Staying one step ahead of your needs by investing in customer facing-IT, our network

and technologies that support the speed and reliability of our services

Investing inyour future

Improving our services is a constant priority. Both our domestic and international divisions have benefited from the significant

investments we made last year in the way we carry your shipments. In 2015, our efforts and investments have continued.

SWINDON SUPER-DEPOTAcknowledging that speed to market is essential for successful businesses, we have opened a new multi-million pound facility in Swindon, which combines both depot and hub operations. The new super-depot has created greater capacity within our network – meaning faster deliveries for customers.

The new 10-acre site on the South Marston Industrial Estate, became operational in early August. It includes a new state-of-the-art sorting machine and more than 100 loading bays for both long-haul and Pickup and Delivery vehicles (PUD). Simon Harper, Director of Operations TNT UK (Domestic), said:

“Coupled with our multi-million pound investment in our fleet of vehicles, Swindon will enable us to cut delivery times, improve our service and our capacity for growth into next year and beyond.”

Keeping local parcel traffic in the South West will also mean fewer vehicles on already congested roads and motorways. We estimate our long-haul lorries will reduce mileage by nearly 690,000 miles (1.1 million km), which, in turn, will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 815,000 kg each year, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.

TNT’S NEW FLEETTNT UK has continued to invest millions of pounds into upgrading our fleet with more than 300 new long-haul trailers, 200 new tractor units, 330 new pick-up and delivery trucks and more than 85 new sprinter vans.

The upgrade is part of our strategy to improve services for customers and drive operational efficiency.

Welcome

We’re able to deliver our high quality services to you, our customers, thanks to the hard work and commitment of every employee across The People Network.

As a Loading Bay Operative in one of our busiest depots at Kingsbury, I can see the increasing volumes of parcels and freight going through our network.

All this points to greater confidence in TNT from our customers. Everyone continually strives to deliver the perfect transaction to each of our customers.

In this first issue of Link – your new customer magazine – you can learn about the many different services we offer. For example: l We can deliver – safely, efficiently

and on-time – such priceless cargo as a T.rex skull.

l We deliver vital blood to hospitals around the country.

l We have a whole team which specialises in event logistics such as the Virgin London Marathon and the London to Brighton Bike Ride.

l If you want to save space, reduce costs and store documents securely so that they are available on demand – either electronically or as hard copies – we have a whole division dedicated to doing just that.We never rest on our laurels and we

are investing heavily in our network to even better serve your needs.

It’s all great for our business and yours and it’s how we, at TNT, are helping to keep the wheels of business turning. I hope you enjoy reading Link.

“We are expanding and upgrading our fleet to increase our capacity and provide even better services for our customers, offering them increased flexibility and reliability and ensuring we can continue to consistently deliver the high standards of service for which we are proud to be known,” said Domestic Managing Director Marianne Culver. “All of this while improving our carbon footprint which is obviously good news for our customers and the communities in which we work. This is a responsibility we take very seriously.”

In upgrading our fleet, we have also ensured we are backing British industry with new trailers already rolling off the UK production lines at Cartwright and Tiger – two of the UK’s leading commercial vehicle body and trailer manufacturers.

INVESTMENT IN ITWe are transforming our IT to provide a more responsive and coordinated approach to better support services to customers. This includes not only sophisticated technology but also the

ways in which we work.Three partners have been selected

to provide Outsourced IT services, these are Verizon for Voice & Data, HP for Data Centres and Infosys for Applications Development and Maintenance.

Our sales teams now have more facts at their fingertips to help customers thanks to a new app launched in January.

The Priority Verticals App brings together useful market information about our key vertical markets – Healthcare, Automotive, Industrial, High Tech and Lifestyle, through which valuable business information and insight can be stored and shared.

NO TO DAMAGEOur people are committed to ensuring your deliveries arrive in perfect condition. So we have introduced a No to Damage campaign, whereby The People Network treats every package as if it was our own and ensures it is not damaged in transit. We will also work closely with our customers to ensure when we collect the item it is in pristine condition.

