The New Route 66 Roadtrip

Illinois towns on Route 66 vie for foreign tourists taking the “Great American Roadtrip”

The honeymooners from Spain spoke limited English, but that didn’t stop Mayor Bob Russell from giving them a

hearty welcome to his community.

“How long have you been here?” Russell asked, posing for a snapshot with the newlyweds by a giant Route 66 mural before moving on to greet a busload of French tourists.”There are visitors on the street all day long,” he said, smiling. “This has brought new life to our community.”

While many small towns across the country are struggling to keep their downtowns afloat, Pontiac and a string of other Illinois communities scattered along the famed Route 66 are enjoying newfound popularity as foreign tourists roll in by rental car, motorcycle and bus.

The visitors come from Armenia and Ukraine with cameras around their necks, road maps in hand and money in their pockets. They tell locals they heard about the highway on international travel programs and read about it in guide books. Some catch an all-night flight to Chicago, skipping the downtown attractions to head out on the “Mother Road.”

“In Europe, it’s very much the epic American road trip,” said Sonny Dudes, a 31-year-old resident of the United Kingdom who pulled a rental car up to a visitor center housed in a restored Texaco gas station in Dwight on a recent afternoon. “It’s the novelty of a bygone era.”

And the homegrown tourism efforts are getting results. Shops in downtown Pontiac, for example, report an 8 percent increase in business over last year. The number of visitors has grown from 6,900 in 2008 to more than 15,000 so far this year, with representation from 84 countries, according to tourism officials.

The foreign interest gratifies boosters such as

John Weiss, a resident of nearby Custer Park who has spent 15 years, he said,

encouraging Route 66 communities to play up their ties to the road for their own survival. Weiss says he has sold more than 10,000 copies of his book, “Traveling the New, Historic Route 66 of Illinois,” many out of the trunk of his car.

“It’s so rewarding,” he said. “They’ll take pictures of our cornfields and our soybeans. They spend thousands of dollars just to come here — it’s their dream.”

The construction of Interstate 55 in Illinois replaced the need for Route 66, and in 1977, the roadway was taken off official state maps. Communities began losing touch with its history. Former attractions turned into storage buildings. Once-bustling gas stations fell into disrepair.

Even so, Route 66 consistently drew throngs of visitors each year, and it remains one of the state’s top tourist attractions, said Jan Kostner, state travel director for Illinois’ Office of Tourism.

Recognizing the untapped market, Joliet tourism officials in 2006 spent $150,000 in state grant money and city funding to create attractions. They added furniture from the 1950s

and ‘60s and Blues Brothers statues to the visitors center at the Joliet Area Historical Museum. A neon sign went up on the Rich & Creamy ice cream parlor along the route’s path.

Joliet leaders posted Route 66 signs, printed maps and renovated a parking lot near the Joliet Correctional Center — made famous in the movie “The Blues Brothers” — where tourists often stopped to take pictures. “They’d been coming through here and we just didn’t have a system for guiding and

directing it,” said Rebecca Barker, media and communications manager for Visit Joliet.

About the same time, Weiss and his late wife, Lenore, approached leaders in communities along the former Route 66 path, encouraging them to showcase historic places such as the two-cell jail in Gardner and the iconic and picturesque Standard Oil Filling Station in Odell.

When a tour group books an overnight stay, Pontiac — population 12,000 — offers a personal greeting from the mayor, a free tour on the “Jolly Trolley” and a complimentary performance of a Route 66 musical by a local acting troupe. Retired foreign language teachers from the high school greet foreign visitors in their native tongues.

Such authentic touches were exactly what John and Donna Zinyk had hoped to experience when they drove last week from Edmonton, Alberta, to Chicago for a Route 66-themed vacation.

“Everything happens at just a fast pace nowadays,” John Zinyk said. “We like to slow down and go back to what we were accustomed to.”

Philippe Eli, 52, was one of those visitors, traveling with 13 other French tourists on Route 66 from California to Chicago by bus. While perusing souvenirs at the gift shop in Pontiac, he was asked what inspired him to choose a Route 66 trip.

