who we are

Editorial [by Filaretos]

I will use this editorial in order to launch an open call about the forthcoming street festival. as

you might know, the 7th Kalamata Street Festival will take place at the train park of the city, the last weekend of July 2013 (25-28 July), it will be international, crowded and with many many activities!

which are the aims of the festival?

The Kalamata Street festival:

• aspires to promote the public spaces of the city, in order for the citizens to afterwards take over their creative use

• tries to give space to artists that often feel ex-cluded from the cultural life of the city (because their art is not “commonly accepted” or is even persecuted)

• aims to support the development of Kalamata as a live, multicultural city, that does not exclude or marginalize anyone, thus making it more at-tractive for its citizens as well as for visitors

• wants to promote creative and free expression as means to combat many social problems (rac-ism, discrimination, prejudices etc).

Last year, during the 3 days of the festival, more

than 4000 people visited or par-ticipated in some of its events. Music, concerts, theatre, dance shows, skates, exhibitions, graffi-ti, dirt bikes, basketball, bazaars, video art, eco-workshops, chil-dren workshops and people from all over Greece, Italy, brazil, Spain, France, turkey, estonia, Poland, Lithuania and Georgia created the most hot event of 2012’s summer in Kalamata! The most fantas-tic thing? everything is being done by volunteers and the cost of the festival is lower than 3000 eu-ros giving us the luxury to have free entrance for everybody!!!

thIS year, graffiti artists, hip hop musicians, animators and jugglers from all over europe, al-ready expressed their interest in joining the 7th street festival and we have to make our best in or-der to find the funds to host them in Kalamata... That’s the reason we are already at the preparation phase and we are making this open call for volun-teers, artists, associations, ngos and anyone who might be interested in joining us.

why joining? because the Kalamata Street Fes-tival is one event being organised by its people. a broaden coalition of organisations and individu-als from all areas of arts, sports and music, local, national and international, who are proving that creating something big, is not always matter of money but matter of people, motivation and cre-ativity!!!

The 7th Kalamata Street Festival aims to become a reference point for the city of Kalamata and offer the open space to the youth... just that... an open space for being creative, for expressing ourselves freely and have fun in an interactive way!

* MeDICINewe support the Social Solidarity Clinic of Kalamata and we invite the members of the youth Centre to bring from Monday to Thursday between 17:00 and 22:00 any medi-cine that they do not need anymore.you can also deliver them directly to the Social Solidarity Clinic of Kalamata if it is more convenient for you, which is located near the old hospital of the city of Kalamata.

* bICyCLeSDo you happen to have a bike that you don’t use it anymore or is standing in a base-ment etc. and you don’t need it, then don’t let it get rusty without use & please bring it to youth Centre - we have many volunteers who would kindly appreciate it! (Seriously, think about it and let us know, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just bike that is possible to bike with!!!)

* ChaIrSStrange as it may sound, the youth Center is in need of chairs! as everything gets older by using it a lot, the chairs in the youth Center keep breaking down once in a while and our dear volunteers have to move chairs from 1st floor to 2nd & vice versa all day long, in order to accomodate the different workshop. The workshops need chairs for the participants to sit & we don’t have enough to make the volunteer’s life easyer.

Leonardo Da Vinci is an exchange

program with three types of mo-

bility: the mobility of people for train-

ing (FPI); mobility of people present in

the Labour Market (PMt) and mobility

of professionals in education and Voca-

tional training (PeeP).

In order to participate in this program,

you cannot make an individual applica-

tion, you must always have a backup in-

stitutional organization. also, you cannot

be a student, you have to be integrated in

one of the three types of mobility.

The objectives of this program are:

•Improveyourknowledge,skills,inor-

der to facilitate your personal and pro-

fessional development, employability

and participation in the european labor

market;

•Assist in improving thequalityof the

institutions and practices of education

and training;

• Increasecooperationbetween institu-

In France,    I am a volunteer in organization since 5 years. This organization called « eS-

PaCe CorDIer-MJC », it’s an home youth and culture, like the youth Center in Kalamata, its non-profit/ nongovernmental organization with public fund.