NEW DEPOTSCustomers delivering into central London are benefiting from faster and improved services, after we opened a new London City Depot in early June.

As well as providing a long term base for our operations in central London, the new depot means we can get PUD vehicles on the road even earlier each morning, providing extra capacity for

the ever increasing demands from all over the UK for premium-timed deliveries into central London.

And a new depot in Howden is improving delivery times for businesses across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Humberside and the North East of England. Based on the Ozone Park trading estate, Howden depot handles up to 25,000 items each week within a 30-mile radius of TNT’s other depots. This operation now puts local businesses within easy reach of an extensive road network including the M62, M18, M1 and A1 motorways.

NEW EQUIPMENT Many of our depots are also receiving new equipment to improve efficiencies, such as Reversible In-line Conveyor Systems.

We are expanding and upgrading our

fleet to increase our capacity and

provide even better services for

our customers.

Delivering overseas growth

With over 580,000 new businesses having launched in 2014, it was a particularly strong year

for the emergence of small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). In 2015, many of these new businesses are taking advantage of the great demand for quality British products across the world and are opting to export their goods to overseas markets. When taking advantage of the opportunities new markets can bring, businesses need to be aware of several issues.

Small and medium-sized businesses continue to help drive the UK out of the recession. They are growing in number and they are a growing force of both traditional and online trading

managing extended payment terms and maintaining a healthy cash flow. It’s important that SMEs understand these challenges and know that there is support out there.

What are the rewards of exporting? There are plenty of benefits for those who export. Research recently published by the British Chambers of Commerce highlighted that the majority of exporting firms reported an increase in sales over the past 12 months and a third of exporters had to expand their production capacity to cope with demand from international markets.

What help and advice is on offer? There is a wealth of exporting advice available to SMEs. Other businesses who already export internationally can support the transition from a domestic to an international operation. Businesses you know who have been exporting for a

few years will be well placed to offer advice. Websites such as Export

Britain share great case studies from firms who are exporting successfully. Exporting is so essential to the recovery of the UK economy that the UK

What are the challenges faced by SMEs who export?Exporting goods is a great way for SMEs to develop and grow their business and can bring with it many benefits. However many are unsure how to approach it. Researching potential new markets and

opportunities requires additional planning and resources for the

business involved, which all needs to be done in addition to the day job. Many small business owners shy away from exporting at first because of the perceived costs of getting started, uncertainty

over how to access new markets or because the export registration

process seems too complex to navigate on their own.

Careful forward planning and taking advantage of the exporting resources on offer can ensure that SMEs have a greater understanding of market conditions elsewhere. The greatest challenge for many SMEs in moving from a national to an international operation is dealing with the cultural, legal and language barriers,

How you benefit from our new focus

Government set a target in 2012 to double UK exports to £1 trillion by 2020 and get 100,000 more UK companies exporting by 2020. There are a number of government initiatives including the UK Trade and Investment’s Passport to Export service which launched in 2014 as an export assessment and support programme for SMEs. It provides new or inexperienced exporters with training and support to grow their business overseas and is delivered by UKTI’s regional International Trade Teams.

Exporters are assigned local UKTI trade experts who provide support over 12 months, including an action plan for export activity, workshops on the stages of exporting and help with market research into the target market.

The Institute of Export launched their Open to Export website in 2014 to provide SMEs with an online community where they can talk to like-minded businesses and experts. The programme is supported by the UKTI and the Federation of Small Businesses.

Events such as Going Global, which takes place in May and November each year, are also great for networking with experts who are able to offer valuable insight on how to expand internationally.

How can TNT help? “TNT understands the importance of this growing market and now has a team of experts from across its People Network which is dedicated to supporting SMEs with their international shipping requirements,” explains International Sales Director Adrian Watts. “TNT can help SMEs grow by providing a range of products and services that are designed specifically for international markets. For example, our full Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status enables us to fast-track shipments through customs.”

With internationally focused sales centres across the UK our team of experts are never far away and are able to give customers the right advice and solutions to make sure their account runs smoothly. We also offer a first call resolution service from our dedicated international customer service agents providing direct access to our dedicated support teams who are experts in international shipping.

