    Editorial Exhaust Idle Ramblings

In terms of racing enjoyment, this past

month was a wonderful peak for me. TwoSolo-II events (including my first bronzepin!!!), an EVCC event (less spectacularperhaps, but I had a good day in the sun),and finally the US Grand Prix inIndianapolis. A good way to round out theseason, as most racing series are coming toan end. As horrible as it sounds, I'm sureby February, I'll be anxious for just aboutany kind of racing; I hope the winter(yuck) slalom will scratch that itch.

Things are settling down in the Link. Thetransition is over, and Ayan and myself aregetting into the swing of how it all comestogether. As always, we are looking for themembers of the club to help us the most bycontributing to the Link. Photos, stories,

jokes, reviews, reports -- anything iswelcome. A bonus for contributors is thateach article is worth worker points forthose of you in the running for trophies atthe upcoming MCO banquet (November25th).

This is also the last month with this cover.Next month will be the 2 colour cover thathas been mentioned often this year, butwas delayed until the November issue.Perhaps appropriately, as it will bedistributed at the Annual General Meeting, where we will see the new club executive. The new cover will be cheaper to produce, which will directly effect the cash flow of the club.

Until then, I hope you enjoy this edition of the Link.

    Rally Affiliation by Jaak Laan

    forward by Rob M icroys

There has been some continuing puzzlement as to the MCO's position towards becomingaffiliated with Rally Sport Ontario (RSO)and Canadian Association of Rally Sport (CARS) and the financial arrangements that are in place between CASC-OR and theserally sanctioning bodies. Jaak's article, originally published in the June 2000 issueof The Link, describes the relationshipbetween the organizations as it is in placetoday, and intention of the current executive, which the new executive in

November will hopefully also support fully. As a side note there currently are a number of other dually affiliated clubs who use the

formal agreemen t which exists betweenCASC-OR and RSO, including BEMC, TAC,PMSC, StCat. We hope that the members of the club intend on supporting this.

The original article as printed follows

There has been some confusing informationabout the allocation of membership feeswith MCO affiliating with the national rallysanctioning body. The facts are relativelysimple and are part of a formal arrangementmade with the Canadian Automobile SportClubs (CASC-OR), the CanadianAssociation of Rally Sport (CARS) and

    their various regional organizations.

    First the facts...

MCO (the club, not individual members)will pay $100 annually to join the nationalbody, the Canadian Association of RallySport (CARS). $50 will then go fromCARS to Rally Sport Ontario (RSO). Asper a formal arrangement with CASC,affiliated clubs then decide independentlywhether to, and how, to split the members'CASC-OR fee so that their members can beofficially part of rallies according to twopossible options:

    (1) (PROPOSED) MCO would choose thatthe $15 CASC-OR fee be split ONLY forthose members who choose to affiliate withRSO. In that case, for those members only,$7.50 would go to CASC and $7.50 to RSO.For the majority of MCO m embers who arenot interested in rallying, ALL of their $15would continue to go to CASC-OR as usual.

    OR, the other option...

    (2) (NOT being proposed) MCO couldchoose that the $15 is split equally for allmembers i.e. $7.50 to CASC-OR and $7.50to RSO.

Under Option 1, if five current memberscheck off the rally option on theirmembership application form that would

mean $37.50 less annually going from our

club to CASC-OR and instead goinsupport rallying. Those mem bers wstill be supporting CASC-OR with thehalf of their fees. That would still CASC-OR receiving $2,512.50 from members if we continue with havingmembers. Even if double that many psay 10 MCO members, choose to surallying, CASC-OR would still get $from us and RSO would get $75 members' levies. As MCO membershbeen growing, CASC will actually remore money from us over the next yeless.

At the May Executive meeting, Executive decided unanimously that should affiliate with rallying accordiOption 1 in time for our members tofor the 2001 season. That will meanthis coming December, after the AGeneral Meeting where mem bers elecnext Executive, MCO will contact Cwill submit the $100 for the calenda2001, and then will amend our Mmembership application form to amembers the option of directing $7.50their $15 CASC fee to rallying.

