change comes from within

Give your home a Spring

makeover CHECK OUT THE TOP DÉCOR TRENDS, AND FIND OUT WHICH ONE WILL SUIT yOU AND YOUR HOME.

B land neutrals have finally been given the boot and colour has triumphed, meaning that in 2010 rooms will glow with warmth and character. Feel free to use beautiful, blooming florals, or add impact with strong

blocks of colour mimicking catwalk styles. Even devotees of cool monochrome schemes should add injections of colour to bring them bang up to date. Be cool and contemporary with zingy accents of bubblegum pink, citrus yellow and lime or opt for rich, luscious plums and purples and lipstick reds for a glamorous, luxurious look. Throw caution to the wind and mix elements of different styles, eras, colours and patterns to create a look that works for you. “Homes should be personal reflections of their owners, where treasured possessions complementary in colour, texture and form are displayed, and the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed.” So if you love nature but feel florals are too girly or fussy for your rooms, opt for the more funky 'country chic', which mimics a hunting lodge look.

Follow our experts guide to the hot new trends for interiors...

Go for spring greens Soft, deep shades such as moss greens, are renowned for their calming effect, but don't overlook bright leaf green and lime which are starring on everything from textiles to wall coverings. Introducing shades inspired by nature is an ideal way to freshen up a neutral scheme, says Mockie Harrison, manager of John Lewis's Home Design Studio. "Soft honey and cool neutral tones are juxtaposed against vibrant hues such as leaf green, pumpkin, purple and kingfisher blue." Tip: Muted greens team well with soft mimosa yellows, warm ambers, and bronzes. Add complementary materials such as dark stained wood, copper and reactive glazes.

It's a shore thing "A relaxed, coastal look will be ultra fashionable," says Marnie Janaway, head of home design for Sainsbury's. "The allure of the sea is strong this year, with all things nautical in vogue. Refresh a home with an airy Hamptons beach house palette of tranquil blues and understated neutrals. Tip: Paint floorboards in white, add New England-style white painted furniture, and add sea-blue shades in blinds, rugs and accessories for a holiday home look. Get the look: Get ship-shape with Sainsbury's blue and white striped cushions £6 each, throw, £10 from the Tu range, and a Beach huts framed print, £15.

Flower power "One of the strongest trends will be florals which have been given a modern-day shake-up," forecasts Sally Bendelow, head of Home Design for Marks & Spencer. "The new twist uses bold painted and large scale botanical prints. To make them look more contemporary we've mixed 3D florals with houndstooth and graduated stripe patterns." Get the look: Marks & Spencer's florals collection

includes a fab Peony Rug, £49.50, and Fraser Armchair in Aster Plum, £849. The red Poppy bedding range, duvet set from £45 is also stunning.

Monochrome magic Black and white continues to be the sophisticated leader in décor trends. It's a winner because it's a look that's easy to live with, but this year must be warmed with flashes of bright colour from lemon to lime hues. Suzanne Beechey, divisional homeware buying manager for Bhs, says: "The popularity of a monochrome colour palette has grown over the years. But to give the look more depth accessorise with bold colours. Lemons and limes really add a new dimension to this classic trend. Tip: Monochrome is an elegant foil for lush silks and velvets and sparkles when accessorised with metallic touches. Get the look: Bhs' Gloss collection features some monochrome classics, a black and white Jam dining chair, £150, sparkling white gloss Eloise table, £395, and Demure dinnerware from £5.

Glamour & colour Tough times make us all crave comforting but visually appealing sanctuaries, and that means rooms dressed with sensual fabrics, rich colours, and statement pieces. Mix old-world glamour with artist studio chic for an unpredictable, edgy but luxurious scheme. "Our homes need to be uplifting and full of light, colour and energy."

Tip: Test your taste by taking the plunge with colourful accessories - zesty orange, green and yellow - set against a neutral background, and include exuberant patterns. Get the look: Sunshine colours star in Next's dazzling floral wall canvasses, set of nine £80, or pick fun red, blue and pink faux leather floor cubes, £45.

T hink you're having trouble staying on top of this season's fashion fads? Well, just try keeping up with the hottest hair colour trends. Scarlett Johansson turned to the bottle for the fourth time for a dramatic colour change,

ditching her trademark blonde for brunette. And the actress isn't alone in using hair colour to make a dramatic statement. Forget the stylist, the colourist is every celebrity's secret weaponN Cheryl Cole shocked onlookers with a deep

plum shade for a photoshoot and trend-setting Peaches Geldof followed suit. Fast-forward a couple of months and Cheryl's back to brunette and Peaches is dark blonde.