TNT developed new dedicated domestic and international support teams, each with the specific expertise, industry knowledge and resources to help you. Creating two dedicated teams in sales, customer services and marketing has enabled us to focus on enhanced levels of specialist domestic and international support. The excellent service remains unchanged. We continue to combine all collections and deliveries through our reliable single network of drivers, vehicles, planes and depots.

TNT NOW PROVIDES:l More flexible account managementl More focused services and products aimed specifically at domestic and/or international markets l Direct access to sales and customer service representatives with more relevant knowledge to deal with specific enquiries about domestic or international deliveriesl Greater opportunity for us to design services around specific UK markets and industries at home and abroadl The assurance of dealing with a world class service provider.

AUTUMN 20156

We moved T.rex

W e’re more than just a parcel carrier and, sometimes, we’re called into action to

ship very unusual items such as a giant dinosaur skull.

The very special cargo was transported from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in South Dakota, in the United States, to the Fraunhofer EZRT research institute in Fuerth, Germany.

Owned by the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre (Netherlands), the well-preserved skull belongs to a 66 million-year-old female T.rex excavated in Montana in 2013 and acquired by Naturalis in 2014.

The fragile skull was carefully delivered to Fraunhofer EZRT in Fuerth,

where the fossil underwent a high-resolution CT scan, designed to provide detailed 3D x-ray images of its structure for a research presentation by the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre.

The 690 kilo skull made the 7,800 km journey from the United States in a 1.90-metre long wooden crate, carefully prepared and sealed. We drove the skull over a distance of 2,785 km from South Dakota to JFK Airport in New York, flew it to our air hub in Liège using a Boeing 747 aircraft, and then trucked it to Fuerth.

Regular status updates were provided to the customer throughout the journey. On the way back the skull made a stopover in Amsterdam for a national TV show. We used a specially-

Grant Cochrane, Global Special Services Director, TNT, said: “We are proud to have assisted the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in bringing a rare T.rex skeleton to Europe. When Westco needed to improve its efficiency to avoid losing business to competitors,

it turned to TNT for a solution to guarantee deliveries when and where they were needed.

Westco provides merchants, plumbers and heating installers with products to service every job from commercial premises to domestic households, providing a nationwide distribution service.

“Our previous supplier offered a £40,000 saving when TNT pitched but I wanted something new,” said Westco Managing Director, Nick Horton.

“When deliveries weren’t made properly, our people were purely

chasing claims. Now it’s much more efficient. It has been really successful and we have sales people selling rather than chasing lost items.”

TNT provides a next day, pre-noon, delivery option to Westco that is proving very successful

with on-time deliveries reaching record levels of 95+ per cent.

“We no longer get customers calling up and asking where their shipment is. Previously, if parcels got lost, they were lost for good… six or seven in a day. Our customers are much happier now.

“We didn’t go out to get a faster service but we did get a faster service so we have retained customers.”

Such is the efficiency of TNT’s service, Westco’s Warehouse Manager Darren Mercer says his team’s challenge, now, is to pick and pack products quick enough to keep up!

Westco’s products are evolving as the business evolves and the company needs a sophisticated supply chain solution to match.

“We can now say to our customers that if they order it for before noon the next day, they’ll get it before noon the next day. TNT is delivering our orders on time,” added Nick.

“We have visibility and traceability of freight and we can give customers accurate advice. Eighty-two per cent of our deliveries are before 12 the next day so those people aren’t chasing us.

“Most of our products come in from the same suppliers across the world. Most of our competitors charge the same price or, if anything, we are a little bit dearer which means we have to beat them on service.

“TNT has invested in the technologies to allow us to do it.”

are much happier now.”

TNT FINDS CURE TO CELESIO HEADACHE

C elesio, the leading national pharmaceutical distributor, with the largest community

pharmacy network, is delivering vital drugs and medications quickly and efficiently to patients across the UK with the help of TNT.

