PREFACE
There is a well-known saying “knowledge without application is a waste”. So it is very important
to provide with practical knowledge. It’s is easy to study the fundamental of engineering but it is
always difficult to implement them in engineering environment. No doubt classroom study is the
important part of knowledge of the engineering studies, but practical exposure provides some
extra knowledge about the theoretical concept. Instrumentation and control is rightly said to be
the life line of the industry. The large scale industrial production has resulted in widening the
area of instruments. The industry has to depend upon proper instruments and controlling actions
for taking various strategic decisions. Instrumentation and control provide necessary information
to the industry. This industry is made useful by analysis and interpretation of instruments with
the help of controlling elements. It helps industry in planning, co-ordination, communication and
controlling.
I have done my training at Northern Region Pipelines .During the training period I have learnt
about different type of instruments and its application. I have learnt about the automation of the
pipeline system using PLC and SCADA and about its controlling in the T & I Control room. This
report includes the comprehensive study of instruments and its controlling action.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It was a matter of immense pleasure for me to undergo Industrial Training as a part of my
curriculum of B.Tech (Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering) in a Public Unit
like Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Panipat.
I would like to thank Mr. S.K Gautam ,Senior Manager, T&D , NRPL, IOCL, PANIPAT for
giving me an opportunity to learn and experience the environment of IOCL. I would expressmy
sincere thanks to Mr. M.K. Dhiman, Chief Manager ( T&I ) & TSfor accepting me as vocational
trainee at IOCL PANIPAT pipeline. I also take the opportunity to thank Mr. Vinod Kumar,
Manager ( T&I ), who have provided me detailed information and extended full help during the
Training Period.
I would like to thank Ms. Neha Singh,T&I E and Mr. Suresh Kumar , SO & ME, for their
valuable guidance and giving their precious time for giving me valuable information on different
machines being used in NRPL and taking us for field work.
Finally, I would like to express my thanks to all members of IOCL, for accepting me as a
Vocational Trainee in such esteemed organization.