Colour is one of the easiest ways of transforming your look

says hairdresser Andrew Barton.

Whether you want to maintain your colour or work a stop-and-stare shade, make sure you have hair that's to 'dye' for. The hair industry's top experts are on

It's easy to be flummoxed by colour charts and types of dye jobs at your fingertips. Ensure you take your skin tone, budget and commitment levels into account before you colour.

How can I choose a flattering colour? "It's really all about the skin tone and eye colour," Andrew Barton explains. "The more dramatic the hair colour change is from your natural hair colour, the more make-up you'll need to wear. Girls with darker complexions tend to suit shades that are warmer like reds, rich browns and warm blondes, where paler skins suit pastel shades, icy blondes and pale browns." I'm a first-timer to colour, how will I know if it suits me? "If you are going darker or changing the tone completely, I would recommend using semi-permanent colour, certainly in the first instance, as this will fade naturally," suggests 10 Years Younger colourist Lisa Shepherd. "From there you can assess whether the shade suits you and if it is something you can wear permanently."

Permanent colour conundrums Should you leave your hair in the hands of the experts or take the plunge and save cash with DIY colour? Whatever you decide, ensure you wait 48 hours after carrying out a skin allergy test and check out www.becoloursafe.com I can't stand the smell and sting of ammonia in the salon, is there an effective alternative? "L'Oreal Professional's Inoa (www.inoa.co.uk) is the new odourless and ammonia-free permanent hair colour," explains Julie McManus, L'Oreal senior scientific advisor. "Hair colourants do traditionally damage the hair but with Inoa, which has been developed with a very conditioning formulation, the condition of the hair is actually protected."

How often should I colour my hair? "Colour your hair every four to six weeks to help prevent colour banding within the hair," advises celebrity colourist Mark Ramos. Do I need specific shampoo and conditioners for post-coloured hair? "Regular shampoo and conditioner can or may contain sulphates – these detergents will clean the hair but may strip and remove colour that you have had lovingly applied resulting in colour fade," warns

Sarah Brookes, Tigi international creative director. "Ensure that you are using shampoo and conditioner that specifies it is colour safe, sulphate-free shampoo to help prolong your colour."

How can I avoid fade? "With freshly-coloured hair, don't wash it too frequently - water is the main cause for fading," advises Dr Frauke Neuser, Clairol scientist. "Always protect hair colour against the sun. There are various heat protection products available but the best of all is a hat."

"When colouring at home, if you apply colour all over the hair each time you dye, it can become unnecessarily dry and damaged," warns stylist Sean Hanna. "By applying the colour product only at the roots or the area where it is needed, over-processing can be avoided."

How can I tackle root re-growth?

Thornton Ladies’ Club In February Sara, one of our own ladies and a cardiac nurse at Blackpool Victoria, gave an excellent talk on how to keep our hearts healthy and how to prevent / deal with heart attacks. Jenny from Burnside Garden Centre, with two other ladies, gave an excellent talk and demonstration on ‘Making a successful hanging baskets and planters’. The evening was a HUGE success with our largest number of ladies in attendance (almost 40). The April 21st meeting coincides with the Queen’s birthday and so we will celebrate by having our ‘Right Royal Occasion’. Ladies are encouraged to ‘glam up’ for the evening as we are going to have a Tea Party with a difference! If you have a cake stand, china tea pot, tea strainer or china tea cup please bring them along. There will be a selection of teas to sample and cakes! Stella from ‘Home Maid by Stella’ one of our local caterers will talk to us about cake decorations and then we will decorate our own cup cake before eating it! –

Should be a fun evening if nothing else, the Queen has been invited but is a little busy (so any lady with a birthday that day / week will be welcome as guest of honour). We plan to have a cake stall on the evening to sell cakes with all proceeds going to the Children of Watamu, Happy House Project. So, we look forward to seeing you in April, the Ladies’ Club is open to any lady of any age and is held at St John’s Church Hall, Stanah. Third Wednesday in every month doors open 7.30 but meeting ‘official’ from 8.00 with a planned finish as 9.00pm. Why not treat yourself to a couple of hours a month of ‘my time’ get out and have some fun NNNNNN join us. Further details from Lesley 01253 851007 or just turn up on the night.

