    Editorial Exhaust

I have a new addiction. Just got back from

    the Performance Lapping school at

Shannonville Motorsport Park, and in the

four days since, I'm already trying to find a

way of skipping work to feed this

    addiction.

This was my first time on track, and I

wasn't sure quite what to expect. The

drizzle on Saturday didn't help, as my

Kuhmo's were all but slicks. But the

afternoon cleared up, and Sunday turned

    into a perfect day.

A very big thank you is extended to the

Bob Armstrong as chief instructor (and

    encourager), all the instructors, Ron

Woltman for organization, and CindyArmstrong and her band of course workers

who gave their time to put on this fabulous

    event.

The event started Friday afternoon with

    registration and scrutineering opening

Saturday's rain dampened only the track

    not the spirits.

I'll have a longer report for the weekend in

the August issue. The MCO web site has

already been updated with photos from the

    event; go see them!

    CASCAR RaceReport

    by Jim Holtom

The large crowd on hand for the CAS-CAR race at the legendary Mosport racecircuit was treated to a spirited battle in

the Canada GT Challenge Cup. In the end,Brent Gates in his Stealth B6, overcame arace-long challenge from Jim Holtom inhis SCADAPack Corvette. Charles Web-ster finished third in his Camaro, andKlaus Bytzek finished fourth in his Por-sche 911 GT1 EVO. Mark Swain capturedfifth in his Ultima.

Sunday dawned with clear blue skies andthe promise of a perfect June day forround five of the Canada GT ChallengeCup. When the Canadian flag was wavedto start the race, Gates immediately tookthe lead, followed by Holtom, Bytzek,

Webster and Jim Beaton. Over the courseof the next five laps, he opened up a gapof a few seconds, when Holtom suddenlyentered the pits. "I was concerned aboutthe motor", said Holtom. "It was runninghotter than normal, and I just couldn'tkeep up with Brent, so we decided to takeour pit stop earlier than normal. When Ireturned to the race, our track positionwas identical to that of just before thestop. We were directly behind Brent, butone lap down.

Then when the first full course cautionhappened, I thought the gods might besmiling upon us. Brent's lead disappeared

and we were once again on his tail. Itbecame obvious that pit stop timing andstrategy was going to play a major role inthe outcome".

After the cause of the full course cautionwas cleaned up (Bentley Hammer'sCamaro had spun and contacted the wallbetween Corners 9 and 10), the racerestarted and once again Brent Gatespulled out a small lead over Holtom. Hethen dashed into the pits for his mandatoryone-minute pit stop, with Holtom inherit-ing the lead. But when Gates returned tothe race, his car was behind Holtom's. "I

don't know what happened, but for somereason our pit stop was just a few secondslonger than Jim's, which was all it took togive him the lead", said Brent after therace.

I smiled when I saw that darn Stealthbehind me on the track. I knew it wouldbe tough keeping him there, but at leastwe had a chance. Sure enough, he keptworking his way closer and closer, untilall of a sudden there was a huge crashinvolving Brad Flower's Porsche in Cor-ner One. With Brent filling my mirrors, I

had to thread my way through the debris, and then do creative driving to keep theStealth behind. Under ASN Canada FIArules, overtaking is allowed immediatelyafter passing a yellow flag incident. Thisgives a big advantage to the overtakingcar, because the leading driver has to slowdown, find the hole through the debris, and yet keep up sufficient speed that the

    following car can't slingshot past.

"Brent tried to pass me going up the Mar-io Andretti straight, but a lapped car got inthe way. I was praying for the full coursecaution that I knew would come, but onceagain we had to battle through the crashzone at Corner One. When we camearound Corner 5B to go up the straight, Iknew my only hope was the full coursecaution. Brent was too close behind meand there were no cars to create traffic.Sure enough, he motored past me usingthe superior straight-line speed of theStealth. Then to add insult, the full course

caution happened about one second afterhe passed me. I knew at that point that wehad lost the race".

