Hello There!

Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2014 season, packed full of great theatre and arts events this New Year. I always look forward to the first half of the year, as it is chock full of festivals offering something for everyone.

We start with newvolutions in January – a micro-festival of innovative performance for the curious and then move straight on to re:generation in Feb/March – our festival of work by and for young people, which this year features Ghost Town by award-winning Pilot Theatre, commissioned by LOV, made right here in Lincolnshire and featuring a curtain-raiser by local school pupils.

We then have the week-long David Greig Festival at the end of March, celebrating one of the UK’s most prominent playwrights, which includes Actors Touring Company’s moving and powerful production of The Events, featuring two local community choirs.

Over Easter we’re teaming up with Lincoln Drill Hall and The Collection to present EASTIVAL – a children’s festival for the city of Lincoln, offering artistic treats, such as a new version of Pinocchio written by Michael Rosen and Meeting Mr Boom a dance show for children that takes place on an inflatable set!

Then in May we’ll be presenting the Final Degree Shows of the University of Lincoln’s Dance and Drama students, whilst taking part in Lincoln Inspired and playing host to the Big Chris Barber Band as part of Lincoln Jazz Week – and there’s much more besides!

Award-winning writer and theatre maker Michael Pinchbeck has created three devised performances inspired by the work of William Shakespeare. The Beginning, an interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Middle, a deconstruction of Hamlet, and The End triggered by a stage direction from The Winter’s Tale, are to be shown together for the first time as The Trilogy. Fusing an experimental approach to Shakespeare’s text with the company’s personal stories about their first or last times onstage The Trilogy asks the audience to enter a world where a performance can be a rehearsal, text can be both script and set and they are always aware of where the fire exits are.

David Greig is one of the UK’s most vital playwrights and a prominent voice in contemporary Scottish culture as both writer, director and the first dramaturg for National Theatre Scotland. His work has been performed at the Traverse, the Royal Court, the RSC and National Theatre and internationally. This week-long retrospective of his work features finished productions, work-in-progresses, performative responses and an academic symposium on Sat 29 March.

The world premiere of the latest play by the scientist-playwright Carl Djerassi, the man whose ‘invention’ of the contraceptive pill changed the world forever. Set in the 1960s, the play focuses on the professional and sexual jealousies of Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, all intellectual giants of the first half of the 20th century.

Foreplay is presented as part of the Performing Science: Dialogues Across Cultures conference, at University of Lincoln 23 - 25 April 2014.

Jazz Legend, Chris Barber, celebrates his 65th Anniversary as band-leader in 2014 with a Europe-wide concert tour.

Chris formed his first Band in 1949 at the age of nineteen and has since gone on to become not only Europe’s most successful and influential bandleaders, but a bona fide jazz legend.

With his 10-piece band, featuring a 7-strong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet ... before going back to ‘When the Saints’!

The Big Chris Barber Band combine all these ingredients into an exciting and moving evening of world-class jazz.

This series of works by second year students offers a diverse mix of performance taking place in and responding to sites across Lincoln. Utilising text, movement, narrative and pervasive media to tell the stories of places that we know, think we know or have never noticed before.

Join us for our programme of dance, created and performed by the dance students at Uni-versity of Lincoln. These works include new choreography by international artists and contem-porary repertory performed by Lincoln School of Performing Arts undergraduates. We’ll also be presenting student created work, ranging from studio show-ings of scores, to concert dance, to third year final performance work, as well as performances by the MA Choreography students.

A programme of cross-disciplinary, multi-media performances that embraces the potential of technologies new and old across all art forms. These works effortlessly ignore disciplinary boundaries and labels to present a truly experimental and investigatory approach.

A mini-festival of solo theatre. From comedy and monologue to lecture demonstration and one-on-one performance, these final degree shows offer you the chance to indulge in an eclectic, mix-and-match programme over a jam packed week of glorious, decadent, unforgettable performance.

Join us as our graduating companies take complete control of the venue to produce a series of full-length performances. With a diverse mix of theatre and performance on offer, this degree- showcase promises to produce some unforgettable moments conceived and created by the next generation of theatre makers.

A special evening to celebrate the conclusion of Jazzpac’s ‘Miles Ahead’ project, which has engaged young musicians and youth orchestras across Lincolnshire and led by 2012 Mobo award winner, pianist Zoe Rahman.

Since the beginning of 2013 Zoe has been working with Jazz Vehicle Youth Jazz Orchestra, so expect the Orchestra to come refreshed and playing better than ever. Zoe will also showcase her own Quartet bringing a unique mix of contemporary jazz flavoured with her Bengali and Irish roots. Idris Rahman – clarinet, Alec Dankworth – double bass and Gene Calderazzo – drums, complete this splendid line-up.
