Lions’ Citizen of the Year

Vaughan Herrick

Congratulations to Vaughan Herrick, who was announced as the Lions’ citizen of the year for 2017. Vaughan is a quiet unassuming member of our community, but one who does so much. He has been very involved with the swimming pool over many years and earlier this year was awarded Life Membership in appreciation for all the

work he has done.

Vaughan is a member of the CFA and has also been awarded Life Membership of that organisation. The CERT team is another of his areas of service to the community.

Several years ago, when Vaughan was celebrating a special birthday, some locals got together and surprised him at a CFA meeting with a cake and gift “from many members of our community, to not only wish him a happy birthday, but to thank him for the never ending commitment and dedication he

shows to our town and the organisations within.” Vaughan has now been recognised by the Lions, for his service to our community, and received his Citizen of the Year award at the Lions change-over dinner held this week.

Vaughan at the launch of the

Historical Society’s book “The First Township at Pyramid Hill”.

Vaughan’s ancestors were some of the early settlers of Pyramid Hill.

Correction

Last week it was reported that Colleen Hampson was a judge in the public speaking, but it was Colleen Gunther who did the splendid job of judging, so we are very sorry for this mistake and thank her for her efforts.

Week 15

In the last round of the regular season, Red were up against Purple with Red needing a win to ensure they finished on top of the ladder. This extra motivation proved the

difference, as Purple didn't have a lot to play for as their position on the ladder wasn't

likely to change, Purple were close at every change but Red held their intensity and

comfortably won. Final score Red 35 - Purple 22

In the late game, Green had one last opportunity to get on the winner’s list but unfortunately came up against a Pink team, hitting form at the right end of the season. Green simply didn't have any answers for Pink’s quick ball movement and accuracy around the goal ring. Green kept trying but couldn't cause an upset, Pink running out winners. Final score Pink 34 - Green 14

This brings Green’s campaign to an end and we hope they had an enjoyable time. We look forward to seeing them back next

Pyramid Hill Website A reminder to provide your business details to be part of the new website .The cost of a yearly space on this website will be $50, so if you would like to be a part of this exciting development for our town would you kindly provide your details to Michelle Miller, with a cheque made out to “Pyramid Hill

Progress Association”. Please email details to [email protected]. Or fill in the form available at the Newsagency.

What are your memories?

The year was 1995. What was happening in Pyramid Hill at that time? It was the year that Pyramid joined the Loddon Valley Football League. The year that the Pyramid Hill Bush Nursing Hospital closed. It was also the year that a bit of Hollywood came to our town and filming of the Road to Nhill commenced. What are your memories? During the harvest of ’95, the driver of a grain truck was to pick up a part at Pyramid Tyre & Auto. However, as a scene was being filmed, it was a case of tools down at the garage. To fill in time during filming, these locals had an ice cream and watched the filming from the sidelines which the production team thought would be a good background scene. Alas, there ends the moment of fame as the footage never made it to the movie.

The Hall committee would love to know your memories. Perhaps you were an extra in the film in the Church scene. Maybe your home was used in the filming. You may have even gone to the cinema when the movie was launched. We’d love to know, so we can publish in the Press to generate interest in the movie. It would also help those of us who were living away at the time, or who have moved to Pyramid Hill post ’95 or for the whole generation that weren’t born, to get a feel for the movie that was made in our town. So feel free to email your thoughts to [email protected] or alternatively write down your thoughts and pop in the Mann residence letterbox at 39 Ottrey St.

