WELCOME TO THE 2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Welcome everyone to the 2014 school year at GK! Hard to believe, but another school year is underway.
It’s always great to know that our students, staff and families have returned safely from the holiday period. A
very special welcome to the many new students, families and staff who join GK for the first time. We
welcome several new staff members Sarah Bywater (Preps), Tamara Brown (4), Sarah Longo (4) and
Maryann O’Reilly (5). Jodee Jackson also joins the admin team each Thursday and Friday so welcome
Jodee! We welcome back Erin Rodgers (formerly Erin Heddle) who was on leave from GK in 2013.
Congratulations also to Jane Byrne (formerly Jane Angel) on her marriage during January.
We had an extremely smooth and orderly start to the school year last Thursday with all of our students in
grades 1-6 returning with smiles on their faces and plenty of enthusiasm for the year ahead. Everyone has
settled into their new class routines quickly and the scene is all set for a terrific year ahead.
On Friday, last week, a very excited group of Prep students commenced school for the first time and what
an exciting morning they had too! I’m sure some of our Preppies (and parents) thought the day would never
eventuate, such was their level of excitement and enthusiasm! Special thanks to our Parents and Friends
Welcome Committee for providing a welcoming “Cheers & Tears” morning tea which I know was
appreciated by those able to attend.
A big thank you also to parents for doing a great job of making sure that your children have returned with
their book bags, water bottles, hats and other items necessary for school. Well done on your organisation!
I also pass on my appreciation and thanks to a fantastic team effort that has enabled such a smooth start to
the year. Since the last school day in 2013, many staff have continued to be in and out of the school ahead
of their official return date which was Jan 28th. Their planning and organisation is to be commended, the
results of which have been seen this week. Thank you!
PARENT COMMUNICATIONS
In the early part of a new school year, there is a lot of information that we need to get out to parents. The
information is intended to inform you, not overwhelm you! For some of our families, information will provide
some welcome reminders, for others the information may be entirely new, some information will be for
reading only whilst in some cases, parents will need to respond by signing and returning a notice to school.
The online weekly Linkletter and our website will always be two primary means of getting information out to
our families. Other notices will also be distributed from time to time too. Today, two hard copy documents
requiring parents to read and return have been sent home with each child. You should receive the following
documents today:-
Acceptable Use of Digital Technologies Student Agreement form (blue); Getting to know my child in 2014 &
2014 General information & start of year requirements information sheet
The above documents have also been placed on our website / Notices tab. Please return the parent
response forms by next Friday, February 14th. By the end of February, we will also be sending home grade
level information packs which will provide a comprehensive amount of information for parents.
EXTREME HOT WEATHER
Please refer to an article on the home page of our school website. It seems there is still plenty of hot
weather ahead of us and of serious concern are those days when the weather is predicted to be extreme
and or catastrophic.

REMINDERS:
SUNHATS -
Students must have their GK sunsmart hat ready to begin the school year in
2014. The ‘NO HAT, NO PLAY’ rule operates during from September through to
April so please make sure those hats are in school bags and ready to be worn on
the first day of school.
NAME EVERYTHING PLEASE -
Personal items of clothing, hats, school bags, lunch bottles, water bottles, books etc. all need to be clear-
ly named from day 1 please. A lost property tub is located in the administration area so please ask to
check through the lost property tub if your child is missing something.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
SCHOOL CROSSINGS Please use the crossings as directed by the crossing supervisors. Set the right example and don’t be tempted to
walk with your child/ren directly across the road instead of walking a bit further and crossing safely. This also
includes not taking short cuts across the roundabout.
Currently we are missing our usual crossing supervisor, Michelle, who unfortunately is recovering from a broken
ankle. We wish Michelle a speedy recovery and we will see her back again once she is fit and well enough to re-
turn to duty. In Michelle’s absence, we welcome Ange who is helping out for the time being. On the lower cross-
ing, we welcome one of our parents, Tracey Russell, who is now a permanent crossing supervisor. We are very
lucky to have two supervised crossings in Calendonia Dve and thankyou to our supervisors who do a great job in
managing the pedestrian traffic.
STREET PARKING Please take notice of the parking restrictions in Calendonia Drive and nearby streets. You will be booked if a By-
laws Officer notices you doing the wrong thing.
PLEASE READ THE PARKING RESTRICTION SIGNS CAREFULLY to avoid being booked.
SCHOOL/STAFF CARPARK The carpark is only able to be used for a 2 minute pick-up or drop off (ALONG THE DOUBLE YELLOW
LINES ONLY). Parents/grandparents are advised that the carpark is not to be used for parking and walking stu-
dents to/from classrooms. Where it is observed that parents are parking their cars in the carpark, there will be fol-
low up. We are a large school and need all of the parking spaces for teachers, non teaching staff, and others who
visit the school on school business (tradesmen, psychologists, speech pathologists, pre-service teachers etc.) We
have a number of part time staff who have different start and finish times so spaces need to be available for the
parking needs of all staff and school business visitors.
Further information regarding how the pick-up and drop off zone works can be found on our website (About Us
/ Facilities & Grounds / Pick-up and Drop-off Zone). When drivers follow the rules, the pick-up and drop-off
area generally runs as safely and smoothly as possible during the busy peak 15 minutes period prior to and after
school.
St HELENA COLLEGE CARPARK Please note that the College carpark is only for the use of college staff and students. A number of their students
are also drivers so the college needs all parking spaces to be available for their use.
Hoping for everyone’s cooperation please …. Jill Ramsay