The organization has 859 members, it has 8 per-manent employee (manager, assistant manag-er, stage manager, secretary, accountant, home agent, animator, and responsible for cultural ac-tion).

This organization is managed by a board of trust-

ees; I am trustee since 3 years.   The “eSPaCe CorDIer-MJC” are open tuesday at Saturday, 13.00 to 22.00.The public is 6 year from 70 years. 

The «  eSPaCe CorDIer – MJC  » offers 43 workshops like hip-hop dance, painting, guitar lessons, oriental dance, english lessons, gym, and photography.    It organized hip-hop festi-val, this festival are stop in 2009, for financial reasons. It organizes photo and painting exhibi-tions, concerts during the year. a part of organization, is responsible for mu-sic activity, it is called “Le ChauDroN” (in english: the cauldron). In “Le ChauDroN” , there are studio for recording and repetition, a bar and a concert hall. I was voluntary more precisely in this part; I was responsible of Con-cert hall programming. My work was to choose

music band for the concert hall, and did some flyers. The evening concert, I prepared the lodge, welcomed the band and the institutional part-ners, and I did sign the contract.

There are 15 concerts during the year; the styles of music are rap, reggae, metal.

During this 5 year, I discovered a lot of music band, I met a lot of people, I went a lot of con-certs.

when I will come back in France, I want to pro-mote eVS and to try that this organization can be received in the future eVS.

ing here?

I will be making a Leonardo Da Vinci in-

ternship, in the youth Center of Kalamata,

for 3 months. My main tasks will be to sup-

port the administrative work of K.a.Ne.

you had a previous volunteering ex-

perience in the field of Cooperation

for Development. Can you tell us

what that is?

Cooperation for Development is under-

stood as the support given to developing

countries by governments, agencies and

organizations, for the economic, environ-

mental, social and political development.

It is different from humanitarian aid, for

it focuses on long term results, rather than

on emergency interventions.

how did you find that volunteering

opportunity?

In 2006 I was studying Journalism in Lis-

bon. I found out about a youth organiza-

tion called ISu – academic Solidarity or-

ganization – that worked with portuguese

students, mainly on the themes of Volun-

teering and Cooperation for Development

(CD). ISu has developed CD projects in

Portugal and Africa: Mozambique, Cape

Verde, angola, east timor and Guinea bis-

sau.

that project also involved a youth

Center: how was it created?

In Cape Verde, ISu had developed a part-

nership with a Cape Verdean organization

since 2004, on the northern island of Santo

antão. This partnership intended to em-

power the local organization in promoting

the social and economic development of

the island and, in the same year, a youth

Center was launched in the main city of

Porto Novo, to help create opportunities

for youngsters in the region. So in 2006, a

team of three volunteers were sent to the

youth Center for two months, to give train-

ing to local volunteers who could, after our

departure, be able to boost their own activ-

ities in the Center.

what were the teams’ tasks during

those two months?

we provided training in organizing Librar-

ies (to librarians of the region and also to

the librarian of the youth Center); Comput-

er basic Skills (for the regular collaborators

of the Center); organizing activities (for

youngsters from the region) and created a

Volunteer Program, which implied training

in Volunteering (for youngsters) and Vol-

unteer Coordination (for the youth Cen-

ters’ Coordinator). I was responsible for the

Volunteer Program.

how would you describe your volun-

teering experience?

It was an amazing and enriching experi-

ence. Cape Verde is a very poor country,

although it has been very successful in im-

portant rates, like health or education. The

natural resources are very few (the sea is

very giving but the land is too dry for ag-

riculture or livestock), so people regularly

struggle for survival in an inspiring humble

attitude. They embrace learning opportu-

nities with an incredible interest. I have to

say it changed my life, because when I came

back I decided to continue studying in the

field of Social Development.

Do you have any advices for anyone

who is interested in volunteering in

the field of Cooperation for Devel-

opment?