Seniors

Another fun day at Friday’s Games Day. Trevor, June, Peg & Bill Sheppard (from East Loddon Seniors) played Crib, others had a go at carpet bowls, Snakes & Ladders, but 9 of us (including my 3and a half year old grandson, who knows his numbers and colours), played UNO. It was just about impossible to win a game, but lots of laughs along the way. A nice cuppa and afternoon tea followed. This Friday, 30th June, is a BBQ lunch—

please bring a small salad and sweets to share. Cost $5 and expect some fun. Expressions of interest for a Maldon/Castlemaine day trip. Names to Peg or Bernie please. Cost at this stage, approx. $50 for train and tour of old gaol etc. Club Birthday on the 21stJuly—more later. Cards at Cohuna on 21st—Kate Woods was the ladies winner—yahoo to her, after all those weeks, well done. At home on 22nd—5 played (still some away). Trevor won 2, Peg 2 and Jess 1

Heaps of Birthdays this month—July 1st is Kevin Jackman, 2nd Rob Stone, 8th Mabel Leed, 10th Johannes, 14th Hilly Allen, 20th Nola Newstead and 22nd Trevor and a couple more later in the month. Happy Birthday to them all and anyone else. AGM coming up in August—some new faces with new ideas would be nice. Stay well, stay safe

Thank You to the Pyramid Hill

Community On behalf of Michael (Charlie), myself, Shirley and Amber, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Pyramid Hill for the wonderful years that we have shared and the friendships that we have made.

It is with much sadness and excitement that we are moving on to greener pastures (Mandurah W.A.) and new horizons so that we can be closer to our children and grandchildren. Michael is moving to a Retirement Home in Bendigo (Lilley Lodge, Long Gully) to be closer to family.

Michael and family would like to thank the Hostel for the care over the last twelve months, and friends and neighbours for their help and support after the passing of Margaret.

It will be a sad day, as an era ends, as we will be the last Ervins to leave the Pyramid Hill area after over 100 years.

Thank you

The sun once again shone for The Biggest Morning Tea, a relief after the few cold/foggy morning we have been having!

There was a great turnout with a few more people than last year, which was great to see. Everyone enjoyed a cuppa, some scrumptious morning tea and the chance to catch up for a chat.

Thanks to everyone’s generosity we raised $800, with a little bit of money still coming in, beating last year’s total of $780!!! A great effort!

Events like this don’t just happen, there are many people to thank - those who kindly brought a plate of food, our great suppliers who donated the prizes for the raffle and everyone who turned up and/or donated money— thank you all.

Thought for the Week: Children need love, especially when they do not deserve it.

Pyramid Hill members continue to represent the club at local tourna-ments with Glen Bartels and Tony “shark” Mullins having a win at Calivil last Friday. This week our closest neighbour Mitiamo, is hosting their annual tournament Our own Annual tournament is only 6 weeks away and despite the fact the golf course and surrounding “Hill” area has never looked better manicured, there is always the next job to be done when maintaining an area spanning greater than 70 acres. On the to do list; mowing tees and around greens, trimming back trees and picking up sticks under tree lines and preparing the sandscrapes for play each week. A new feature of the golf notes will be the Rule of the week. To get things under way we will address 2 rules this week. One for Trum Rule 27-1c Ball not found if a ball is lost a player must play a ball under penalty of one stroke from as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was played. One for the President Rule 13 Ball played as it Lies 13-2 Improving Lie, Area of Intended Stance or

Swing or Line of Play A player must not improve or allow to be improved *the position or lie of his ball by any of the following actions # pressing a club on the ground # moving bending or breaking anything growing or fixed. i.e. pressing down long grass around the ball.

The Pyramid Hill Golf club is run by volunteer labour. Any members of the community that wish to lend a hand with some mowing (equipment and fuel provided) cleaning up sticks under trees or handyman work can contact the President Glen Bartels.