But the excitement wasn't over for thefans. Brad Flower's Porsche was removedfrom Corner One, but the protective tiresagainst the concrete wall were too badlyscattered to be replaced in time for therace to finish. The officials decided to dis-play a stationary yellow flag at CornerOne to prohibit any overtaking attempts. When the race restarted, Holtom pursuedGates, but by the time the pair arrived atCorner 3, a red flag was displayed and therace was over. A huge, multi-car crashhad happened on the start finish straight,

starting with Gunter Schmidt's Volkswa-gen Beetle spinning at the exit of Corner10. Mike Palladino's Corvette hit Gunter'sBeetle. Meanwhile, Charles Webster whowas running in third position a few carsback, had Klaus Bytzek glued to his rearbumper, and Jim Harrison in the front.Charlie wanted to keep his podium posi-tion, and was hard on the gas coming

around Corner 10. Jim Harrison checkedup to avoid the Schmidt/Palladino inci-dent, and was heavily rear-ended byCharles, who was then heavily rear-endedby Klaus Bytzek. Charles kept going tocross the finish line, knowing that hissteering was knocked askew, but unawarethat his brake line had been severed. HisCamaro came to a rest against the tires atCorner One, fortunately missing the bareconcrete wall section created earlier byBrad Flowers' Porsche.

With car parts and pieces scattered allover the start finish straight and down into

Corner One, the officials wisely displayedthe red flag, and the battle was over. BrentGates had won his first race of 2001 in theStealth B6. The ecstatic but exhaustedGates could hardly contain his excitementover the victory. Holtom was pleased withthe outcome. Charles Webster stayed withhis wounded Camaro and missed the podi-um presentation, but in the true spirit ofthe Canada GT Challenge Cup, his bottleof ice cold Bacardi Martini Asti was savedfor him.

The Feature was a great racebetween the North Gower Driversas Steve Yendall, Matt Moffitt andKen Baird swapped positions andpaint as these top drivers, all from

    Tracy KartingDriver Graham Hine

    Notches UpImpressive Results

    By Jeff Watson

SKUSA Florida Winter Tour ChampionSince being crowned SKUSA FloridaWinter Tour Champion in Jacksonville onApril 23rd, Paul Tracy KartingInternational [PTKI] driver Graham Hineof Almonte, Ontario continues to impress.

SKUSA Pro Moto TourIn his first SKUSA Pro Moto Tour eventon April 29th, Graham challenged the bestin North America and finished fourth inthe final, despite being down onhorsepower on the long Jacksonvillestraights.

Next stop is the Canadian leg of the ProMoto Tour in the streets of Barrie ON,which runs in late June. Graham isdetermined to win this one too. He justneeds his engine to be healthy on the day.

SKUSA Regional RacesGraham had an easy win at the SKUSALiberty Region race on May 13th at SaintLawrence Motor Sports Park and thenwon the SKUSA Ontario Region MosportGrand Prix in fine style on May 27th.

Adequate sponsorship is critical.Graham's schedule for the rest of the 2001

season will depend on how muchsponsorship he can attract. The plan is todo well in Barrie to qualify for the WorldChampionship in Oklahoma on September20-23rd and to win the SKUSA OntarioChampionship.

"Getting more sponsorship is job numberone for us now," said Colin Hine, ownerof PTK Racing. "We have been fortunateto have sponsorship from Luc Romanicaat Aylmer Saturn, but we will need muchmore to mount an effective challenge inthe SKUSA competitions. It would be ashame if Graham has to curtail his

    ambitions for lack of money".

Another priority is to partner with a topnotch engine tuner," said Colin. "We havetalked to a number of people and we hopeto make a decision soon. Graham just hasto have the horsepower and the reliabilityif he is to be on a level playing field withthe heavily funded Americans".

Quick and ControlledGraham has already proved himself as adriver to be reckoned with and more thana few heads were turned at the Mosport

Grand Prix. Toronto based karters hadnever heard of Graham and it surprisedthem to see how quick and controlled hewas. In practice at Mosport, Graham wasleaving a number of 125cc shifters in hisdust! Three years of practice on the localtight tracks made Graham a master of theapexes. In Jacksonville it was only on thelong straights where his competition wasable to out drag him.

For more information on Graham'sprogress, contact Jeff Watson at:PTK Racing - Publicity(613) 721-6263 - Phone; 726-2945 - FaxEmail: [email protected]

    The Totally SillyDrive

    by Jim Morrow

On June 9, the MCO Rally Group kicked

off their 2001 rally season with a school, followed by an evening rally that ran for132 km.

