HAT PARADE Parents and carers are invited to the Easter Hat Parade for Preschool to Year 6 students. It will be held on Friday, 11th April commencing at 9.45 am under the Oval COLA. Please help your child make a special effort to turn an old hat into a new one or decorate a hat for this occasion keeping in mind the Easter theme. Younger brothers and sisters are invited to join in some dances under the supervision of parents. Students will be involved in a dance routine and students are permitted to wear casual dress for the occasion. It is rumoured that the Easter Bunny may make an appearance. Following the parade, the P & C will have morning tea available for purchase and the lamingtons/hot cross bun orders may be collected from the school hall.

FROM THE RELIEVING PRINCIPAL

HOLIDAYS I hope everyone braved the cold and have enjoyed the beautiful blue skies and made some wonderful family memories over the break. We have been getting ready for the term over the break and have a very busy term ahead. We start with Stage 3 participating in a Rivers Sporting Challenge competing with other Lismore schools across 4 different sports over 3 weeks. We then have a very busy week 3 with Education Week full of many activities including our Careers Expo and Book Week Parade. Check out the calendar for more details. NEW PRINCIPAL UPDATE Great News! Nicole Bartlett has been successful in obtaining the Principal position here at Lismore South. She will start in week 6 allowing time for transition arrangements at Rosebank PS. We are very excited for Nicole and will support and welcome her to the role. This will mean Ms Coyle will return to KC in week 7. In the meantime the position for the Assistant Principal (Stage 2P) will begin the merit selection process with the hope the successful applicant will start around the same time. I will certainly keep you updated. PBL REWARD DAY As you know, we had to postpone the reward day due to technical issues at the pool. As a result of these ongoing issues, we have changed the activity to a movie at the cinema. We have rescheduled the day to Friday 25th next week. A note will be sent home soon. Please make sure it is returned by Friday to confirm bookings. FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS On Monday next week, we will have a group of student teachers from Southern Cross University providing our students with a fundamental movement skills program. Each stage will attend a different session. It should be a lot of fun! EDUCATION WEEK Week 3, commencing 28th July, is a very busy Education Week. Full details will be in next week’s newsletter. Our Book Week parade is on Tuesday with the theme ‘Connect to Reading’. Time to get costumes ready! A Book Fair will be held in the Library from Monday to Thursday. The Athletics Carnival is on Wednesday. All students and staff will be at Riverview Park. No students will be left at school. The Careers Day is organised for Thursday.

PRESCHOOL The preschool has been undergoing an assessment and rating process aimed at qualifying the preschool against National Quality Standards. This confirms that Lismore South Preschool is providing a service within national guidelines. Ms Mel and Ms Bec will be discussing and explaining this process to interested families Monday 21st July (wk2) at 3:15pm in the preschool. All are welcome. SCRIPTURE There are members of the community who feel uninformed about their choices for scripture time. I am including a small description from each of the denominations offered here at Lismore South. If after reading this information you would like to change the scripture group your child participates in, please contact the school and let us know.

Justine Coyle, Relieving Principal

CHRISTIAN SRE – COMBINED CHRISTIAN CHURCHES OF LISMORE Students explore Christian Scriptures and core Christian beliefs such as the attitudes, ethics and morals as described by Jesus. In addition we examine how the teachings of Jesus call us to make good life choices in our relationships. Further information is available in a brochure available at the school office.

Roy Cowin – Co-ordinator THE BENEFITS OF CATHOLIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN STATE SCHOOLS Students are encouraged to see themselves as God sees them – inherently good, full of potential and capable of being a force for good in our world. We encourage the children to pray and so develop a relationship with Jesus, to provide a framework to help them make moral choices that are life-giving for themselves and others. We help them to understand and to follow Jesus’ commandment :- to love God and to love others, too.

Colleen Oaten Lismore Catholic Parish SRE Co-ordinator.

BAHA’I EDUCATION IN STATE SCHOOLS Baha’i is the Scripture Class that does not indoctrinate but teaches moral and spiritual values and virtues. Core teachings are from the Baha’i writings and focus on the 3 “Onenessess”: Unity of God, Religion, People and on World Peace. Enquiries: Judith Light (6624 1926) [email protected]

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA THIS WEEK Schools across Australia are taking part in a new national data collection on school students who have been identified as requiring or benefiting from an extra adjustment to meet their learning, social, environmental, physical or behavioural needs. This adjustment has been put under the heading of students with disability. Some students have a diagnosed disability but require no extra adjustment. Some students have no diagnosis but both the parent and school assess that the student needs further adjustments made to suit their needs. An adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with a disability participate in education on the same basis as other students. The data collection is being introduced in stages over three years, and started in 2013. From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australia, every year. All Australian governments have agreed to this. All Australian governments agree that every child in an Australian school should have a high quality education. It shouldn’t matter what the individual child’s circumstances are – every child should have the same opportunity to succeed at school. The information provided through this new national data collection will enable all Australian governments to better target support and resources to benefit students with disability. It will help to put the right supports in place for students with disability so that they have the same opportunities for a high quality education as students without a disability. An information letter and an "exclusion" form are being sent home TODAY for those students who, in collaboration with the school, have an adjusted plan. It is hoped that parents will see the benefit to their child and other children, this information will provide.

It’s your decision about whether you want your child’s information to be included in the national reporting or not. Contact the school on 66213433 and ask to speak to Mrs Wright or Mrs Hardy if you have further questions about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability and how it may affect your child.

RIVERS SPORTING CHALLENGE Students in Years 4, 5 and 6, who nominated for the Rivers Sporting Challenge, have been given a separate note today. Please complete and return permission note TOMORROW. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been given a separate note today. EVERY CHILD must return a signed note by FRIDAY, 25th July. CLASS DOJO Class Dojo is a new teacher tool that our classroom teachers will be using to help build your student’s learning habits and boost classroom engagement. Class Dojo allows us to track student behaviour and learning skills throughout the day. One of the great features of Class Dojo is that it allows us to send you a “behaviour and skills report” every Friday by email. Our hope is that this will bring us closer together and help you better understand the progress of your student on a week to week basis. Soon you will receive a letter from your child's teacher asking for your email address so that we are able to send you this weekly report.