His answers, at first, came in list form: “John Wayne.” “’Grapes of Wrath.’” “Henry Fonda.” “We love America more than you think.”

Although Missouri was its birthplace, Oklahoma is probably the most famed location on the route. In 1928, Oklahoma native Andrew Hartley Payne brought pride to the state by winning the “Bunion Derby” — a 3,400-mile race from Los Angeles to New York that spanned much of Route 66. Oklahoma boasts the longest segment of the original Route 66, and several of the road’s most celebrated travelers came from the state, including Woody Guthrie, Will Rogers and the fictional Joad family from John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, which gave the route its most recognized nickname. “66 is the mother road,” Steinbeck wrote, “the road of flight.”

Pop-culture tributes to the Mother Road were (and are) anything but rare. Most famously, Bobby Troup’s song Route 66 advised, “Won’t you get hip to this timely tip/ When you make that California trip/ Get your kicks on Route 66.” From 1960 to 1964, the CBS television series Route 66 followed Tod Stiles and Buz Murdock on their job-hunting travels across America in their Corvette convertible. And although Sal Paradise, Kerouac’s main character in On the Road, only briefly traveled on Route 66 where it intersects Route 6 in Illinois, the road served as a symbol for members of the Beat Generation. In On the Road, Kerouac describes “the beatest characters in the country” swarming the sidewalks in Los Angeles. Among them, Kerouac notes, were the “longhaired brokendown hipsters straight off Route 66 from New York.”

FROM THE EDITORToday, cars need to be all things to all people. They’re all super-safe gas mileage wizards packed with shedloads of the latest interactive technology, remarkable power, and supreme comfort, created with a minimum of damage done to the environment in their building and usage. Never mind the grumblings about them all looking the same; reading about them in the ad copy makes them all sound the same. They’re all driven by supermodels. Half a century ago, Detroit was selling cars, not conversation pits or telecommunications towers. Their advertising reflected this, both in pictures and in words.

Cars have always been pitched as a lifestyle accessory —whether the perfect second car for the little lady in the suburbs, a gateway to glamorous times or a guaranteed ticket for a glovebox full of someone else’s pink slips — but the best ads convinced you that the cars were the lifestyle, or at least announced that lifestyle; everything else that went on around it became the accessory.

This issue is all about those classic cars, the ads that made us fall in love with them and the ways that they are still affecting us today. Today’s ads and cars, like I said before are all the same. Boring boxes of scientifically sound theories that no one really wants to talk about over a martini. Silver is the new white, blue is the new black, the most exciting thing about a car’s front end is if it’s headlights have something like masscara on them. All hope is lost... Or is it?

Today’s lifestyles are changing, demanding new things from these accessories of ours. People want to be seen as being green as well as being powerful. But those classic motivators are still there. Americans like the powerful car, the big SUV, a truck that looks capable of pulling a house off its foundation, something classic and refined. In many ways the retro craze that is sweeping the country is showing up in our cars as well. What is old is new again, and that makes us here at Hemmings very, very, very happy indeed.

‘’Nobody calls us just American Motors,’’ W. Paul Tippett, the former chairman of the American Motors Corporation, was reported to have said. ‘’It’s ‘Struggling American Motors,’ ‘Ailing American Motors’ or ‘Moribund American Motors.’’’

Like the rest of the auto industry, A.M.C. was the product of a series of mergers. But unlike Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, the result was never a company with the power or the cost structure to compete confidently at home or abroad.

Yesterday, A.M.C.’s long struggle to maintain a separate identity apparently ended when the Chrysler Corporation agreed to acquire control of the company from France’s Renault and said it would buy the rest of A.M.C.’s shares. Small Cars and Survival

A maverick company formed in 1954 by the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and the Hudson Motorcar Company, two of the auto industry’s oldest concerns, A.M.C. championed small cars in the age of bigness. The merger allowed the auto maker to struggle on in an era when numerous other American car manufacturers disappeared, including such famous names as Packard, Studebaker and Kaiser.

