Lorraine said, “So far it looks like we will get

approximately 10 boats this year.Last year the BestBoat was Fishizzle out of St. Thomas. We look for-ward to this event every year and it is a fitting tributeto my father who loved the sea and the excitement ofcatching the big fish.”

Big thanks go to event sponsors GuardianSurveying Services, Richardson’s Rigging, Myetts,Anegada Reef Hotel, and D&C Construction.

So get out your best fishing tackle and head outto beautiful Anegada this weekend for some livelycompetition and fun times.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go outon the town.”

Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands EnglishCreole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news aboutwhen and where to “lime” in the British VirginIslands.

Relaxation has proven to be physically and men-

tally crucial for an ongoing, healthy lifestyle. Hence,

the art of limin’ takes on major significance. Orders are:

“You’ve Got To Lime”.

My family seems to have known this information

for at least a few generations. My father owned a pack-

age store (that’s what liquor stores were called in

Connecticut back in the day) and the men would lime

out in front of “Spike’s Spirit Shop” and solve the prob-

lems of the world. Dad, Spike, was also known as “Mr.

Groovy”, a name that suggests serious limin’ potential.

My son Reeve, who incidentally was lovingly

called the groover when just a wee lad, has at times

exhibited incredible limin’ potential. In his freshman

year at Occidental College in California (Obama spent

his first year of college there), I received the student

newsletter proclaiming Reeve had won the “Chiilin’

Award”. Further along in the publication, I got a

glimpse of his winning photo: My son, prone on a

lounge chair by the pool. He did graduate… eventually.

Here in the BVI, the art of limin’ “to hang around

idly and/or to go out on the town” takes on many

faces. You have the all day lime, the surprise lime (the

potential to last all day is ever present), the romantic

lime (by the beach maybe with Jon Lucien singing

The Art Of The Lime

“Rashida” in the background) and many, many more.

Now for me, limin in Anegada is most memorable.

I remember walking a couple of miles into the

Settlement to visit with Doris Rodriguez in front of her

Faulkner’s Country Store. She’d be waiting with chairs

in the shade, icy Presidentes out of the freezer and the

latest “whoop de do” about the island. Next, I recall

getting up an out by 7am to meet Mark, Dean and

Jeffrey Soares on their dock at Neptune’s Treasure –

they’re dressing out fresh caught tuna and we’re there

with wasabi and soy for sashimi that melts in your

mouth.

What a way to spend your time – meaningful

exchanges, heartfelt laughter, a smile on your face and

peace within. Yes, the doctor’s orders are to “Lime On”.

makes him pretend to be gay. And, Dex’s best mate

Marcus (Steve Howey), the hopeless lothario with

terrible chat up lines who has designs on Rachel –

but not to the exclusion on any other woman that

catches his eye.

It’s a watchable film, but the odd thing is that

the engaged couple is clearly mismatched and the

“best friends” friendship of bride and bridesmaid is

a one-way street. However, make up your own mind

- the highlight for me was definitely the witty line

when Ethan declares the Hamptons as being like “a

zombie movie directed by Ralph Lauren!”

Ethan, Rachel, Kate & Dex

Something BorrowedWedding movies are somewhat popular right

now with the likes of the fabulous Bridesmaids and

now Something Borrowed, which both raise ques-

tions about love, commitment and marriage. Rachel

(Ginnifer Goodwin) is a talented attorney at a top

New York law firm, single and loyal best friend to the

exuberant Darcy (Kate Hudson).

Darcy is the best friend from hell, a self-cen-

tered party girl who is engaged to Dex (Colin

Egglesfield). Dex was Rachel’s best friend and confi-

dant at law school. The two clearly had chemistry

back then, and over an “end of finals” dinner looked

like they were going to become an item. That was

until Darcy made her untimely entrance, charmed

Dex and literally left Rachel out in the cold.

However, after celebrating her ‘surprise’ 30th

birthday, Rachel unexpectedly ends up in the arms of

Dex. She is, at first, bit by a sense of morality at her

actions, however, so in love is she that the romance

between herself and Dex creeps along secretly. Dex

seems unable to break off the engagement to Darcy

and so everything returns to a kind of normal, with

weekends spent at the Hamptons where Rachel is

still on the outside looking in.

Meanwhile, Ethan (John Krasinski), Rachel’s

constant confidante and secret admirer is busy evad-

ing the affections of Darcy's hopelessly love-struck

friend Claire (Ashley Williams), whose pursuit of him

Complicated Love LifeDear Koren,

Everywhere I go men harass me. At my job,

where I live and on facebook telling me that I'm cute

and they want to get to know me. To tell you the truth

they are not even my type; I’m talking about 35 to 45

year old men. I am only 20 years old. However there is

this nice male at my job that I'm crushing on and he is

crushing on me also but both of us are already in rela-

tionships with other people. I really love my

boyfriend, he's my everything. We are dating for 3 and

a half years now. Can you please help me Koren?

– Crushing

Dear Crushing,

You don’t sound like you need too much help,

you are in a position where many women wish they

could be in – you have the rush! If someone tries to

date you, politely but firmly let them know that you

are in a relationship and not interested in their offer.

Be mindful of your behaviour and your attitude;

ensure that you are not sending mixed signals where

your actions say “I’m available” and your mouth says

something else.

Leave the young man at your job alone. The

grass always looks greener on the other side, but it

is not always so. You are seeing him when he is

dressed up for work and looking and sounding good,

but you have no idea what he is like behind closed

doors – so be satisfied with what you have. You will

meet attractive men all the time, but when you make

a commitment to someone, maintain it. You don’t

want to hurt your boyfriend and this other dude’s girl

by doing something that you might regret and will

you trust him if he is willing to leave someone else

for you?

