Calvary

Calvary Baptist Church is a body of believers whose purpose is …

To glorify God by becoming disciples who know and live God’s will.

Alpha is Coming!

So just what is Alpha? The Alpha course covers the basics of Christianity. It answers questions like: Who is Jesus? and Why did He die?

The Alpha course lasts 12 weeks, with a weekend getaway in the middle. Each week, guests gather for about two and a half hours. They share an informal meal, sing a few songs, listen to a DVD talk on how Christianity approaches the question at hand, then gather into small groups for discussion.

As a church, our desire is for this to eventually be an outreach program, but we realize that before you can tell others what Alpha is about, you might want to experience it yourself. The Alpha program will launch at Calvary on Sunday evening, February 17th. You can sign up in the Son Room. If you have more questions, please contact Gary and Lydia Gilman at: 503-385-8397.

2013 Can You Believe It? A brand new year! So what’s the big memory you carry over from 2012? The Olympics? The elections? Hurricane Sandy? Calvary Baptist Church burning its mortgage and being debt-free (whoohoo)? Maybe it’s

more personal - a birth in your family, or a death, someone having graduated, or having found a new job. Undoubtedly for each of us 2012 encapsulates a myriad of memories that we will continue to carry with us, but what about 2013? What are you anticipating the new year will hold?

Of course, much of what awaits we cannot anticipate, but we can set goals and make plans. Now we’d never want to call them “New Year’s resolutions” because we all know that’s the kiss of death when it comes to developing new habits or trying to establish a new direction for our life, but we also know that without some-thing specific in mind, another year comes and goes and nothing has changed. In terms of your walk with God, what are you hoping 2013 will hold? Are you looking for a better under-standing of the Bible? Perhaps you’d like to feel closer to God. Maybe your hope is that your prayer time would feel more conversational and not so formal which is now the case. It could be that you’ve got a good grasp of what the Bible

Page 2

A Message from Pastor Bret

says, now you just need the strength to move from knowing what it says to doing what it says. Perhaps God is prompting you to get involved with helping with the Children’s Ministry or the Youth Ministry, or to do something, anything that involves a more “hands-on” type of ministry involve-ment.

I don’t know what God may be saying to you for 2013, but what I do know is that it’s very unlikely to happen if we are not deliber-ate about it. How do we work towards making sure that we really do grow closer to God in 2013? Here are some quick suggestions:

1. Pray to seek what God is specifically calling you to

do in 2013 to deepen your walk with Him. There are a thousand things you could do, but what does God want you to do?

2. Be specific about what you are hoping to accom-plish. If you want to spend more time in prayer, how much more? How many minutes a day? How many days a week?

3. Finally, remember why you’re doing it. Not out of guilt or to please the pastor. You’re doing it (hopefully) because you genuinely desire a deeper and more personal walk with God.

May 2013 be a remarkable year for you,

your family, and for Calvary as we continue to glorify God by becoming disciples who know and live God’s will. Happy New Year!

Pastor Bret

We are looking for volunteers of all ages to come out and help take down the Christmas decorations on January 5th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. Please sign up on a response card or at the table in the Son room.

Our Family Prayer Concerns

The family and friends of Lucille Regan as they mourn Bill’s passing.

The family and friends of Elba Pielstick as they mourn Zetta’s passing.

Joanna French’s father is struggling with health concerns.

Dina Stubb’s co-worker, Sara Smith, is 7 month pregnant and is having concerns about serious problems with the baby’s development.

Doris Russell’s sister-in-law, Virginia Becktold, has lost most of her sight and is

struggling with a rare lung disorder.

Robin Bradley’s son, David, desires physical and mental healing.

Continue to pray for Megan Stout’s health issues and for her children’s hearts to be

filled with the spirit of the Lord.

Sophia Macaitis’ father recently passed and she is struggling with grief.

Continue to Remember: Lucille Reagan, Donna Bauer, Miriam Noyes, Clyde Gilman, Gertrud Pump, Roger Gookin, Lee and Ann Wiens, Norman and Alice Kelley, Corwin Fields, Yvonne Henderson, those unable to attend service due to health or aging concerns, family and friends who are unemployed, Christians throughout the world who regularly face persecution for their faith, those affected by the recent tragedies in Oregon and Connecticut, and those serving in the military and their families.

Family Praise

Doris Russell has a new great-grandson!

Megan Stout reported an increase in their taxi business.

The following are recovering from recent surgery: David Osborn’s granddaughter,

Amanda Marr; Dina Stubbs’ granddaughter, Isabelle; Ted Moore; and JoAnn Lindorfer’s brother-in-law, James.

Thank You The Pielstick family thanks you for the many cards received for Zetta while she was un-der Hospice Care. We also thank you for the many sympathy cards received. We are very blessed to belong to a very loving and caring church family.

Pielstick Family Thank you to all who participated in the Children’s Musical and made the program a success.

Bev Flood and Shannon Merzenich Thank you to all who took the time to select a child from our Angel Tree and provide a gift to brighten that child’s Christmas.

