NEWSLETTERWord of the Month

FOCUS . Training at Link’s Martial Arts offers more than tradition and techniques. We provide the opportunity for self-improvement through the development of Black Belt qualities.

Focus is a Black Belt quality required to achieve success. It requires patience, repetition, determination, and the courage to overcome any road block that stands in the way.

Road blocks may appear wearing many disguises. They may come disguised as boredom, failure, slow progress, or outside interference, but one thing all road blocks have in common is - “There is always a way to get around them and get back on the path to success.”

Remaining focused on a goal is a key factor in finding a way around any roadblock.

We can train our focus by challenging ourselves to achieve more than we ever dreamed possible. We can work this aspect in class by always giving our best effort and then going above and beyond what is expected of us. Furthermore, always looking for the positive aspects of what has already been achieved and learning more about what we think we already know.

Remember that, “The usefulness of a cup, is it’s emptiness.” There is always an improvement that can be made. Repetition, determination and courage are the way to success. Sometimes it takes a long time for improvements to take hold and focused patience is required to see a successful result.

Developing the Black Belt quality of focus will allow students to face all challenges, overcome difficulties, and celebrate the sweetness of success.

Whether you are setting a goal to be an outstanding martial arts student, an elite competitor, an accomplished black belt or all of the above, you will require focus to see them through to completion.

Meet the challenge of remaining focused by setting a high standard of achievement in both technique and spirit during every class you attend.

BODY, MIND, SPIRITBLUE ZONES PROJECT

“A Plant Based Diet has a Positive impact on Your Body, Mind, & Spirit”

Link’s Martial Arts supports healthy behaviors through martial arts training, outstanding opportunities, and our LMA family/Moai. There are 9 Blue Zones Principles. This Project focuses on Purpose, Belong, and Down Shift.

How to create your own Martial Arts 30 Day fitness challenge for a stronger body, mind, and spirit.

STEP 1 - Identify your goal or purpose. What do you want the result to achieve? For example: your challenge could be to work on, 1 individual technique, Martial arts concept, or form. After 30 days, the result would be outstanding improvement!

STEP 2 - Create a series of mini actions that your fellow students will pledge to take part in on a daily basis. Remember, List at least 1 mini action for each day of your challenge.

STEP 3 - Ask at least 1 or more people to take part in your Martial Arts Fitness Challenge.

STEP 4 - Run your Martial Arts 30 Day Fitness Challenge from November 1 - November 30.

STEP 5 - Be sure to inspire and motivate your group daily.

STEP 6 - Reap the rewards of achieving your goal!

This type of activity helps a student learn to keep their motivation focused on success. It is a valuable training tool to help a student identify their greater purpose, stay on track, and never give up.

Mr Krukar earned his first degree Black Belt on September 28, 2019. One of his many requirements was to write a paper on meditation. The result of his work is a outline of user friendly steps that any of his fellow students could follow to achieve success in the area of meditation. Meditation by Mr. Krukar... First it is important for me to truly have the intention to meditate, to carve out the time, fifteen minutes at least, best on an empty stomach, a bit after exercise is good, to put aside work or home responsibilities, distractions, TV, and to just sit.

I sit either on the floor with my back to the couch or in a chair with a straight back. I find the chair to be more comfortable, and that being comfortable and keeping the spine straight are important. If my back is not straight, I tend to get sleepy. My environment needs to be quiet.

I like to place my left hand in my right and to bring my thumbs together so that they are parallel to each other and touching. I have tried different hand positions but this one seems give the best energy.

I close my eyes, and keep my eye level as if I were looking a bit up from between my eyes, and between my eyebrows. This eye level positioning seems important. I mentally focus on listening to my breath, and counting in my mind to 20, as I breathe in and out slowly (“in 1…out 1…”) through my nose. If I get distracted, I just come back to the count with no judgement and resume. I might have to start over. I find that no judgement or labeling during meditation is important.

Once I complete 20 deep breaths, then I perform a body scan and imagine a bright blue horizontal light starting at the top of my head and slowly moving down my body. I imagine I can see the light as it moves slowly down my body. As it proceeds over each body part, I focus on relaxing the body part.

Meditation by Mr. Krukar Continued from page 2Once the body scan is complete, I imagine seeing myself sitting and with each in breath I visualize energy coming up from the ground, coursing through me to the top of my head, and as I exhale I imagine smoke, which represents tension, negative thoughts and energy, being expelled high up into the air, and leaving me. After about 10 of these cleansing breaths, with the smoke decreasing with each breath, I then imagine the same sequence, but this time the energy comes up and is clear and bright when it is expelled high in the air and represents kindness and well-being for all on the earth.

After a few minutes of spreading kindness and well being, I imagine seeing in the distance the shape of a mountain and a bright moon to the upper left of the mountain. I then focus on the bright moon, pay attention to my breathing, and just return to the breath and the moon if I become distracted, with no judgement or anger. If I am able to sustain focus and avoid all the mental chatter, which becomes easier with practice, then after a few minutes I may notice a subtle shift in my awareness. It is at these times that my mind becomes very quiet and it may feel like I am just outside of it and observing. I might experience a feeling of timelessness at this point, and all of a sudden a half hour may have passed. I stop when I feel like I am ready and try to open my eyes slowly and just sit there for a minute, with my eyes open yet my mind still calm and aware, just looking and hearing. After a few minutes, I get up.

What did you learn from the event that will make you a better Martial Artist; At the tournament, I gained a little more confidence in what I was doing. In sparring, I gained a lot of confidence because that is the first time I’ve won a competitive sparring match. At the banquet I saw how much awards I was part of, and that showed me how much of a leader I am.

What was your favorite part of the event; One of my favorite parts of the event was when Master Link asked me to show off a little and do a backflip when I won first place. Another favorite part of the event was all the food, I ate so much food that day but it was worth it. I love Chinese food.

Would you like to learn more about this martial arts and why; I would like to because it is a good way to gain more confidence in your forms and in sparring. This type of martial arts can help you get better in every thing that you are doing because you can get advice from other people of what you can change.

Mr. Keagan Crago earned his Junior Black Belt on September 28, 2019. One of his many requirements was to fill out Seminar / Special Event participation forms. We have included one of Keagan’s submissions so his fellow students can understand the benefits that can be obtained by participating in martial arts competition. Both LMA and travel tournament event opportunities.