Coventry-based Celesio, the parent company of well-known brands Lloyds Pharmacy, AAH Pharmaceuticals and DrThom, signed a rolling contract with TNT.

Following a review, Celesio established a need to improve its service with a more consolidated and efficient logistics solution.

B ritain’s newest bank is delivering tangible benefits to its customers by outsourcing its internal mail to

TNT Logistics Solutions.Metro Bank, the rapidly-expanding latest

addition to the sector (it is the first new bank on British High Streets in the past 100 years) uses TNT dedicated vehicles, to deliver internal mail, financial documents and stationery between the banks’ 35 branches – most of which lie within the M25 – and its central cheque clearing facility in Holborn, London.

Metro Bank has ambitious plans and hopes to increase to 200 branches across the UK in the next few years.

Joe Bakowski, Head of Procurement and Supplier Management at Metro Bank, said: “I hold up TNT as an example of a superb supplier. They are the epitome of what we

look for in a vendor and offer outstanding service – turning up on time, collecting our documents and doing it right. I couldn’t ask for a better performance and truly see them as an extension of our business.

“Metro Bank needs items picking up every day, and the Logistics Solutions team from TNT is great at providing this dependable service, leaving us free to focus on our core business which is serving the financial needs of our customers.”

TNT has worked closely with the bank to provide a tailored solution. Dedicated vehicles collect and deliver mail pouches overnight which means day-to-day business is not disrupted. Metro Bank benefits from the experience of TNT Express’ existing network, which serves many of the high street banks.

to help you meet the demands of your customers.

At The People Network we remain – individually and collectively – committed to ensuring you receive the best possible experience when dealing with TNT.

Earlier this year, it was announced that FedEx intended to acquire TNT for €4.4billion. Recently the European Commission announced it needed more time to investigate the proposal, but both TNT and FedEx remain confident of success.

The combination of both businesses will create a leading global player in the transportation and logistics industry, drawing on the considerable and complementary strengths of FedEx and TNT. • Access to a comprehensive portfolio of transportation solutions, such as express, economy, global freight forwarding, contract logistics and surface transportation capabilities

• Market leading customer interface technology

• Investments in service and innovation enabled by the combination’s strong balance sheet

making good progress and is on track for an anticipated completion in the first half of 2016. While the process is on-going we continue with our Outlook Strategy, which is already delivering significant benefits to you, our valued customers, and pressing ahead with plans to improve services for our customers.

Seeing is believingHow our people care for our local communities

TNT’s employees are a generous bunch – always quick to fundraise for our primary designated charity

Wooden Spoon.The long-standing relationship with

the children’s charity of rugby is well documented and nearly 19 years of fundraising has generated in excess of £3.5million.

Through TNT and Wooden Spoon’s Seeing is Believing projects, our people not only get to see where the money they raise is spent, they also take the opportunity to work alongside the young people who benefit from their efforts.

A team of TNT volunteers from Atherstone and Leicester recently visited Brooke School in Rugby, which has built and maintains a small farm with TNT funding.

Pupils – each with their own individual care needs – look after animals, grow crops and learn about animal husbandry.

“It is quite a magical moment to see the youngsters interact with the

animals,” said Arti Singh, a Customer Service Representative at our Lount Contact Centre.

Brooke School caters for 164 children aged between two and 19 years old. The farm provides not only a stimulating

sanctuary for the young students but also a valuable learning facility.

“They learn every aspect of life on a farm,” says Jacqui Day, Business Development Manager at the school. “It is a proper farm not just a petting zoo. The students have to care for the animals, feed them, collect eggs from the chickens and muck out the pens! We collect and sell fertiliser.

“We are very grateful to TNT and Spoon for the £10,000 we needed to create the farm.”

Jai Purewal, Head of Community Investment at Wooden Spoon, said: “It is thanks to TNT and the excellent fundraising its people do that we are able to support these projects.”

Brooke School has ambitious plans to extend its education services to a wider group of young people and intends to set up a facility for new-borns to two-year-olds and cater for young people aged up to 25-years-old.

