whether in calibrating solutions orhigh purity water. The pHaser refer-ence electrode is unaffected by theconductivity changes that occurwhen the sensor is moved betweencalibration buffers and low conduc-tivity water, it continues to producethe same potential. This flowing ref-erence electrode uses a laser drilledcapillary for the liquid junction, thepHaser reference junction. The laserdrilled capillary design is immuneto drift caused by the long termplugging common to all ceramicreference junctions.
These features combined with therapid response and stability of theAccuGlass™ pH electrode providesan unsurpassed level of perform-ance in high purity water.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
A drinking water plant takes raw water from a lake, river, or well and treats it to kill or deactivateharmful microorganisms.
Continuous analyzers monitor the process.Turbidimeters measure water clarity, which is agood indicator of filter performance. Free chlorine, chloramine, or total chlorine sensors measuredisinfection residuals, allowing plant operators tocalculate the CT values used to measuredisinfection effectiveness. Chlorine or ozonesensors monitor primary disinfectant levels. pHsensors measure the acidic or basic nature of thewater, which is important in the CT calculation. The pH also gives an indirect indication of thecorrosiveness of the product water.

Wastewater is generated by homes, businesses, and industries and is treated in two major steps, primary and secondary treatment, with disposalof solids during both steps. Analyticalmeasurements such as pH and ORP areperformed during the primary treatment stagein order to monitor the removal of solids fromthe wastewater.
Secondary treatment relies upon biologicalprocesses to further purify the wastewater, andmaintaining proper dissolved oxygen (DO) levelsis critical to this process. The DO sensor Model499ADO is the perfect choice for maintaining theproper amount of oxygen required bymicroorganisms during biological processes.
Final treatment consists of chlorination anddechlorination and uses the Model 499ACLchlorine sensor. The final effluent is monitoredfor compliance and reporting purposes, and caninclude pH, turbidity and chlorine measurements.

There are many processing steps used to turnwood into paper products. In chemical pulping, strong liquors are used to delignify the woodchips, and the spent liquors are constantly beingcollected and regenerated. Conductivity meas-urement is used to monitor the strength of theseliquors and control the pulping process. Thepulp slurry undergoes bleaching, blending, andrefining prior to being run in the paper machine.pH control during these stages is essential forconsistent quality. Emerson’s pH and conductivi-ty devices are used in these challenging applica-tions to obtain these benefits with a minimum ofroutine maintenance.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Desalination
As world potable water supplies become scarcer, utilities and governments are increasingly turningto desalination of ocean and brackish water tomeet growing demand. There are two basicdesalination technologies: thermal distillation andmembrane separation (reverse osmosis). Bothmethods extract fresh water from the salty watersource, leaving behind even saltier wastewater.Pretreatment of the raw water to control scalingand fouling and, in the case of thermal distillation,to control corrosion is an important part of thedesalination process.

Conductivity is perhaps the most importantprocess measurement in a desalination plant.Conductivity sensors are reliable and inexpensive, and they provide a continuous measurement ofthe concentration of dissolved salts in the productwater. Other measurements are pH, chlorine, andturbidity. Chlorine and turbidity are used primarilyto check that the product water meets local pub-lic health standards.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Conductivity is a critical measurement forWater-for-Injection (WFI). Conductivitymeasurements must adhere to the latest USPguidelines. Sensors need to be calibrated toNIST standards and have surface finishes < 16Ra. The Model 403 sensor meets theseguidelines. Conductivity transmitters mustprovide alarms for raw, uncompensated con-ductivity based on the water temperature. The Model 1055 has the latest USP tablesprogrammed into it, listing acceptable con-ductivity level vs. temperature.
Dissolved Oxygen and pH are two criticalmeasurements in the bioreactor. These tightcontrol parameters affect product yields andspeed of reaction. In addition, these sensorsmust withstand steam-in-place (SIP) cleaningsince residual buffer solutions may affect thedrug harvest campaign. The 3800 pH sensorand the Dissolved Oxygen sensor withstandfrequent SIP cleaning cycles, providing highlyaccurate measurements with fast responsetimes.
Pharmaceutical Production
Process piping and vessels used in the foodand beverage industries require periodiccleaning without disassembly (CIP – cleanin place) to remove residue from previousbatches and to sanitize both the processpiping and vessels. Since the variouscleaning solutions used are more conduc-tive than the water used for flushing andfinal rinsing, conductivity can be used tomonitor the various cleaning steps and thefinal rinse.
The cleaning solutions used for CIP are usedfor several cleanings; conductivity can oftenbe used to monitor the strength of thecleaning solutions to indicate the need forreplenishment.
One of the major requirements for sensorsused in CIP applications is that they be sani-tary in design. The Model 245 SanitaryFlow-Through Toroidal Conductivity Sensormounts directly into the cleaning lines viaTri-Clamp flanges.
