WHAT IS ORAL MUCOSA ?Oral mucosa is the moist lining of oral cavity , also
known as oral mucous membrane.

LINING MUCOSA
SPECIALIZED MUCOSA
LINING MUCOSA IS THE TYPE OF MUCOSA NOTED FOR ITS : SOFTER
SURFACE TEXTURE,MOIST SURFACE AND ABILITY YO STRETCH AND BE COMPRESSED ACTING AS A CUSHION FOR THE UNDERLYING STRUCTURES.
ASSOCIATED WITH NON-KERATINIZED STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM .
LOCATION :
o Labial mucosa ( inner lip)o Buccal mucosa (inner cheek)o Alveolar mucosao Ventral surface of tongueo Floor of the moutho Soft palate

NONKERATINIZED ORAL EPITHELIUM
The most common form of epithelium in the oral cavity
It is the superficial layers of lining mucosa each lining mucosa has at least 3 layers within the
epithelium which are :superficial layer (stratum superficiale)intermediate layer (stratum intermedia)basal layer (stratum basale)
SUPERFICIAL LAYERThe most superficial level in nonkeratinized
epitheliumDifficult to divide exactly between the
superficial layer and the intermedium layer in lining mucosa when viewing histological section
Consist of larger similarly stacked polyhedral epithelial cell with the outer cell flattening into squamos
INTERMEDIATE LAYER The layer of epithelium superficial to the basal
layerComposed of larger, staked,polyhedral –
shaped cellThe cell appear larger or plumper than the
basal layer because they have larger amounts cytoplasm
BASAL LAYERo The deepest of the 3 layerso It is a single layer of cuboidal epithelial
cell overlying the basement membraneo Situated superior to the lamina propria
LAMINA PROPRIA
Location : deep to the basement membrane
Main fiber group : collagen fibers but elastic fibers are present in certain regions of the oral cavity
It made up of 2 layers : papillary & dense

DENSE LAYER
SUBMUCOSALocation : deep to lamina propriaOverlying muscle and allowing
compression of superficial tissue – allow to serve in region where a movable is needed (speech , mastication , swallow)
HYPERKERATINIZATION OF BUCCAL MUCOSA
Buccal mucosa usually NONKERATINIZED This tissue undergone chronic physical injury to the area
as a result of : grinding of the teeth
bruxism of the teeth
So, the buccal mucosa shown to larger white, rough, raised calloused lesion