Direct Line to

the Father

After leaving them He

went up on a mountainside

to pray. Mark 6:46

What time do we give to prayer in the 24

hours of the day? What progress can we mark, one year after another,

in the fervency, full-ness, and earnestness of our prayers? These are humbling inquiries, but they are useful for

our souls. Our Master’s strong crying and tears, His nights in prayer, His

frequent withdrawals to private places for

communion with the Father, are things more talked of and admired

than imitated. We live in an age of hurry, bustle, and so-called activity.

Men and women are tempted continually to cut short their private devotions and abridge

their prayers. The church must learn to copy its Head more

closely.

How is everyone doing? I hope your Christmas was excellent. It is always interesting to me how quickly we switch gears from Christmas to not-Christmas. We spend so much time as a society ramping up for Christmas, but it is really easy to forget about the miracle that happens at Christmas. I happened upon this devotion from one of my favorite speakers, Chuck Swindoll, who does a great job of describ-ing what God has done for us by sending Jesus.

Scott Wood

Undeserved Kindness by Charles R. Swindoll

http://www.insight.org/library/insight-for-today/undeserved-kindness.html

If you have traveled to London, you have perhaps seen royalty. If so, you may have noticed sophistication, aloofness, distance. On occasion, royalty in England will make the news because someone in the ranks of no-bility will stop, kneel down, and touch or bless a commoner. That is grace. There is nothing in the commoner that deserves being noticed or touched or blessed by the royal family. But because of grace in the heart of the queen, there is the desire at that moment to pause, to stoop, to touch, even to bless.

To show grace is to extend favor or kindness to one who doesn't de-serve it and can never earn it. Receiving God's acceptance by grace al-ways stands in sharp contrast to earning it on the basis of works.

Every time the thought of grace appears, there is the idea of its being undeserved. In no way is the recipient getting what he or she deserves. Favor is being extended simply out of the goodness of the heart of the giver.

“To show grace is to extend favor or kindness to one who doesn’t deserve it.”

Chuck Swindoll

But we believe that we are saved through the grace

of the Lord Jesus. Acts 15:11

James, Kellie, Jonas, and Jamison Batdorff

James was born and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon. He grew up going to the First Baptist Church in Coos Bay, then later became a member of Judson Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon. In addition to Oregon he has lived in Washington, Idaho, California, Hawaii, Floridan, Illinois, and Texas. James graduated from Coos Bay High School in 1985, and has a B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from Oregon State University. He served in the military for 28 years, and is now

looking for a civilian job. James enjoys backpacking, camping, cars, chess, and computers. In the past he has been a Sunday School teacher.

Kellie is a true Oregonian having been born Ashland. She and her sister are twins, and their older siblings are also twins. Kellie’s family moved to Coos Bay in 1985. Kellie graduated from Coos Bay High School in 1996, and has worked as a life guard/WSI swim coach, cashier at Fred Meyers, and an assistant at the West Hills Animal Hospital. She has a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and qualifies as a Red Cross swim instructor. Kellie’s interests include swimming, camping, reading and scrapbooking. While at Judson Baptist she served as a nursery attendant.

James and Kellie first met in the North Bend swimming pool. They were married in 2001 in the Coos Bay First Baptist Church. They are the proud parents of two sons, Jonas 7, and Jamison 4. With both their families in Coos Bay the Batdorffs spend a lot of time at the coast.

Annual Report Information Deadline For those of you in a leadership position that need to submit an annual report, please turn your information in to the office no later than January 17, 2013.

Men on the Move is a great mission for our church and needs to be continued. We are a group of volunteers who help members and participants at Calvary when they move from one location to another. The moves typically take around three hours and require 4-8 members to form our moving team. It is important for us to know how much help we can expect for the move. We are always looking for more volunteers, both men and women, because we need to develop a large pool of volunteers so we

can avoid calling on the same members each time. It’s not all work. We always seem to have fun and usually go to lunch together after the move is complete. We really need some younger people to help with this ministry. The more names on the list the fewer times a person helps. If you are unable to help, please keep this ministry in your prayers. If you are interested in this ministry please call: Dave Wells at 503-588-9275 or email him at [email protected].

Interfaith Hospitality Network Hosting Schedule

Our first hosting rotation of 2013 will begin on February 10th and run through February 17th. Please mark this on your calendar and prayerfully consider how you might serve this ministry. If you have questions or want to sign up to help during Calvary’s week of hosting IHN, please call Deb Grenz at 503-480-4972.

A special thank you to the ABW for their generous donations to the IHN program. They gathered lots of toothbrushes, soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants, and other household goods to help these families in their transition to permanent housing.

Six Days of Genesis Through a generous donation from the Batdorffs (James, Kellie, Jonas and Jamison) our library now has the DVD series The Six Days of Genesis available to check out. This DVD series follows the six creation days, as found in the first two chapters of the Bible, expounding each scripture with scientific facts and theologically sound doctrine.

30 Seconds More We all know we should pray, but for some people it seems like a daunting task. How do you start? What do you say? Where do you find the time? Suppose all you had to do was to pray for 30 seconds, could you do that? Pastor Bret will be talking more about this on January 20th, but start thinking now. Are you willing to spend 30 seconds more with God?

Bible Reading Plans

Whether you’ve done it before, tried it before, or just thought about it before, 2013 would be a GREAT year to read through the Bible. You can do it in only about 12 minutes a day and we have various reading plans available to help you in the process. You can pick up a Bible reading plan in the Son Room or the sanctuary entryway.