AUTUMN 201514

T NT not only helps the Virgin London Marathon organisers keep the thousands of

runners fed and watered, we also enter a team every year in aid of our primary charity Wooden Spoon.

While the Events Logistics team starts preparing for the marathon the day after the last runner crosses the finish line, some of our employees start their training early too.

This year Daniel Vines, TNT UK Domestic Director of Sales, was part of the competing TNT team that raised more than £6,500.

Dan, Steve Brown, Craig Smith, Tom Martin, from our sales teams were joined by Thando Dube, from TNT France, Darren Newland, customer Samantha Brown, of Bristan, and policeman Iain Prideaux alongside 36,667 other runners.

Dan said: “As a runner, you really appreciate the work the Special Services Events Logistics team do in keeping us all well-watered during the race.

“It is rewarding just to cross the finish line but even more so knowing that TNT has played such a big part in such a big event and, at the end of the day, our charity Wooden Spoon, benefits so much from the efforts of everyone.”

TNT’s people are prolific when it comes to going the extra mile whether they are delivering on our

promises to customers or raising money for worthy causes.

While Wooden Spoon remains our primary designated charity, the business has raised some fantastic amounts for other charities including Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Support.

Last year alone our people raised more than £11,000 for both charities with the proceeds being split equally down the middle.

And, where we can, we like to get our customers involved too. This year, another collaboration sees a team of trekkers from The People Network and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) embark on a marathon march across the Peak District to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Neil Hall, National Operations Manager – TNT Special Services, and Graham Thomas, TNT Group Security, will be matched stride for stride by Paul Carter and Joanne Lishman, of the DWP Commercial Directorate, in covering 100km in 24 hours in the daunting Peak District Ultra Gold Challenge.

Neil, a veteran of walking, cycling and canoeing challenges for many years, said: “This is likely to be the toughest challenge we have done yet.

“We have completed the Lake District ‘3000’, River Deep Mountain High and the Cateran Yomp through Scotland last year but this is going to be a greater challenge. Because we have to cover 100km in 24 hours – or less! – we will be tackling some quite hostile conditions and walking during darkness.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with DWP and it is for a worthy cause. Cancer Research UK focuses on prevention rather than looking after people suffering from the illness.”

Joanne Lishman, added: “The lives of all team members have been touched in some way by cancer, the loss of either a close friend or relative, so this year we decided we wanted to try to help Cancer Research UK keep increasing the numbers of people surviving cancer.”

Over the years, the team has raised more than £20,000 for causes such as the Wooden Spoon, Help for Heroes and the Army Benevolent Fund.

A Just Giving page has been created for the team’s challenge and donations can be made online for Cancer Research at www.justgiving.com/TheExtraMile2015

Whether it’s a barge cruise inFrance or travels further afieldon an ocean-liner, the food is keyto making it a mouth-wateringexperience, writes Paul Newman

Those familiar with cruises know the staff on board can make or break the relaxing experience.

Amongst the unsung heroes are the chefs and these three have one extra level of skill: they carry out (or have carried out) their profession from a galley kitchen.

Todd English Chef on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2Despite the name, Todd English is actually an American chef who is based in Boston. He is the proprietor of an

upscale chain of Mediterranean-style restaurants called Olives, and with a list of accolades up his sleeve including National Rising Star Chef and Top 50 Tastemakers, he is guaranteed to deliver a quality dish. Amongst his specialties are seared yellow fin tuna and sea scallops with oxtail and risotto cake.

Luc Dessain Chef on La Renaissance of European WaterwaysHaving started his career at the age of 18 in a ski resort in the French Alps, English-born Luc Dessain is a passionate chef who has spent eight years refining his skills and specialises in authentic French cuisine.

He is often praised for his Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Derek McKight (inset) Chef on Allure of the Seas®Having worked in the cruise industry for over 30 years, Derek McKnight is truly seasoned in his profession. Arranging dinner for over 5,000 people every morning, afternoon and evening, the cooking skills of this Irish chef are hard to beat. He trained in Cork, Killarney and Stuttgart before joining

the cruise industry, and also owns a restaurant in Cork.