Golf Report 2017 Club Champions

Don Stewart and Kate Bartels are the 2017 club champions. Don enjoyed a comfortable margin in the men’s, ending a 20-year hiatus from the club’s honour board. The ladies however was a much tighter affair with only 2 shots separating Kate and a tenacious Sue Amos with 3 holes left to play. Unfortunately for Sue an errant tee shot on the 16th afforded a Kate a winning margin which she held onto over the last 2 holes. In the men’s B grade, leader going into the last round Rob Ervin, managed to extend his lead to run away with a 6-shot victory from Tony Mullins. John Kennedy stormed to victory in the B grade 54-hole handicap. John’s last round 64 net gave him a combined total of 209 almost chasing down Don Stewart (206) for the NDGA medal. A field of 26, the most for many a year, included new golfers Kelvin Matthews, Peter Matthews, Chris Leerson, Gav Kerr, Peter Gargan, Davo Mann and Julie Boyer. The club extends a warm welcome to not only these players, but other members of the community who wish to take up the game. Results from last Sunday’s play saw Ted Carmody prove that his recent win in the 1st medal round was no fluke, recording a solid 84-15-69 to claim A grade. As mentioned earlier John Kennedy had the round of the day to take out B Grade 92-28-64. Ladies winner Sue Amos 96-17-79

A large crowd more than 40 people stayed on to enjoy a BBQ tea after the day’s round. A big thank you to all the people who bought a salad along and special mention to local Butcher Paul Walters, for organising the meat and bread. This week we will be farewelling one of our most popular members, Rob Ervin, with a bonfire, pizza and chips night. Even if you can’t make golf on Sunday please come on out to the “Hill” and share a story with Bert before he makes the journey across to the West to settle into retired life. With the huge interest from new players wishing to take up the game, we are in need of bag buggy and sticks for our new golfers if you have some sitting around that are no longer required please drop them off at the golf cart shed.

Pyramid vs Marong

A GRADE

The Pyramid Hill girls came out strong setting up a good lead at quarter time. They continued to drive the ball down the court feeding well to the goalers. A good defensive game by all players to take out the win. Pyramid Hill 64 d. Marong 31

Best – Emily Prout

B GRADE

What a ripper! The girls came out hard gaining a 12 goal lead at quarter time; and they didn’t stop there, keeping Marong under 5 goals per quarter with fantastic defensive pressure all over the court. Defenders did a great job and attackers made the most of every turnover. An excellent game and win by all. Marong 71 d. Pyramid Hill 21

Best – Megan Gunther

C GRADE

After a strong win in round 3 against Marong the girls set out for another win. The girls had a shaky start in the first quarter but soon found momentum leading at every break. Marong continued their pressure making it a challenging game for Pyramid. With a few changes at both ends in the last quarter the girls managed to hold on for a 16 goal win. Marong 45 d. Pyramid Hill 29

Best – Jess Zimmer

C RESERVE

It was a cold morning, we struggled to keep warm. Marong came out strong with a few technical plays. It was goal for goal for the first half, with Pyramid up by 2 goals at half time.

15 & UNDER

Warmed up and ready to play, the girls took to the court with a positive mindset. During the first quarter the girls worked beautifully together as a team, putting what they’d learnt at training into practice. The girls took coach Karlee’s wise words onboard at half time and came out firing, with strong leads, lots of talk and an impressive amount of intercepts. The girls kept it up until the final whistle and finished the game with smiling faces and a comfortable win under their belt. Pyramid Hill 70 d. Marong 13

Best – Amy Murfitt

MINIS

A sunny morning for the girls to play. Marong presented well, having their say. Midway through, we had injuries visit us. Quick changing of the bibs, the coaches made little fuss. A very even game. Best – Kaitlin Broad

The third quarter we struggled and started to tire. We dropped 8 goals in that quarter. Tylah and Tamika worked brilliantly together in defensive as the girls fought back to only go down by 3 goals. Marong 37 d. Pyramid Hill 34

Best – Tylah Thomas

17 & UNDER

The doggies were fired up for their game this Saturday, ready to win against the team who gave us our first win earlier in the season. With a good start scoring a quick first goal the doggies were obviously ready to play! However, little did we know so were Marong. They were able to quickly create goals from our mistakes and pretty quickly took the lead. The rest of the game was full of determined netballers fighting for the ball however doggies sadly just kept coming off second best. A good fight till the end girls; keep going our determination will pay off soon! Marong 38 d. Pyramid Hill 30

Best – Julia Fernandez

Football Club A glorious day at Mitchell Park had everyone primed for a great day of football and netball and things were looking up for the Bulldogs until, unfortunately, a collision between two players left a Marong player injured and the Reserves game was called off just before 1/2 time resulting in a draw. We hope he is ok and wish him a speedy recovery. Both U/18s and Seniors went on to record big wins for the day.

