Forget a box of Quality Street or a bunch of flowers from a petrol station forecourt, this year, do it properly and go all out for your mum. What better way to treat your mum than a full day of pampering. Let your mum unwind and truly relax with a spa day. Let her take the weight off for the day and put her feet up. She deserves to take a break from the usual chores for at least one day so why not switch roles – why not cook her dinner? If it’s a safer bet to stay out of the kitchen, then why not take her to her favourite restaurant for dinner or treat her to a girly long lunch. Either way it gives her the chance to don her glad rags and feel like a star. Does your mum have a favourite place to go? Perhaps she enjoys long walks over rolling country or, something a little less strenuous, a stroll around her favourite shopping village. Whatever or wherever it is, make a day of it and spend some

quality time together doing something that she loves. While you’re on your big day out, why not stop off and refuel with afternoon tea. A piping hot cup of tea accompanied by a mouthwatering scone smothered in rich cream will certainly go down a treat. If you want to get your mum an extra special gift to show her how much you care then nothing goes down better than jewellery. A lovely bracelet or a glistening pair of earrings is sure to do the trick. They will make her feel special and every time she wears them she will think of you. She’s cleaned up after you, washed and ironed your clothes and put tea on the table every night for years on end so why not give her a well deserved day off. UFC As the days start to get ever longer and the

Wintry weather bids us farewell for another year - well, it never really leaves us does it! - Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC are gearing up for a crucial couple of months to come. Both teams are in very strong positions in their respective leagues and must keep the momentum going to the end of the season to ensure they achieve their goals of promotion.

The 1st team have played 3 fixtures since the last issue and had 2 others postponed due the big freeze. They’ve been sitting at the top of the table for the majority of this season but are currently placed in 2nd place due to the postponements. A bonus points win from their game in hand will help them regain top spot.

Old Bedians were TC’s first scalp of the 3, a side that had beaten them away from home earlier in the season. The 1sts were looking for revenge and proved that the opposing match up was just a hiccup, with a convincing 43 - 6 win. Next came an away trip to Newton-le-Willows and the lads produced a dominating performance to win the game 0 - 56. The last game of the 3 was another away trip, to Crosby St Marys, a must win game if TC were going to stay in contention for the Championship title. The 1st team did the job and came away with the spoils, 10 - 37.The 1st team are in second place in RFU North Lancs 2 with a game in hand and 14 games played and 8 fixtures still left to play.

The 2nd team have played 4 games since the last issue and have managed to win 3 out of the 4 with just 1 loss. All 4 of the fixtures were home ties and the 3 wins came in succession.

Tyldesley were beaten 13 - 8, Bolton 38 - 14 and Carnforth well and truly dispatched 46 - 0. Their final game was a top of the table clash against league leaders Leigh. A win for TC wouldn’t have taken top spot but would have closed the gap to just a few points thus making the run in to the end of the season very interesting. The 2nds were beaten in a close game, 12 - 19 so need Leigh to slip up a few times if they are to win the league, however with Leigh winning every game this season, it would take something special.

The 2nds also sit in 2nd place, in the Raging Bull leagues, Division 5 North with 13 games played.Training times are 6.45pm - 8.30pm on Wednesdays at Thornton YMCA and games kick off at 2.15pm. ‘Diary of a local Councillor’

Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Monday: I had a meeting with the Council about the new street lights that are being installed in the alleyway between Idlewood Place and Sevenoaks Drive. Getting these lights installed has been my proudest achievement in politics so far as I was first told the land wasn’t adopted by the council so the area wouldn’t get any lights. I went away found out the area was adopted and as regular readers to this column will testify have lobbied the council and Eon to get them installed for the last 15 months and we are finally at the point of delivery. It’s a good example in politics that whilst it may take time if you persevere you can get the job done.

Tuesday: I met up with two residents today about the amount of dog mess that is on Seabrook Drive and Rockville Avenue. The vast majority of dog owners are brilliant and are being let down by a small minority who aren’t picking up after their dogs. If you see anyone not picking up their dogs mess, don’t confront them, just make a mental note of what they look like and the time and place of the incident and call me on 01253 826679. We won’t let a small number of people ruin our area.

Wednesday: In the morning I called the bingo at our bingo club at St Teresa’s Church Hall. If you want a friendly place to meet new people then please do come along you will be very welcome. It starts at 10.30am every Wednesday. On the way back I went to check on the new bus shelter that has been installed on Fleetwood Road that Councillor Williams and myself have organised. This is the third bus shelter we have installed in the last 12 months and I’m determined to get as many as possible in Anchorsholme as I’ve spent a lot of time getting soaked at bus stops over the years and know what a horrible experience it is.

In the evening we had the bi monthly full council debate where all the Blackpool councillors meet and discuss issues facing the town. In the meeting I was delighted to vote for a measure that will see Blackpool Council bidding for funds in 2015/16 to extend the tramway up Talbot Road (if I had my way we would be bidding sooner but the body we will bid bidding from will not be in place until 2015/16. The Council meetings are always lively places and if anyone has access to the Internet they are broadcast live, just go to www.blackpool.gov.uk and the link is on their page. The meetings start at 6pm and finish around 9.30pm

Thursday: In the morning I worked on my recruitment business. In the afternoon I had a call that the 20 trees we have ordered are going to be planted in the next two weeks along the grass verges of Anchorsholme Lane East (the trees are free and are part of a recycling programme (the more we recycle the more trees we get). I love trees and am a big believer that trees and plants send out a strong signal that an area is loved and on the up. In the evening I had the pleasure of showing a group of Brownies around the Town Hall. They also had the chance to meet the Mayor. The Brownies really enjoyed the visit and were full of questions and comments, and were perfectly behaved (a lot of politicians could learn a lot from them).

Friday: Today I had a meeting with the Highways Department about two big issues in Anchorsholme. The first part of the meeting was regarding the state of the road where Seabrook Drive meets Eastpines Drive. This part of the road is in a terrible state and really need repairing. The second part of the meeting was about the bus shelter on Anchorsholme Lane that keeps flooding whenever it rains. Both of these jobs are now on the list for repair. However, I do not know at the moment the timescale for the repairs as it is dependent on funding. I will, of course, let you know when I receive any more information about the repairs and the date work will commence and like the street lights (see Monday) will keep chipping away however long it takes.