FIRST DRIVE: CITROEN

The CITROEN DS3 IS STYLISH, WELL-EQUIPPED AND LUXURIOUS. PATTERNED CARPETS, COLOURED SEAT INLAYS AND DASHES OF CHROME ADD TO THE OVERALL UPMARKET FEEL.

I t has been some time since Mini could claim to have the market cornered for trendy city cars boasting both style and substance, but the fashionable high-streets currently dominated by the ever-expanding Mini range, the Alfa Romeo

Mito and the smaller but all-conquering Fiat 500 are about to become even more lively with the arrival of the Citroen DS3. When a production model resembles its concept predecessor so closely it is a sure sign that the manufacturer is about to try something new. With the C3 updated for the new decade and the recent arrival of the practical but creatively styled C3 Picasso taking care of the volume compact hatchback and compact MPV sector, the DS3 is a new attempt to break into the premium compact hatchback sector with a stylish, well-equipped and generally more luxurious model.

At first glance, Citroen appears to have cracked it. There are bold styling gestures that may or may not be immediately liked and that may or may not grow on car-buyers over time, but as a package the DS3 is every bit as attractive and arguably more forward thinking in its design than its rivals.

Unlike some of the competition the DS3 is not a modern take

on past glories. Attempting to be a design classic in its own right, the model can hardly be accused of trading on its name either. Car historians and Citroen fanatics may raise an eyebrow at the rekindling of the DS moniker, but the French manufacturer is not claiming the DS3 is a modern interpretation of the fifties style icon. The DS4 and DS5 models that will follow shortly will make no such claims, either.

The intention of the DS sub (or uber) brand is visible in the lack of Citroen chevrons on the rear. A special DS badge takes their place, marking the DS line-up out as a range in its own right. That said, the visual similarities to the Citroen C3 are present inside and out, but DS3 customers can expect a far greater degree of customisation from their cars. Citroen has retooled its factory especially to deal with two-tone bodywork and roof decals of the DS3. The basic layout of the DS3 interior is familiar from the standard new C3, but there are more than enough additions to make the luxury model feel just that. Dashboards can be specified in a range of colours and shapely interior panels are soft to touch and lined with more exuberant materials. Patterned carpets, coloured seat inlays and dashes of chrome add to the upmarket feel. Recessed dials are complimented with internally lit needles that jump into life when the engine starts. With the range-topping 154bhp turbocharged petrol engine drivers will also be met with an appealing, sporty exhaust note. The engine, the result of a partnership between Peugeot, Citroen and BMW proves well suited to the DS3 in 150 THP form, making the car feel far keener than the Citroen C3. The crisp gear change and responsive, well-weighted steering help, too. The suspension is firm and the DS3 can be chucked into bends with confidence, but it's also damped to deal with rougher surfaces even on the DSport model's 17-inch wheels. As a compromise between city driving and the open road it's hard to fault. The DS3 shouldn't prove a struggle to live with, either. The boot is very accommodating and, while the three-

door body naturally restricts access to the rear, it will suit for two adults over shorter journeys. The chunky B-pillar may spoil their view somewhat, but visibility from the driver's seat is very good and the front passenger benefits from a recessed glove compartment that allows extra legroom. Three trim levels - DSport, DStyle, DSign - are available dependant on engine choice and there are enough customisation opportunities to give the DS3 a truly bespoke feel. A 99g/km CO2 emitting model should also attract attention from fashionable city car fans. Tax-free status could be as appealing as the floating roof and LED running lamps. It is more than adequately equipped to tackle the competitive but lucrative premium small car segment in the styling stakes, but the DS3's enjoyable driving experience and neat packaging give it more than just high street chic.

Pensions - Open Market Options

Always shop around, Let’s start from the beginning. Annuity it’s another word for pension.

W hen you are about to retire, and you start looking at your pension plan/s wondering what level of income

they will give you, it can be very tempting to succumb to the first annuity quote you receive (usually from your existing provider). However, bear in mind that with the average life expectancy now between 85 and 90, your annuity (pension) might have to pay out for more than 20 years - and, despite its seeming irrelevance at the moment, inflation can seriously impact your spending power over that time. (what you could have bought with £10 in 1989 would in 2009 cost you £18.54!!!! – source Bank of England).

