It may be active at any time of the day or year, searching for prey on long summer days and sometimes on long winter nights. Because the hairs of its waterproof coat are hollow, they both hold in heat and increase its buoyancy( 浮力；浮性 ) when swimming. It’s a four-footed land animal and an excellent swimmer. It eats mainly young seals and Walruses( 海象 ) ， living in Arctic Canada and Alaska.

It is the biggest and most powerful North American wildcat, with brown spots outlined in black and a white belly, and the only one that roars. Unlike most cats, it is very fond of water, and delights in playing in shallow pools on hot days. This species has incredibly powerful jaws( 颌，颚 ) and is much stronger than the Mountain Lion; it can haul a full-grown cow for a mile or more. Although a great traveler, it has been seen only rarely in recent times in the U.S., where it is an endangered species. It still survives in Mexico and southward.