The benefits to MCO members who cthe rally option will be that they will bto earn points and compete in roadchampionships such as the YokohWinter Rally series or the whole OnRoad Rally Championship that has ethroughout the year and also qualif

travel money and prizes. With Mbecoming rally affiliated those memwho choose the rally support option caapply for regional and national perforrally licences and compete in Canperformance rallies as MCO memMCO currently has one member Ottawa who is competing in regperformance rallies but as we arecurrently rally affiliated he andnavigator are members of another cluis rally affiliated and compete as meof that club. A couple of MCO memlast winter joined other Ontario moto

clubs so that they could qualifychampionships, prizes and travel monroad rallying. Hopefully, these memwill choose to remain part of our clubwe are rally affiliated in 2001. And aopportunity for growth, should Mmembers wish to organize rallies our can end up being part of Ontario series

The Highland Rally by Jaak Laan

Editors' Note: this article is a little latedue to our, um, confusion. We offer our most sincere apologies to Jaak and to thereaders for this oversight.

At the time of this writing, in earlyAugust, we have 4 teams signed upalready for the Highland Rally, which willbe happening Saturday, October 21starting in Almonte.

Remember, all you need to participate is awatch, a pen, a simple calculator formultiplying simple things like 7.6 km X1.02 odometer correction factor (example, not the factor you will use!), and a

navigator with whom you want to spendan afternoon on country roads under theFall colours. Oh yeah, the more fun yourcar is to drive the more fun you'll have. If you ever get lost you'll just have toexercise that car as you get back oncourse! "Oh darn, my navigator just toldme to speed up!"

The directions will be simple, becausewe're trying to encourage people to tryTSD (time speed distance) rallying as agrassroots alternative to what we watchon TV or read about in magazines.

The calculations required are onlyrequired because every car's odometermeasures differently. You want to matchyour readings to the instructions (setusing the rallymaster's car) so you knowfor sure that when it says "bear right" (no,that's not a reference towildlifealthough it could be) at 4.6km, you turn right at the correct road. There could be another road 0.1 km over

the crest which might be the correct one(see above re. seeing the bright side andenjoying your car when getting un-lost).

The "odo check" is always within the first15 km of the start. You zero your tripmeter at the start line. You followdirections (which are always intentionallysimple) before the odo check, and when itsays "odo check" in the instructions youstop exactly there and note what your

odometer reading. You then compare itto the instructions, and calculate yourcorrection factor that you will use forevery instruction for the rest of the rally. We will explain how to do this during thepre-event seminar. This is the onlycalculation required, but it is CRITICALor you WILL get lost. You just keepingmultiplying every distance reading in theinstructions by this correction factor. Youalso work ahead so you're not scramblingwhen the turns are close.

The Highland Rally is designed forpeople who have never done this before,so we will not be trying to trick you inany way. You still will have to payattention to the navigation and go throughall the usual steps. You still will have tofollow your navigator's instructions withgood humour. You may still have toforgive your navigator for errors and bepatient as they figure out where they wentwrong. And hopefully your navigatorwill not have to forgive you for anydriving errors.

    The Vice-President Report

    By Ron Woltman

Back at the word processor after a wee

lay off. I hope you missed me?Couple of things to speak to thismonth.

First, and most important -- THEELECTIONS! Now is the time for allgood men to come to the aid of theparty. In other words, let's stand upand be counted. Stand for election. Itwill be the best of times. Yes, it maybe the worst of times, too, but you will

feel involved. I am standing again,God willing. Who will stand with me?

MCO had a rally this past month, organized by long-time member Dave

Butler. While the weather wasatrocious, the entries were good andeveryone had fun, including yourstruly, who acted as a checkpoint. And, I did not get lost. If you read

early Links you will find I got lost inmy very first rally. However, manyof the novice rallyists from the high-tech firm of LEARNIX did. Methinksthe rally was trifle too difficult. Nexttime - go easy on the beginners sothey will come back.

Just finished running the EVCCELECTROTHON at Paul Swinwood'sQuyon go-kart track. Only four

entries, unfortunately, and only twostarters. One more joined the fray with20 minutes left in the one-hour event. But, everyone had fun - we had a 'dice'for the leadsort of a tortoise and

hare kind of thing. The tortoise by the way.(see photos below - Ed)Much thanks to Bob McLeod (oex-member), Sam Mandia, RicMuise and Dave Butler (albeit a

tardy himself). We are going to dagain next June at Capital CSpeedway. If you have participated -- do so - it's way co

Remember --- get involved and sfor office. It's your club.