Under 18s

With our injury/unavailability list continuing to increase the boys knew they would have their work cut out against Marong. The first quarter was a fierce battle, we had more of the footy but struggled to hit targets inside forward 50, hence only leading by 2 points at the first change. As the game wore on we managed to find our groove and move the ball with great precision. Our tackling pressure increased and we were rewarded on the scoreboard. Adam Dwyer and Glen James were terrific clearing the ball out of the middle whilst the 'play of the day' went to the one and only Khang Nguyen who kicked his first ever career goal, and the celebrations for this historic moment are still going now... Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 11.4.70 defeated Marong 2.1.13

Goals: X. Ryan 3, J. Ryan 3, B. Pickersgill 2, E. Caburnay 1, J. Hilson 1, K. Nguyen 1. Brad Peters Award: A. Dwyer. Brett Hercus Transport Award: X. Ryan. Millers Ag Award: G. James. Pyramid Bakery Cafe Award: J. Ryan. Special Award: K. Shelley, H. Webb. Others: R. Attard, J. Hyatt, K. Nguyen, B. Pickersgill.

Reserves The boys were out for redemption as last time we lost by 2 points against Marong. Credit to the boys we kicked 8 goals to 0 in the first half but sadly the game was called off due to a Marong player being injured, we wish him all the best, the game was then called a draw. Better players for the day were, Chris "fisty cuffs" Driscoll who had about 40 possessions on the wing, Levi "the slippery snake" was let off the leash and played an attacking game off the back flank, Jack "ginger ninja" Woodward could not be tackled and set up some important goals. Scores when game was called off: Pyramid Hill 8.6.54 to Marong 0.2.2

Goals: A. Demeo 2, J. Woodward 1, T. Woolhouse 1, M. Scott 1, K. Kerrison 1, S. Mann 1, C. Driscoll 1. Egan Taylor Award: C. Driscoll. Pony Award: S. Mann. National Hotel Award: L. Southern. Victoria Hotel Award: M. Scott. Others: J. Woodward, N. Moon, D. Mann, T. Woolhouse, K. Kerrison.

Seniors The boys knew they needed to bounce back from a disappointing three week block and that we did. From a 4 goal buffer at the first change, the Doggies continued to increase the margin at every change; 68 points at half time, 113 at three quarter time before the final margin reached 127. Steve Gunther and the ever reliable Billy Micevski were terrific winning the ball out of the middle, giving our forwards a great opportunity to compete one-on-

one. Let's hope this can be the springboard for the remainder of our season!

Final Scores: Pyramid Hill 25.10.160 defeated Marong 5.3.33

Goals: J. McGrath 4, B. Micevski 4, A. McErvale, 4, S. Gallagher 4, M. Bateman 3, M. Dingwall 1, A. Dobby 1, N. Fitzpatrick 1, S. Gunther 1, G. James 1, D Rendell 1.

Egan Taylor Award: S. Gunther. Victoria Hotel Award: B. Micevski. National Hotel Award: M. Klein-

Breteler. Others: A. McErvale, G. James, S. Gallagher, R. Watson. Our thanks this week go to Leigh Forster and George Godward who are the driving force behind the wood cutting. Leigh is instrumental in organising a team of volunteers who give up their Sundays to spend many hours cutting and delivering wood around the district to raise funds. This is another example of the "behind the scenes work" carried out by volunteers to enable us to keep our club running. Volunteers are the backbone of our club and we thank them for their hard work and commitment.

We also congratulate Troy Woolhouse who represented Pyramid Football/Netball club and braved the cold last week to jump into the ice cold water at Campbells Creek in support of MND. Thanks to those who donated money, to Fitzy who coordinated the fundraising and lastly to Wooley, we hope you have stopped shivering!
