Monsters Inside Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYq9gmjmH qM How
do we protect against pathogens??
1st line of defense: skin/mucous membranes Non-specific 2nd line of
defense: WBC (white blood cells) that killwhatever is around them
Ex. macrophages, dendritic cells 3rd line of defense: WBC that
target specific pathogens T cells/ B cells Specific But is the
immune system perfect?
What can go wrong? Allergies- Examples? *Allergy = when the immune
system overreacts to anon-harmful substance (ex. pollen, dog fur,
etc.) Autoimmune disease Examples? *Autoimmunity = when the immune
system turns onitself (auto means self) Common Autoimmune
Disease?
AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coGWYHmsF 1w How are disease
passed? *Transmission = passing of disease
Airborne particles move through the air, areinhaled by a host
Fecal-oral microorganisms growing in feces aretransported to mouth
(due to lack of hand washing!) Body fluids saliva, blood, semen,
breast milk Fluid Exchange Activity
Directions: I will come around and hand you a test tube. Donot fool
around with it, do not touch or drink theliquid, etc. In your
notebook, set up a chart thatlooks like this: Record your numberin
the initial column Test tube # Initial Round 1 Round 2 Results
Directions On my go, find a person nearby and swap fluid with
them.
You will swap fluid by 1) Completely dumping the contents of one
test tubeinto another 2) Putting the entire contents back into the
first testtube 3) Then splitting the solution evenly between
testtubes Demo for the students Round 1 Find a person nearby and
switch fluids with themas just demonstrated Record the number of
the test tube you justmixed with in your chart Round 2 Find another
person nearby and switch fluidswith them in the same manner Record
their test tube number in the Round 2column of your graph Go back
to your seat and wait quietly forinstructions What just happened?
So when you first got your tube, this representedyou sitting home
alone on a Friday night justchillin You got bored, and no one
waschecking on you, so you decidedto go on an adventure Round 1
Hence, fluid switch #1
You walked down the street and stumbled upon a houseparty
Curious, you decided to go inside In the house were tons of
teenagers drinking variousconcoctions of different sodas and juices
You see a friendly-looking person and walk over to sayhello They
seem happy to talk to you, and offer you a sip of theirdrink
Without thinking, you smile and take a nice long sip Round 2 Hence,
fluid switch #2
After talking for several minutes with this person, youdecide they
are boring. You politely say goodbye and continue to walk around
thehouse. Sitting on a couch alone, you see an extremely
attractiveperson. With a new boost of courage, you walk over to
sayhello. They smile slyly when you approach, and invite you to
sitdown. After talking for a while, you realize the door isclosed
and you are both in the room alone. Before you know it, you are no
longer talking ;) A couple days later Your annual doctors
appointment is today so youmake your way to the office The doctor
smiles and asks all the usual questionsDo you wear a seatbelt? Do
you use protection?etc. Then the doctor informs you that you are
due forsome tests. This particular test is for a disease that
istransmitted by swapping fluids with another human. Lets find out
your results The results are in I will go around and place a bit of
indicator intoeveryones test tube If your liquid turns BLUE, you
are SAFE (youhave NOT been infected) If your liquid stays clear and
develops a lightyellow color, you are INFECTED Lets see! (Record
your result of SAFE orINFECTED in your chart) Whose fault was it???
I will let you know that THREE of you wereoriginal carriers of the
infection Based on who you swapped fluid with, can youdetermine who
the culprits were?? If you were safe, that may help you or
othersdetermine who passed around the infection! What does it mean?
Compare this simulation with additional real-lifesituations. What
are some other examples? Can you name a real-life infection that is
spreadin this same manner? Be careful who you interact with, and
how! STDs Stands for what? Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Examples?
Gonorrhea Chlamydia Do all organisms reproduce sexually?
No! What is the other kind of reproduction called? Asexual
reproduction Types of Reproduction*
What are they? Sexual Reproduction Makes genetically different
offspring (50% of genes from mom, 50% from dad) Asexual
Reproduction Makes genetically identical offspring (100% of genes
from one parent) Repro Intro Videos Sexual