It is therefore sensible, I would even go so far as to say essential, that you shop around because there are various options to choose from if you want to make the most of your money. For example, there is an index-linked annuity, which is tied to the rate of inflation, an escalating annuity, which rises at a fixed rate each year, regardless of inflation (in other words, some years the rise may be greater, some years it may be less) and if you are more adventurous, you could even link your income to the ups and downs of investments (providing you are prepared to take the risk). All of these options are likely to offer a lower starting income than the equivalent level annuity, but over the long term, your ability to afford the same lifestyle could be better protected.

Of course, your own individual circumstances may mean a mixture of annuities is appropriate. Or, depending on your appetite for risk, and size of your fund, you might even have the option to defer the annuity purchase. If you can leave that until later in life, or if you suffer from poor health, the potential for higher income from a level annuity may outweigh other issues.

I always say to any of my clients when they ask me about drawing their annuity, ‘Ask yourself three questions’:- 1) are you a smoker? 2) have you received any hospital treatment for any medical condition? and 3) are you taking any prescribed medication? If the answer to any or all three is a Yes that potentially could significantly increase the amount of pension they may eventually receive.

But remember, whatever you decide, it’s important you make sure you shop around and pick the right option, because you can’t change your mind once you’ve bought it! Sound daunting? Don’t worry, there’s lots of help available to you out there ie useful publications one in particular by The Pensions Regulator (‘Making Your Retirement Choices – Think Before You Choose’) is simple, straightforward and easy to follow; if you want a copy please let me know. And don’t forget, local independent financial advisers are able to offer professional and friendly advice to walk you through the maze. TCFC LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PROMOTION RUN IN

T hornton Cleveleys FC retained top spot in the Sports 360 West Lancashire League Division 1 with four

points from six in early March. Wyre Villa played hosts to Thornton and found themselves on the wrong side of a 3 – 1 defeat. Goals from Matthews, Langton and Warwick and a man of the match performance from Tom Didlock ensured they kept the pressure on their closest rivals in top spot heading in to their top of the table clash against Fleetwood Hesketh. March the 13th saw TCFC and their travelling band of supporters making the trip to Fleetwood Hesketh in the hope of taking all three points to extend their lead and make promotion almost a certainty. A game of two halves saw the two well matched sides share the spoils in a fiercely contested encounter .Anthony Warwick netting for Thornton and Chris Matthews producing a man of the match display. The only down side in another wise recent fantastic run of form was a 1 – 4 home defeat to Burnley Utd in the Presidents Cup with Anthony Warwick scoring the consolation goal. This result was possibly a blessing in disguise - as although a football cliché, it allows the New Bourne Park team to concentrate on their push to the West Lancs. Premier League. With only 6 games remaining and promotion for the second season running almost a guaranteed certainty, manager Mendonca was keen to point out that he is not taking things for granted. “We have shown this season that we can play attractive passing football but have also shown we are resilient enough to grind out a result as and when required and also have to maintain maximum concentration in each and every game we have left.” Looking towards the run in Mendonca also pointed out that the growing number of supporters that are coming to watch his team both home and away will be key to them joining the West Lancs elite “ At each home game we have noticed the numbers of people we have coming to support us has been increasing week on week . I think football fans up and down the country are enjoying

watching their local teams with local home grown talent rather than having to pay fortunes to watch the overpaid prima donnas in the Premiership and the likes. We have had plenty of positive comments from football fans who have come and watched us play for the first time and have really enjoyed what they have seen. Playing in front of all the new and old fans gives me and the lads a real buzz to go out there and perform even better.” Sports 360 West Lancashire League Division 1Fixtures in March & April 3pm Kick Off 24 April 2010 , Kick Off : 18:00 T.C.F.C Seniors 1st Team v MillHill St. Peters West Lancashire League 20 April 2010 , Kick Off : 18:00 Norcross and Warbreck v T.C.F.C Seniors 1st Team West Lancashire League 17 April 2010 , Kick Off : 15:00 Slyne With Hest v T.C.F.C Seniors 1st Team West Lancashire League 10 April 2010 , Kick Off : 15:00 T.C.F.C Seniors 1st Team v Wyre Villa West Lancashire League 03 April 2010 , Kick Off : 15:00 Croshills v T.C.F.C Seniors 1st Team Have a Free Pint on Us LINK Readers can get a free pint of Carling/Fosters Lager or Smooth/Bitter Just bring this copy with you to the club any Saturday in March between 2.30pm and 5pm Bring a friend and when its your turn to buy the round we will give you the second pint free.
