Interesting, but useless trivia!

In the early 1800s, cowboys from Argentina were called “gauchos.”

The gauchos invented a snack that people today can buy in any con-

venience store. What snack did they invent? Was it:

A. Potato chips

B. Beef jerky

C. Roasted peanuts

Answer will be given in next week’s

L&S.

The Music Makers

and The Young Mu-

sicians will be shar-

ing with us Sunday

in the AM Service.

“If you

continue in

My word,

you really are

My disciples.

You will

know the

truth, and the

truth will set

you free.”

John 8:31-32

Hymn Title: How Firm a Foundation

Hymn Tune: FOUNDATION

Words: John Rippon’s Selection of

Hymns, 1787

Music: Joseph Funk’s Genuine

Church Music, 1832

* * * * *

The author, “K,” of this hymn is a

mystery. The hymn first appeared in

1787 in Selection of Hymns, published

by Dr. John Rippon, pastor of Carter’s

Lane Baptist Church in London. The

hymn has sometimes been attributed

to Dr. Rippon’s associate, Robert

Keene, who likely was at least the

hymn tune’s composer.

The original title of the hymn ap-

peared as Scripture Promises, with

the words of 2 Peter 1:4 written below

it: “Exceeding great and precious

promises.” In fact, the stanzas of the

text are based upon specific promises

in the Scriptures: Isaiah 41:10, Isaiah

43:2, 2 Corinthians 12:9, and He-

brews 13:5. “What more can He say

then He has said?” asks the hymn

writer.

Sometimes the task of a worship

leader is to help the people speak their

praise, thanksgiving, confession or

supplication to God. Sometimes the

worshiper leader’s task is to speak the

words of God to the people. This

hymn presents us with this task.

* * * * *

As you prepare to lead this hymn in

worship:

Remember that many members of

our congregation are being rocked by

“fiery trials.” Their confidence in God

may be shaken. Hebrews 12:28 says,

“Therefore, since we are receiving a

kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us

be thankful, and so worship God ac-

ceptably with reverence and awe.”

Ask God to use this time of worship

to speak to His people, reminding

them of His promises, assuring them

of their firm foundation.

Promises from God’s Word

God’s Promise from Psalm 147:3 (NCV) “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”

What Does This Mean For Me? When you feel very sad, you can turn to God and pray. He always cares for

you, and will help to ease your sadness so you can begin feeling better.