Volunteer within an organization with a

philosophy you identify with, because there

are many projects that carry hidden inten-

tions at the political, religious or economical

level. Volunteer within an organization that

has a local partnership, so that it is more re-

spectful to the local needs, instead of creat-

ing projects in a «euro-centered» perspec-

tive. Participate in tasks that can empower

those who live in those countries, instead of

replacing them and stealing the opportuni-

ty to learn new skills and gain new experi-

ences. and then…. Just enjoy the wonder-

ful GIVe and taKe!

you may have seen the awe-some poster announcing the

Dance Party that happened at the youth Center on the Saturday, 9th of February, uh? These two old peo-ple dancing dynamically together, in a lovely way…

actually, our Dance Party did not really look like that. as its name shows,

the youth Center was full of young people. and even if most of them didn’t

dance, everybody was in a good mood. and it seems that the beers were re-

ally good this night.

well, the volunteers had prepared a nice playlist with plenty of different song:

salsa, tango, rock, swing, and off course traditional Greek music. after a few

hours dancing a little bit of salsa and drinking beers and wine, a lot of peo-

ple has been attracted on the dance-floor by the sound of traditional Greek

music. Then, we started round dance, following the ones who are masters in

Greek dance.

to conclude, even if this party was not so “danced” that we were expecting,

it has shown that people also enjoy coming during week-ends at the youth

Center, and spending time talking and drinking all together; that is – I think

– one of the most important thing in life!

in major events such as presentations

of theater plays, other cultural events,

to some cultural organizations, groups,

schools or youth associations to take

months ago when Fouli Lagiou invited

me to come for a special program. They

recorded me presenting... in Greek,

some French singers and bands such

besides, I've had the opportunity to record with Kaja, a famous slovenian sing-

program. It was a really nice experience especially to learn not to be too per-

fectionist !

after the earthquake in 1986

which destroyed the beautiful

city of Peloponnesus, the Local radio

Station Kalamata started to operate.

During these very difficult days, this

new place was decisive because it was

the only way to inform the citizens

who lived in tents.

Γεια σας! or as it should say in Spanish... “¡hola!”. as you can see I have done my second trip around eu-

rope and I travelled to this lovely country…Spain!! I did a route to different cities and the first one was the famous city of barcelona where I took this amazing picture in the Park Güell of the well-known architect Gaudi!! The place was really magic!! It was full of colours and you could see the whole city from there!

after barcelona, I took a bus to Pamplona (Navarra) in the north of Spain, the city known all around the world for San Fermín party!! During 14 days the people of the city get crazy, they wear red and white dresses and they drink in the street during all the day!! I met a lot of fun-ny and welcoming people (you can see me in the picture

with my new friends Gorka, Iker and Patxi) and they gave me to try a Spanish drink called “Kalimotxo” made by wine and coke… it was really nice and I got a little bit drunk! hip! hip! I danced all night long!! In the morn-ings the people run in front of the bulls which are really big and fast, I was a little bit afraid…!! brrr!! I needed to close my eyes in more than one occasion!!Following my trip, the next stop was in bilbao, in the Vasc country. This region is wonderful. They speak in Span-ish but also in another language (vasc) which I couldn’t

understand at all, it’s completely different from Spanish and very ancient! In bilbao I drank in small taverns in the historical center and I went next to the river to the Guggenheim Museum, ooh…. such a modern architec-ture..!!I continued my trip towards the North-west and I ar-rived to Galicia, to “Santiago de Compostela”, where the famous “Camino de Santiago” finishes. This is a city full

of magic, where the people is really sweet and welcom-ing.Idranksomecoffee-liquorandIlistenedtoCelticlive music…it was awesome! you can see my picture in the front of the Cathedral where all the people meet on the 25th of July, the day of the saint Santiago!!

(Mosque)andItookthispictureinside…Iwasfeelinglike a king sit there!!My last stop is in Madrid… the capital from Spain, and I will spend here still a few days… I show you a picture with the royal Palace behind me, it is really impressive! I have already met some nice people, I walked along the Gran Vía street and I ate some “cerveza” (beer) with tra-ditional “tapas”, Spanish jam….delicious!!