Indeed, the company prospered at first on the back of the Nash Rambler, a compact that recalled the name of the vehicle Thomas B. Jeffrey built in 1902 at the Kenosha, Wis., factory that is still A.M.C.’s main production plant.

A.M.C. has long been associated with small cars. George Romney, the American Motors president from 1954 until he was elected Governor of Michigan in 1962, ruffled feathers in Detroit by referring to the products of his larger rivals as ‘’gas-guzzling dinosaurs.’’ Through the 1950’s, A.M.C. faced little competition in selling its smaller cars, and during its peak year, 1960, the company captured 7.5 percent of the American market.

The following decade, however, was one of steady decline. By the mid-1960’s, the Ford Falcon and other domestic compacts were eating into A.M.C.’s sales and the invasion of Volkswagen’s fabulously successful ‘’Beetle’’ was in full swing. By the late 1960’s, Japanese manufacturers had begun to penetrate the United States small-car market.

A.M.C. fought back by introducing new compacts, such as the Gremlin; sporty cars, such as the Javelin and AMX, and by attempting to build larger cars. Its most admired strategic coup, however, was the 1970 acquisition of the Kaiser-Jeep Corporation from Kaiser Industries, another wounded veteran of the shakeout in the auto industry after World War II.

Today, the hardy four-wheel-drive Jeep and its variants are

American Motors’ only dependably profitable products, and analysts said they are the main reason for Chrysler’s takeover move. Jeeps generated two-thirds of the company’s revenue in 1985.

‘’Jeep is A.M.C.’s crown jewel,’’ said David Healy, who follows the auto industry for Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc. ‘’Their cars were not competitive.’’ Tie with Renault

A.M.C. had appeared to have won its battle for survival in 1979, when it reported profits of $83.9 million on sales of $3.1 billion. That encouraged Renault to lay out $405 million for a 46 percent stake in the company, in an attempt to create an American marketing base for its own cars.

Since then, the French company has invested another $300 million. But despite the favorable early response to products like the Alliance and the Encore, the models failed to generate enough sales to prevent A.M.C.’s share of the car market from declining to about 1 percent. Since 1980, it has lost more than $800 million, including $91 million last year. The company did report a slight profit in the fourth quarter.

The Renault investment did provide A.M.C. with the funds to modernize its Jeep line with smaller, more efficient models with wider sales appeal. That investment, some analysts believe, is now allowing

Renault to minimize its losses. Even so, the French Government-owned company may have been lucky.

Help From Import Restraints

‘’American Motors would have disappeared without the voluntary restraint agreement on Japanese imports and subsequent large appreciation of the yen,’’ said Ronald Glantz, an analyst with Montgomery Securities in San Francisco who has followed the company since 1969.

The restraint agreement gave A.M.C. the breathing room to survive and Chrysler the space it needed to recover from its own troubles. ‘’Otherwise, American Motors would have had little value, and Chrysler wouldn’t have had the money to buy it,’’ Mr. Glantz said.

Whether or not Chrysler benefits from acquiring A.M.C., Detroit’s more tradition-conscious observers may see the move as a fitting one. The roots of A.M.C. and Chrysler have always been intertwined.

It was Charles W. Nash, the founder of what became Nash-Kelvinator, who lured Walter P. Chrysler into the auto industry in 1912. Mr. Nash, who was then head of G.M.’s Buick division, convinced the 35-year-old Mr. Chrysler to leave the locomotive business - and take a big pay cut - for a job managing Buick production.

Project: Real Simple 12 Month CalendarConcept: Well I had to get my recipies into this book somehow. It also gave me an excuse to write them down, which I had been meaning to do.

1/2 lb chicken liversmilk2 sticks butter1/2 onion, sliced3 cloves garlic, smashed1/4c whiskey (Canadian Club)sprig of thymebay leafsalt and pepper to taste

Let the chicken livers soak in milk for 30-60 minutes while you putter about doing other things. Pat them off and cut off any sinewy bits.