Twelve students attended the classroomsession, during which we reviewed therules and regulations, safety considera-tions, checkpoint protocols, and the basicsof drivex navigation and timing. Severalworkers brought their rally-equipped vehi-cles, including the noisy black Impreza2.5RS. We demonstrated lights, rallycomputers and the various paraphernaliathat every rally team needs to get the jobdone.

Registration for the rally began at 7:15p.m. at the Harvey's on Carling Avenue, with a drivers' meeting at 7:45 p.m. Themythical Car 0 left at 8:00 p.m., en routeto 10 checkpoints. As befits a rallydesigned for beginners, roads and instruc-tions were designed to be simple, with anoccasional main-road navigation thrownin to test the teams' understanding.

Eight teams registered; of those, one wasfrom Quebec and five teams were first-

timers - as were most of the marshalsdoing checkpoint duty.

The participants said they enjoyed them-selves and wanted to know when theMCO was planning the next rally. Severalnewcomers offered to help organizerswith upcoming events.

Overall, we made a great advance forbuilding an interest in rallying and bring-ing it back to Ottawa.Stay tuned: we are aiming for a slightlymore complex rally in late July or earlyAugust. If you're interested in working onperformance rallies and getting up closeand personal with the big dogs, contactme and I'll connect you up with the appro-priate people.

    Until next month....

    The President'sReport

Your humble servant is scribbling thispiece on the 'eve', so to speak, of our big-gest event of the year. I speak, of course,of the Canaska Cup, and the endless finaldetails (more next LINK).

But we just concluded a most successful

two-day Advanced Driving School week-end. The feedback has been for the mostpart positive and rewarding. I feel, and Ithink I echo the feeling of most everyoneinvolved, the weekend was one of themost successful Driving/Lapping eventsever. There were errors and omissions -easily corrected for the future - but some

80 individuals left SMP as better drivers. That is comforting.

There are many people to thank. All ofthe instructors, who gave so willingly oftheir time, experience patience and goodhumour. Book Reviewby Rob Microys

    Competition Car Suspension:Design, Construction, Tuning

    by Allan Staniforth

This book has been written in a very easyto read style. Provides great insight onpast and current suspension designs usedin competition cars from the production-racing sedan, to IMSA GTP, Lemans Pro-totypes and Formula 1 racecars. Thebook is very progressive in nature startingwith the most fundamental topics, cover-ing the different types of technology usedin racing cars throughout the history ofMan's fascination about cars and drivingfast. The first half of the book concen-trates on the various types of suspensionarchitectures, technologies, geometries, springs, shocks, swaybars, bump rubbers,

and methods of making a car handle -even going in to detail on Lotus' Activesuspension which was the first of theamazing high-tech Formula 1 suspensionsystems to hit the scene.

The remainder of the book gets techni-cal, detailing shocks and springs withgood detail - and also recommends addi-tional reading for those people who reallywant to get in to the nitty gritty of shocktechnology and understanding racing sus-pensions. The book is quite current, being published in 1999. It details manymanufacturers' racing shocks, including

racing Koni and Penske shocks. Thebook goes so far as to provide one with adetailed set of mathematical formulae tohelp calculate just about every suspensionparameter you could imagine, wheelrates, spring rates, weight transfer, allbased on the corner weights of the carand a few basic parameters which arechosen such as the harmonic rate of yourfront and rear suspension. If for any oth-er purpose, I would recommend readingthis book to understand weight transfer,

as this book really does a great job de-mystifying this very misunderstood topic. This is a great educational book, as wellas an excellent reference on suspensiondesign. The best I have read yet.

As a club racer building a car, I havefound many 'tid-bits' of information out

there in all sorts of other books which areneeded to choose components and designa suspension properly. This book hasalmost all of that information in it, all inone place. It provides enough detail tohelp chose the proper components includ-ing the requiredmathematics to helpchose effectivespring rates based onthe car & design ofits suspension.

This is a worthyaddition to any-

body's motor sportslibrary regardless ifyou are simply atechnically inclinedspectator, a crew-member, a team own-er or driver.

Beyond what thebook has, I wouldalso recommendreading some of thetechnical documenta-tion on Penskeshocks a t

    http://www.penske-shocks.com/. You'llbe amazed at thetechnology in a rac-ing shock these days.Happy reading!