CANTEEN
ROSTER:
The Canteen Pricelist has been sent home with the eldest child & I will keep you up to date with any special items or changes in the Linkletter each week. Please contact me if you haven’t received one & I will make sure one goes home with your eldest child. A current menu will be on the GK website.
Just a reminder that the Preps will not be using the Canteen for lunch orders or counter sales until the week of Monday, 3rd March, when they start full time.
The canteen has an optional process in place for children with allergies who would like to place a lunch order, & will be contacting those families as soon as possible to explain how this works.
Hopefully all my lovely volunteers will have received their rosters by now – maybe check those school bags to see if they are still hiding in there – but don’t hesitate to contact me to arrange another if needed!! The roster will also be up-dated regularly on the GK website.
We are starting the year off with an almost full roster, however I do currently have a couple of vacancies for the 1st and 2nd Wednesdays of the month. I would love to hear from anyone if you think you might be available to assist once a month or on the emergency list.
Thanks, Suzi Cunningham

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Glen Katherine participates in a Book club for students which is run in conjunction with Scholastic Australia. This operates
eight times a year and offers you a convenient way to purchase books and computer software at reasonable prices.
There are five main catalogues sent home with students according to their year level.
WOMBAT - Pre School & Prep
LUCKY - Prep/Grades One/Two
ARROW - Grades Three/ Four
STAR - Grades Five/Six
Sometimes there is an additional special catalogue throughout the year suitable for all ages.
By participating in this Book Club our school benefits by receiving useful teaching materials, free posters and
books for the use of both students and teachers.
Catalogues have been distributed to students this week. If you would like your child to make a purchase, simply complete the
coupon on the back page of the catalogue and return it to the school, with the correct payment in a sealed envelope which is
marked “Book Club” and includes their name and grade.
Method of payment can be by cash, cheque or the credit card option on the order form. Please follow the phone instructions
as per form and ensure you complete all required details on that section and return to school.
AT NO TIME IS THERE ANY OBLIGATION TO PURCHASE.
If you require any further information regarding the Book Club please inquire at the school Library. Arrangements can be made
if you require the purchase as a “surprise” gift at any time throughout the year.
Orders for this first issue close on FRIDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2014. Delivery takes approximately 1to 2 weeks from the closing
date.

LIBRARY NEWS
All students attend a Library session each week with their class teacher. During this time, students in Prep to
Grade 3 have the opportunity of borrowing up to 3 books to take home. Loan duration is 2 weeks but these can be
returned or renewed at anytime.
Students in Grades 4 to 6 may borrow 3 personal choice books and 1 class literature book set by their Teacher.
Loan duration is 4 weeks.
Some titles may be in high demand so the loan period may only be one week.
Please ensure your child, if in Prep to Grade 4 inclusive, has a library bag, preferably a waterproof one and labelled
with their name. A recycled strong plastic shopping bag is quite suitable.
Due to a large number of damaged library books, mainly caused from spilt drinks in school bags, we will be enforc-
ing the rule that a bag is required if borrowing.
Occasionally accidents happen and books are damaged. If damage does occur, please do not repair it. Specific mate-
rials are used for specific mending. Please advise Library staff of the damage so that appropriate repairs can be
made. Students will not be growled at for accidental damage.
If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, the school’s expectation is for payment be made to replace such items.
The Library is open before school at 8.30am and after school till 3.15 pm for students to borrow.
We welcome parents to visit the Library with their children during these times.
We have a small Parent Reference section dealing with topics related to Sex Education, Raising children, Death of
family and pets which parents are welcome to borrow from.
Thank you for your support and happy reading!