Over medium heat melt half a stick of butter, then add the livers. Baste the livers constantly with the butter from the pan. After a few minutes flip them over and baste some more, then throw in the onion, garlic, thyme, bay leaf and whiskey. Allow to cook down until livers are tender and most of the liquid is gone.

Poke at the livers a bit looking for any left over sinewy bits and deal with them appropriately. Toss the lot of it into the food processor and blend until smooth. Add in the rest of the butter, a little at a time, and keep blending. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then pour into a small loaf pan or ramekins. Top with a piece of thyme, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Allow to come to room temperature before eating. Best made a day or two ahead of time.

Liver and onions are good for you! Didn’t your mother ever tell you that?

1/2 lb ground beef1/2 lb ground veal1/2 lb ground pork1 medium onion2 garlic cloves, sliced1/2 cup water1/4 brandy or cognac1/4 cup dried porcini mushrooms3 celery ribs, chopped2 carrots, chopped2 medium (or 3 small) potatoes, grated1 bay leaf1/4 teaspoon cinnamon1/8 teaspoon garam masala or ground clovessalt & pepper1/8 teaspoon nutmeg1/8 teaspoon allspice3 tablespoons butter2 pie crusts, and tops

Microwave the water to get it hot and steep the mushrooms in the water. After 5 minutes remove the mushrooms from water and chop fine, reserve the water and add the brandy or cognac.

Brown meat with 2 tablespoons butter, onions and garlic. Add in the vegetables and spices. Saute until fragrant, about a minute, and add the mushroom water and cognac. Allow to simmer for about 7-8 minutes. Taste seasoning and adjust as necessary.

Place pie crusts into dishes and season by brushing with some melted butter and pressing black pepper into the crusts. Divide the filling among both dishes and sprinkle the tops with cinnamon. Place the tops of the crusts on the pies, seal the edges and cut 3 thin slits in the top to allow steam to escape.Season the tops of the crusts with a bit more black pepper.

Bake at 350F until golden, 35-40 minutes.

Go ahead, eat like a lumberjack, it is traditional afterall...

Simmer the chicken carcass in the broth with the lemon, thyme and 4 cups of water until the meat starts to fall off the bone. Once it gets to that point pick the remaining meat off the bone and discard the lemon, thyme sprigs, skin and bones.

Dice the leeks, celery and carrots and add to the broth with the meat from the carcass and simmer until the vegetables soften.

Combine the flour, salt, pepper, thyme and baking powder. Add just enough water to form a soft dough. Drop the dough into the simmering soup a tablespoon at a time, leaving some space between them so they don’t stick together.

In small bowl mix together the heavy cream and flour. Try to get out all the lumps, but don’t worry if you don’t. Add a bit of the simmering liquid to the cream mixture, stir it in, and add a bit more. Add the cream mixture to soup pot and simmer for one minute to lightly thicken. Remove from heat, adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, enjoy.

Nothing says love like good chicken soup. Nothing.

In a large sauce pan over medium heat melt 2T butter and saute the onion until soft. Add the rice and, stirring constantly, saute until all you see is a tiny pearl of starch in the center of the grain - the rest of the grain should be translucent. About 1-2 minutes.

In another saucepan warm your broth.

Add two ladles of broth too the rice and cook, stirring constantly until all the broth is absorbed. Repeat until all the broth is gone, or the rice will not absorb any more broth.

About halfway through when you are adding the broth add the chilis, then add the corn with the next broth addition.

Season after the rice has absorbed all the broth, then add in the remaining butter and the shredded cheese.

I swear Risotto is just Italian for “Fantastically Delicious.”

Brown lamb, then put in crockpot with garlic, diced tomato, water and a bit of salt and pepper. Put on high and leave for 6-8 hours.

Char the skin on the eggplant, then roast in a 350F oven until soft. Allow to cool and collapse a bit. Peel the eggplant and mash.

Make a roux using the butter and flour, whisking well. Allow to get a light butterscotch color and whisk in milk. Allow to thicken then add in eggplant and whisk until smooth. Adjust seasoning with cheese, lemon, paprika, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Serve by spooning some puree in a bowl, then top with lamb. As an option top with fresh feta cheese and parsley.