Above:This was the winner of theEVCC. A well made, sleekthree-wheeler, it won the race, despite being lapped repeatedlyduring the first half of the race.Style-wise, it was reminiscent ofthe rocket-powered BonnevilleSalt Flats record holders.

Below:This was the second placeentry. It started very strongly,

lapping vehicle #46 roughlyevery 4 laps, but it ran ot of juice about mid-way throughthe event. A number of driverchanges didn't seem to help. This dark blue electric beastseems to echo the lines of theSilk-Cut Jaguars at Le Mans.

    Solo-I by Jaak Laan

Six MCO members participated in theAugust 7 and 8 Solo I events at the ex-Transport Canada test facility now run byPMG Technologies at Blainville, just

north of Montreal. Results, generalinformation and even maps to get thereare at www.soloontario.com . PMG'swebsite with photos is athttp://www.pmgtest.com/. This eventwas supposed to have been held at theSte. Eustache track, but Blainville workedout well, at least for novices like me. Ihad never been there, and the speeds werepretty high - which meant the opportunityto learn heavier braking from higherspeeds.

The track was laid out beginning withcones on the huge paved test area, andthen streaked slightly downhill (I think Iwas doing about 140 km/h) on a straighttowards an almost 180 degree corner ontothe concrete straight. We were able to usemost of one straight of the 5.5 milebanked oval track. Runoff room at theend of the straight if you didn't make the180 degree turn was the banking(tempting!). I hit 170 km/h in my weestock Civic, and was still acceleratingbefore having to brake to about 20 km/hfor the corner. The track then scootedthrough a sea of cones, marking out someinteresting corners, back to the start/finishline. Grip is good on the whole track, perhaps because it is nice and flat and

clean. Despite being warned about it, Idid not experience extra tire wear. Thelong straight was concrete and wasactually rather surprisingly undulating. When I got it up to 170 km/h at the end itseemed to smooth out, but more likely Iwas just a tad distracted by picking mybraking point! I think it would be pretty

frightening to come off that 35 degreebanking in some fast car and whistledown those narrow straights. I am toldthat some character called Eddie Irvinehad some difficulty at this venue, scrapingthe side of an XJ-R on the guardrailduring a Jaguar press day at the time of the Canadian GP this year made merespect the place.

It is an interesting facility what with tightsecurity...we had to be escorted 2 km in toour paddock five cars at a time etc.

Depending on how you drive, it is about1.5 to 1.75 hours from Ottawa. TheL.A.P.S. (l'Association des Pilotes Solo)people who ran the event for the inter-provincial gang were very nice folk andseemed to be well organized. After thefirst run they used their computer to slotpeople into a run order with fastest goingfirst. Then they used the huge openpaddock area to line us up in side by siderows of five cars each. Each five car rowwent out on the track together.

While most of the real race cars fromOntario didn't make the trip, the field wasbrightened up by a new black Corvettewhich arrived on a black trailer pulled bya black ML55 Mercedes sport ute. That

Corvette just accelerated like wild fire. But I probably had as much fun on 2% of his budget!

Perhaps most unusually there were Ibelieve 5 brightly coloured T-Rex trikes. These things cost something like $38,000and have mid engined Kawasaki bike

motors (163 hp for 900 lbs.) with 6 spd.sequential transmissions and very openbodys. Your legs go over the opensuspension pieces and you can see groundaround your knees. Huge single rearwheels (315 width) which they keptsmoking off the line. Scary creatures. They are street legal in Quebec but I don'tthink I would want to be passing a semi-trailer truck on the inside with one of these things looking up at the truck'swhirling hubs. Would be fun to try on atrack though. T-Rex site at

    http://www.go-t-rex.com/

Having done the Solo I driving school, alapping day and two Solo I events thisyear to try it out I can recommend it toothers. It is a great opportunity to driveon race tracks at the lowest cost. Thesepeople are very good drivers with somepretty hot cars but everybody seems to betreated the samewe're all there to race.I used my stock old Civic on worn streettires and I was as welcomed as anybody.I'll be back for more!

The F1600 Series by Pier Bortot

I must say, the last event in the Formula1600 series championship was a blast. This was the sixth and last event for theF1600 championship season. The tworaces that complete the series were held at

Mosport (definitely my favorite track, now). Before going into this racingweekend, I was fourth in the F1600 B-class standing. A second and third placefinishes in the first and second racerespectively gave me a second place finalstanding in the championship. Great work from the entire team paid-off. The car set-up was superb; It allowed me toexperience some interesting "four wheelsdrift" in some of the most notoriouscorners, namely 2 and 4.