Regarding your boyfriend, I am glad that you

love him, but I do not think it is a good idea for one

person to be your everything – what happens if he

leaves? Then again, if he is your everything, how

come another man still has the power to capture

your interest so intensely? You are a young person

and seem to be very passionate, but make sure that

there is space in your life for friends, family and

other interests so you can have a full and complete

life and be happy.

Travis Blossoms Into TV Starcials - Excedrin, Hostess Cupcakes.”

There wasn’t one huge role in the beginning. There were after-school movies, guest shots on TVshows Spenser: For Hire, Worlds Beyond and TalesFrom the Darkside, and movies including Three Menand a Baby and Eight Men Out.

“I have continually worked,” she says. “I honest-ly hope I can work until my dying day.”

She cites Vivien Leigh and Jane Alexander amongher influences. “I know her quite well,” Travis says ofAlexander, “who she is and how she comports herselfas an actress.”

Among the actors whom Travis admires is peren-nial favorite Meryl Streep, not just because she’ssuch a great actress but because she has “raised afamily and stayed married and had all of these rolesand still can be at the top of her game.”

No matter what role Travis plays, “at the end ofthe day, my kids want me to wash it off and be mom.”

Travis is also on The CW’s Hart of Dixie, but thatis a smaller commitment, and she is contracted forthe ABC sitcom. “It’s feast or famine in this business,”she says.

Last Man Standing has undeniable similaritiesto Allen’s huge hit Home Improvement, but he saysthe role of his on-air wife is different.

“Nancy is very, very lively and funny,” Allen says.“And Pat (Richardson) was intense and sharp in everyway.”

“It feels like I’m on a train gathering momen-tum,” Travis says. “It feels like a huge amount ofpotential. ABC is offering a wide berth. There is a lotbehind it. It’s not just the show. I feel like that for me- I am turning a huge corner in who I am and thematurity I have, and the ages of my kids. I feel there’snothing holding me back.”

Jacqueline Cutler

The role of a smartmom, effortlesslybalancing work andlife, comes naturallyto Nancy Travis.Starring oppositeTim Allen in Last ManStanding, Tuesdayson ABC, Travis againplays the role of a

patient mom who’s a little smarter than everyonearound her.

“I’ve perfected it, I guess,” she says. “I alwayslike playing a wife and mother.”

The role comes easily because Travis has beenmarried to producer Robert N. Fried for 16 years, andthey have two sons.

Though Travis works consistently, she doesn’twork constantly, allowing her to go to her sons’games, the beach, movies and occasionally draggingthem to the theater.

Travis has spent time in theater, includingBroadway, where she was in I’m Not Rappaport. Likemost actors, her debut was a bit more modest. Travis’first time on stage was in fourth grade in AliceThrough the Looking Glass, in which she was thethird flower.

By high school, Travis knew she wanted to be anactor. She studied at NYU and waited tables in anUpper East Side restaurant while going on auditions.“My last year of college and for two years after, Icouldn’t get arrested,” Travis says.

Travis finally landed commercials and was in aLevi’s campaign that stressed “it was OK to have curlyhair, to be who you are,” she says. “And that bleweverything open. I started booking a lot of commer-

Fielding In The Pan Am GamesBy Dean “The Sportsman” GreenawayBy Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Three male track and field athletes—all of whomwill compete in field events—will participate in the PanAm Games competition in Guadalajara, Mexico, startingon Monday.

The Games, which has 6,000 athletes competingin 36 sports, opened on Saturday and runs throughOctober 30.

Representing the territory will be Omar Jones,Keron Stoute and Jevonte Croal, all of who will maketheir Pan Games debut. The Pan Am Games is aContinental Championships held every four years and isthe last major competition before the Olympic Games. Each region of the world has a Continental Games.

The Pan Am Games targets 42 countries in theAmericas—from Canada and the United States in thenorth to Brazil and Argentina in the south and theCaribbean countries. All competing countries musthave an Olympic Committee to be eligible and form partof the International Olympic Committee Family.

Anguilla, Montserrat and theTurks and Caicos Islands for exam-ple, cannot participate in the Pan AmGames because they do not have anOlympic Committee. Also, they arenot eligible to participate in theCentral American and CaribbeanGames nor the Olympic Games. However, they participate in theCommonwealth Games, which has adifferent structure whose affiliationis to the Commonwealth GamesFederation which is not part of theInternational Olympic Committeestructure.

Prior to the Pan Am Games’ opening ceremony onFriday night in which Jones carried the flag, a team wel-coming ceremony was planned for Wednesday, wherethe delegation would be welcomed to the Games andthe Territory’s flag raised along with that of othernations. The ceremony was cancelled and held onThursday, because of the effects of the hurricane thathit Puerto Vallarta and affected Guadalajara with heavyrains and cold temperatures.

With the Pan Am Games being held so late in theyear, none of our top female athletes who are in their offseason phase in preparation for the 2012 season, willcompete.

Croal will be the first to see action in the Long Jumpon Tuesday. Stoute takes to the High Jump on Thursdayand Jones in the Javelin Throw on Friday.

There is also a Pan Am Jr. Track and Field competi-tion which was held in Miami in July and is held every

two years in a different location. Thiscompetition targets track and fieldonly.

The BVI has been participatingin the Pan Am Games since 1983,after becoming a member of theInternational Olympic Committee in1982. The Pan Am Games were thesecond Games in which the territoryparticipated after debuting in theCentral American and CaribbeanGames in 1982.

The first Olympic Games partic-ipation was in 1984 and participationin the Commonwealth Games beganin 1990.