Is there really anything more delicious than falling apart lamb?

1 egg yolk1/2tsp salt1/2tsp dried mustard1/2 tsp black pepper2 pinches sugar2tsp fresh lemon juice1T cider vinegar1c mild flavored oil, like canola

Whisk for all your life the yolk, salt, mustard, pepper and sugar until the yolk lightens in color.

Whisk in 1tsp of the lemon juice and 1/2T of cider vinegar. Keep whisking until it is incorporated and the emulsion starts.

Slowly add a few drops of oil into the mix, while still whisking. Whisk till you no longer see oil. Repeat. Repeat again. Repeat again until you’ve gone through about half the oil.

Slowly add the remaining oil in a slow steady stream while still whisking. Do not stop whisking or you will lose the emulsion.

Whisk in the remaining lemon juice and vinegar, then let the mix sit at room temp for about 30-60 minutes, covered of course, to get itself back together after all the abuse.

Mayo, it wins over Miracle-Whip everytime. Try it.

Combine everything but the spices and corn in a large pan, bring to a simmer and simmer 5 minutes covered.

Add corn and spices and return to a simmer. Simmer uncovered 5 minutes.

Pack into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4” headspace. Boil 10 minutes in a hot water bath.

Makes about 8 pints

Tomato salsas get all the attention and love, but try this corn version.

Whisk everything but the Ahi and the lemon slices in a medium bowl well.Gently mix in the Ahi. Adjust the heat level as desired.

2 cups All Purpose Flour2tsp Baking Powder2tbsp sugar, additional for sprinkling if desiredpinch of salt (1/2tsp if using unsalted butter)8oz good butter, cold, cubed1cup heavy cream, cold2 Peaches, diced

Heat the oven to 400F

Whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.

Add in the butter and with just the tips of your fingers pinch it into the flour until you get a cornmeal type texture. Don’t worry if you still have some large lumps as long as most of it seems to be the right texture. Don’t over work it, if it starts to feel room temperature instead of slightly cool then you’ve gone too long. The trick to scones is not to let the butter melt, but get it into tiny little balls covered with flour - this is what makes them flaky. It is also the trick for good biscuits and pie crust.

Gently stir in the cream to form a rough dough, then fold in the peaches.

On a lightly greased cookie sheet place one heaping soup spoon of dough and roughly shape it with your hands, sprinkle the tops lightly with sugar if desired. Leave about an inch and a half between scones. Bake until lightly browned on the top and bottoms, about 10-15 minutes.

Fresh Peach Scones

3 moderate sized sweet potatoes 2T honey7oz whole milk ricotta cheese2tsp salt1/4tsp nutmeg1c all purpose flourolive oil, optional

Prick the sweet potatoes all over and bake at 350F until tender. Allow to cool and refrigerate overnight. (IMPORTANT! If you don’t do this your dough might be too moist and require so much flour they lose the sweet potato flavor.)

Peel and chop sweet potatoes and throw in your mixing bowl. Mash them with a vengeance. Add in everything but the flour, adjusting the salt to taste. Mix in the flour, 1/3c at a time until a soft dough forms, kinda like playdough.

Dust your counter top with flour and take a handful of the dough and using your best kindergarten skills roll it into a rope about a 1/4” thick. The dough is sticky, so it might take a bit more flour if your rope is sticking to the counter and your hands rather than making itself into a nice log. Be patient and you’ll get it. Once you have a rope, cut it into 1/2” long pieces and set aside. Repeat until you are out of dough This will take a while.

Get a pot of salted water boiling on the stove, and lay out every cookie sheet you own. Line the cookie sheets with paper towels. Once the water is boiling cook the gnocchi in batches. They will only take a couple of minutes. As soon as the gnocchi float to the top scoop them up with a slotted spoon and let them rest in a single layer on the cookie sheet. If you try one right now it will be nothing but mush. The poor things have been mashed, beaten, rolled and boiled...they need a rest to let them pull themselves together. Repeat until all the gnocchi are cooked.

Gnocchi can bring about world peace, you know they can.