In the first race, a fierce battle developedvery quickly between myself and Jeff McGibbon from Toronto. We changedposition on every lap between corners 5and 8. By lap 12, I decided to put somedistance between my faithful #151VanDiemen and Jeff's Lola thus finishingsecond.

In the second race, I quickly moved awaywith a pack of four and started tochallenge Mike Lee (the current leader inthe B-class championship). After severalfailed attempts to pass his Lola, I had tosettle for third place.

The US GP, Sept 2000 by Richard Muise

Formula-1 competition returned to thiscontinent for a second time this year forthe 2000 US GrandPrix at theIndianapolis Motor Speedway.

The trip down (through Toronto andDetroit) took about 15 hours, and wearrived in the construction zonesurrounding Indianapolis during theFriday 5 o'clock rush hour. That night wewent drove around downtownIndianapolis looking for food, but insteadfound Ferraris, which was more to ourtaste. The Ferrari club had a display of street Ferraris in a downtown square, including some of the older models fromthe 1950's, right through the latest 550,360s, and my favorite - two F40's. Soonenough the length of the trip caught upwith us, and we made for the hotel, whichwas about an hour south of Indy.Saturday we left for the track early, notreally knowing how long it would take tofind parking. We arrived at the track during the morning practice. I personallywas not expecting the track to be quite soenormous. Television does not giveenough sense of scale to truly display thetrack as it appears to someone in thestands. The straights are a kilometer long,

but it doesn't really hit home until you seehow small the cars appear from thatdistance, barely seeming to move, despitereaching almost 220mph. From our seatson the north end of the track, we could

barely make out the south-end grandstands. And to walk around the entire course is a long, long hike.

The qualifying was interesting, with McLarenusing a high-speed draft from M ika to catapultDC into second place on the grid. But it wasall Schumacher's weekend, starting with

winning the pole position. The crowd, both atthe track, and on the local news reports, wherevery much behind M ichael.

Later Saturday was a Porsche Pirella Supercuprace, the first of the two scheduled during theweekend. This was the first race on the newcourse. Mario Andretti and Little Al drove, butwere not very competitive (they were notrunning for points, and were really justcelebrity drivers for the race).

Again Sunday we left for the track very early,

trying to get there when some parking was stillavailable. We parked on a front lawn about 6blocks from the track. Most of thehomeowners around the IMS track rent out

their yard for parking, about $15 to $40 perday. I imagine from the air, you wouldn't beable to see any grass for at least a mile aroundthe track. Sunday had terrible weather, neverquite raining, but constantly cold and damp, and I wondered what was the record for thecoldest F1 race. The stands, being at apermanent facility, had more room than thetemporary stands at the Toronto Molson Indy. But 8 hours is a long time to be sitting in anystands.

There were two races Sunday morning, thesecond Porsche Pirelli Supercup race, and theFerrari Challenge. Both races provided somegood racing, the wet weather accounting for afew drivers missing their lines. The Ferrarirace was entirely amateurs, in the sense thatthere was no prize money, and most of thedrivers owned the car they drove. Some went

home with some expensive damage to repair

About an hour before the F1 race started wasthe drivers' parade. Michael easily got themost fanfare, but interestingly both Jacquesand DC were a close second and third, followed by a smattering of applause for thecurrent champion Mika.

Our seats were at the far north end of the track, and we could watch everything from the endof the front straight through turn-6 of the 13-turn course. If we had had seats another 150

feet to our right (closer to the first turn), Ithink we would have been able to see the backstraight and turn 7 as well.

The race itself was lots of fun. For those that have not had the pleasure of attendinMontreal GP, F1 races are painfully loudyou need ear protection! Michael had arace, winning from the pole. But for mbest racing was the dice between JacqueHeinz-Harold Frentzen. Jacques almost

podium finish, but was not able to comand hold the pass for third place, and wathan a second adrift at the checkered flag.

I'm looking forward to going again. I didan opportunity to see the IMS museum, think I'll try for different seats closer ttrack. And I'm definitely going back foIndy500 in the coming years.
