thickly
populated area of South Bombay), were busy attending their usual
domestic chores.
A few of them, seven to be exact, gathered on the terrace of the
building and started a small inconspicuous function. The function
ended shortly, the result - production of 4 packets of Papads and afirm resolves to continue production.
This pioneer batch of 7 ladies had set the ball rolling. As the days went
by, the additions to this initial group of 7 was ever-increasing. The
institution began to grow.The early days were not easy. The institution had its trials and
tribulation. The faith and patience of the members were put to test on
several occasions - they had no money and started on a borrowed sum
of Rs. 80/-.

INTRODUCTIONLijjat Papad began as a cottage industry in1959, when a group of seven women began
rolling papads at the terrace of a building in
Girgaum, a densely opulated area in South
Bombay.
Its membership increased from 7 to 300
during the first three years.

The brand has grown to become Rs 300 crore
From that Rs 80 and more importantly many
households was saved from the clutches of
poverty.
With a modest beginning made in the year of
1974, with 25 women members and a turn overof Rs.12.6 lakhs, it has reached a staggering
growth of Rs.3.83 crores in 2008 with 308 women
members.

SALES PROMOTION
In the earlier stage it does not has the
marketing strategies like advertising . It
packs its papada in plain covers .
To select a distributor, they first give an
advertisement in newspapers for the
areas they have marked.
A distributor pays us Rs150000 as
deposit
They have about 32 distributors inMumbai. Each distributor picks up an
average of 100 boxes per day from the
depot.

Starting as a small group of seven women in
1959, today Lijjat has more than 40,000
members in 62 branches across 17 Indian
states.

Lijjat also provides scholarships and awards to
support and encourage the education of sisters
children, especially the daughters.
Lijjat does not accept donations, but gives
donations, which enhances members self-esteem
and pride in their own organization.

The member sisters are rewarded
for extra effort they put into theirwork. For instance, the sisters at
Rajkot branch (in Gujarat state)
received Rs 4,000 each as an
incentive forrolling more papads for
the year 2002.
Member sisters at Mumbai and
Thane branches each received a 5-
gram gold coin as their incentive for
the same year
