Horror lessons take on real feelinside classroom’s darkened tentSoehl Middle School language arts teacher Jan Macha put up a tent in his classroom and dimmed the lights to add authen-tic atmosphere to lessons about horror literature. Macha and his students sat with their textbooks in the tent, taking turns reading passages from Edgar Allen Poe’s
“The Tell-Tale Heart” and dis-cussing literary elements such as irony, symbolism and plot. Each student used a small flashlight to read in the dark, while night sounds played in the background to add to the atmosphere. Click here to read more, see more pho-tos, and watch News 12 report.

Friends remember ‘the soul of Soehl’ The Linden Public Schools family came together on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to honor and remember “the soul of Soehl.” An elec-tronic sign has been erected outside Soehl Middle School’s Henry Street entrance with a dedication reading, “In Loving Memory of Elizabeth Givens, 40 Years of Service,” honoring the school’s longtime secretary, who died on April 8. Several members of Givens’ family attended the ceremony, sit-ting before a poster-sized photo of Givens that the school had created. The photo is made up of hundreds of small photos of the students who attended Soehl last year. Click here to read more and see more photos.
Big blue bully at School 5?School No. 5 students had a blast on Oct. 1 meeting Yojo, a big, blue, fuzzy creature who delivered a strong but hilarious anti-bullying message. The children watched as Yojo learned that his own bullying behavior was wrong, then helped teach them what to do if they are being bullied or see someone else being bullied. See more photos.

Students at Linden High School presented a unique recycling project on Oct. 11, taking items that would otherwise be discarded and reusing them in new and beautiful ways. The students in Tania Miguelez’s In-ternational Baccalaureate Span-ish class got the idea from the film “Landfill Harmonic.” The
documentary shows children in Paraguay who create and play musical instruments made out of garbage. Some of the items the LHS student created included hanging gardens with a filtration system, wind chimes, a child’s dollhouse, a bookcase, pillows, and chandeliers. Click here for more photos.
