“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.”
~ Mark Van Doren~
Be a show-off! Please share photos of students engaged in learning or
just a special event taking place in your class or school. To make the
sharing easier, we have created a folder on the district P drive entitled ―00
PPSB Media Collection 2012-2013‖. When you open this folder you will
see additional folders labeled with school initials. Click on the one you are
associated with and add your pictures. Be sure to label the picture so that
we know what class or lesson the picture is associated with.
The technology shined this year at the 2012-13 school year’s opening at
Boothville-Venice Elementary School. .The Wizard of Oz movie clips
and characters in this school year’s opening presentation entitled,
―Ease On Down the Road‖, gave teachers and school administrators
an insight of how important it is for educators to guide students in
becoming active participants in their learning opportunities both in and
out of the classroom.
Have You Heard? Did You See?
New teachers to our district got a special treat, on
Thursday, August 4. Jennifer Henton, with
Summit Integration (formally Creative), did a basic
training for the Smartboard to help new teachers
get familiar with some of its basic features.
A “Smart” Welcome to New Teachers!

Cindy O’Brien and Kathy Susor, the librarians at BCHS,
are working on ways to encourage students to read more
They are taking advantage of the available technology by
using it to create an information brochure of study
resources that can be found online and through the library.
They are also in the process of building a BCHS library
Google site that will include student book review podcasts.
Finally, they are utilizing Accelerated Reader and creating
a million word contest called ―Who Wants to be a
Millionaire?‖ for students.

Content Trailers introduce students to vocabulary with images, text and
music. They are a great way to start a lesson. The content trailer on
August 8th was made with Powerpoint but it’s also easy to make them
with photo story.
The final content trailer was a game to check for understanding. A little
challenging to do in a room of 400, but in a classroom, it could be a
great summary and assessment activity. It was the same content trailer
– without the words. In a classroom you could pause for students to
answer with a definition.
Check out the content trailers created by West Baton Rouge teachers.

The movie was made with a very basic Sony Handycam Camera. The
key is starting early in the year if you are doing a presentation about
your year. Take photos or video clips throughout the year and then
learn how to turn them into a movie to share with your parents or on the
web. Better yet, have students work in groups and one of the groups
could create a video.
The story clips were made using GIMP image editing software and
powerpoint. The powerpoint slides were exported as JPG’s and
inserted into the movie.
The audio clips were made with Audacity. Each person recorded their
voice and a cheerful sound clip was added in the background. This is a
very simple program and could be integrated into any class subject.

Random Name Chooser – If you are using less than 36
names, or using the same names over and over, I would
recommend using the Smartboard random word chooser.
The online chooser I found is not perfect but I like that it
doesn’t have ads. Once you click save and share, there is
an embed code that allows you to embed the name chooser
on your website. http://primaryschoolict.com/random-name-
selector/
The clip of the movie was a You Tube clip that was downloaded and cut
to just the content we wanted to share using Windows Movie Maker.
We have a different movie editing software on the computers. Movie
Maker is not a part of the updated version of Microsoft.

We’ve created a great resource for you in Power Teacher. You can now print a list of your students with their log in and passwords as well as print out labels with the same information. Go to:
PPSB Tech Dept. For Teachers
Click on tab on right labeled, ―created for teachers‖, next click on ―instructions‖ and you can print the pdf entitled ―Printing Labels in Power Teacher‖.
Please be responsible with the list of passwords. Do not have students use each other’s
passwords and do not log in on a computer with your log in for student use.

Cross Curriculum Maps were created by integrating all the subject areas on the same spreadsheet. If you would like to relate your subject to another class, check the curriculum maps. Before you make a plan, double check with the other teacher to see if the curriculum maps schedules are accurate to their planning. If you have a change to the curriculum maps, please email Courtney Bullock. To find the maps: Go to ppsb.org, faculty, teacher tech center, teachers, curriculum maps or click here.
Teaching Across the Curriculum
We’ve created a new look for the PPSB Tech Department for Teachers Website. On the home page you can see what types of projects we’ve been helping teachers with. Click on Grants and Contests for a list of great opportunities for teachers as well as students. There are links to various publications, technology standards, and presentations created for and by teachers, a resource list of what you have on your computer and instructions for how to do sheets we’ve handed out at tech cafes and workshops. Please feel free to call or email us if:
