As the years roll by and our numbers increase, it is gratifying to note how the members fit themselves into various pursuits around the Club. We have often heard the expression— “a member gets out of an organization as much as he puts into it”. How true is that saying of our group.

With so many able and willing hands aiding in every capacity, the members have made the Commodore’s task, at the helm, a pleasant experience and our Club so successful.

The purpose of this book is to inform the membership of our social and sailing schedule of the summer season and to afford the Committee Chairmen an opportunity to give to “all hands” a message of greeting and proposed plans for the ensuing months ahead. Keep a copy of the Year Book on hand— refer to it for things to come.

Without the help of our many advertisers this book could not be the success that it is and has been in the past— so please mention our Club when you patronize their various establishments.

Throughout the winter our various committees have been working diligently to get our Club House in shape, the grounds in good order, and our program of activities arranged to suit everyone, no matter what his temperament or choice of activity might be. Our Financial Committee reports we are in sound shape, the Sailing Committee has again arranged an interesting schedule of inter-Club meets and an “at home” series of races, and our Entertainment Committee has gone

all out to make this a most memorable summer of fun. The very successful Regatta Committee has again arranged for the South Jersey Yacht Racing Association Regatta Championships to be brought to our Club on the week-end of August 25 and 26. The Regatta is jointly sponsored, as in the past, by the borough of Avalon and the Avalon Yacht Club (your Club). This event is the highlight of the summer season — we are honored to serve as host. A hearty welcome to all sailors and members of our neighboring clubs is graciously extended for friendly and spirited competition.

So, fellow members, on behalf of your Flag Officers and Trustees, it is my extreme pleasure and honor, as your Commodore, to extend to you and your guests, a most cordial welcome for the 1956 season.

Glad to have you aboard!EDWIN H. ROBERTS

DATES TO REMEMBER and place on your Social Calendar

June 26— Tuesday— Regular MeetingJuly 18 — Wednesday — Annual Summer Card PartyJuly 24 — Tuesday — Regular MeetingAugust 21 — Tuesday — Election of Officers

As president of the Ladies Auxiliary, I wish to take this opportunity to extend to you, the wives of ourf Yacht Club Members, a most cordial invitation to join our organization. The membership of the Club is continually growing and the Ladies Auxiliary should grow with it. We welcome new people and new ideas. It gives a good feeling of aliveness to any group.

This year will again sponsor the Junior Junior’s and Intermediate Nights. Both of these activities have become very popular during the past years .and since the children are potential members of our Club, we try to interest them while they are young.

Besides our Annual Summer Card Party, and note, I said “summer”, for this past year we tried a Winter Card Party and it was quite successful both socially and financially; we will also plan a Sunday Night Buffet Supper and assist the men when they play host to the sailors at the second half of the South Jersey Yacht Racing Association’s Championship Regatta.

The proceeds from our activities are used to redecorate and refurnish the Club House and we strive to make it as attractive as we possibly can.

May I assure you again that a hearty welcome awaits you at the Ladies Auxiliary and I sincerely hope you will make a special effort to attend our meetings and social activities. Let’s make 1956 one of the best seasons ever.

Chtertaihftteht Report for I9S6

“WHEN YOU’RE SMILING’’ . . . A hearty WELCOME to our members and guests to the 1956 Entertainment Cruise. The splendid, enthusiastic support given by our members to last year’s program, has inspired your Entertainment Committee to plan a schedule that will prove even more interesting and enjoyable.

We got under way with the Club Opening Dance on Saturday, June 2nd, and from that date on events have been planned that we hope will be most happy occasions for all.

During July our annual Masquerade Ball will again present an opportunity for all hands to demonstrate their originality and ingenuity in the fashioning of interesting and colorful costumes. Later in the month our New Year’s Eve Party is scheduled, an event which has in the past been one of the Season highlights.

The program also includes a Gay Nineties Costume Dance in August, as well as the Sailors and Landlubbers Family Clam Bake.

Other interesting events are planned for Friday nights and other nightsduring the season, the dates to be announced early in the summer.

With the usual fine support of our members your Committee feels that your Entertainment Cruise for 1956 will be a memorable and happy one.

And now . . . Back to the Joke Book . . . It seems these two fellas were . . .Better save it . . . might need it during the Cruise. . . .

Regatta Ccmittee

Just after “Fleeting Up”

WM. H. HORN, III A SALUTE TO “BILL” HORN

CHAIRMAN — 1956For the past few years “Bill” Horn has been

one of our most enthusiastic members to sponsor sailing* events and encourage the younger set to “get your boats in the water”. For two years Bill could be found every Saturday and Sunday on the Bridge directing the summer series as Chairman of Sailing. In addition to that he managed the Regattas as a first class yachtsman for Past Commodores Hickman and Dagit. His sportsmanlike attitude, sense of fa ir play, and overall sailing spirit is known to all yachtsmen of the South Jersey Association. With such a record behind him, is it any wonder that Commodore Roberts turned to Bill to “take the helm” for the 1956 New Jersey Moth Championship Regatta to be held at our Club on the week-end of August 25 and 26.

This will be our Club’s sixth Regatta and with each one we have learned much. With Chair

man Horn in command of a great committee, we look forward to this being our best.

At this writing, we sincerely hope that our defending champion “Charlie” Calhoun may secure leave from the Navy to again show the Moths how to cross the finish line.

Regatta week-end! Parties! Eats! Dancing! Retelling stories of the day’s maneuvers — all bring to the minds of the oldsters the work of “B ritt” Palmer, “A rt” Hinkel, Floyd Shockley, “Bill” Calhoun, and scores of others at our club, the plaudits of our guests “Well Done”.

So jump on the Regatta Band Wagon— see Chairman Horn or any member of his committee for a job around the Club House the week-end of August 25 and 26.

When the tide is practically high there may be sufficient water outside the Channel, but after the turn of an hour, contestants must assume the risk of going outside the Channel markers.PROTESTS

Protests must be made in writing to the Race Committee within 30 minutes after the protesting boat finishes the race, or the same may be disregarded.TIME LIMIT

If no boat has completed the course 3 hours after the start, the race will be called, but the Race Committee may cancel the race for cause prior to the expiration of this time limit, and may shorten the course at its discretion.

So many of the Junior and “Junior Junior" groups now come to the Club House that your Board of Trustees has seen fit to add to our Instructor Staff for the 1956 season.

In addition to having our Sailing Instructor — Ken Shockley — back for another season, the Trustees have added two new members to the staff. They are Joe Little and Perry Schaffer. These three young men will be on hand daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except Saturdays and Sundays to guide the activities of the “W ater F ront" crowd.

All sailors or sailors-to-be MUST know how to swim or learn how before taking off in boats. Instructions in swimming can be arranged with the Sailing Master, Ken Shockley.

The 1956 rates for the “Younger Set" follow:1. Boat Rack ........................................................... $ 7.002. Sailing Instructions ............................................ 12.003. Jr. Membership (ages 16 to 20, inclusive) 2.50

(Parents members of the Club)4. Jr. Membership (ages 16 to 20, inclusive) 10.00

(Parents not members of the Club)5. Children under 16 years of a g e ............................ 5.00

(Parents not members of the Club)6. Children under 16 years of a g e ............................... 2.50

(Parents members of the Club)*NOTE*The Club House and Club property is for the exclusive use of members.Parents will please contact the Secretary or the Sailing Instructor for dues cards and iden

tification badges for all children who use Club facilities. All parents are respectfully requested to read the rules and regulations, on the Bulletin Board, regarding the conduct of children in and about the Club and then discuss this topic with the “Younger Set."

Your cooperation in this growing activity will be greatly appreciated by your Flag Officers and the Board of Trustees.

Kuhn, mediates, children 10-14 age group, will continue to meet on Thursday evenings, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., under the direction of Mrs. A rthur J. Branning and Mrs. Milton W. Kuhn.

The Junior Juniors, 3 to 10 age group, will have their special nite on Tuesday evenings, 8:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Since this is a self-supporting group, admission is 25c per child. This entitles them to attend weekly activities and compete in our big finale, the Masque Ball. Children who have participated will be admitted free this nite, their quarters paying for entertainment, refreshments and prizes. Any child who has not attended other activities will be charged 50c admission on this particular night.

We would like to extend a cordial invitation and a hearty welcome to all members, their children and guests. Every club member has the interest of this group at heart, shown by the wonderful response and cooperation we have had. We broke all records with 120 attendance last year. Please feel free to offer suggestions, visit and participate in group activities. Needless, to say, a Club is only as great as the members make it. Avalon Yacht Club speaks for itself to visitors when they see the number of wonderful children we have.

to port.”Three blasts mean, “My engines are going full

signal or the danger signal. It is both dangerous and unlawful to give

“cross signals”; for instance, to give two blasts in answer to one.

GENERALA vessel under power must keep clear of a

vessel under sail alone. If a vessel is under both power and sail, she must, in day time, observe the rules for power vessels, after sundown she carries sailing lights only and has the rights of a sailing vessel.

years ago by the founding fathers to encourage those who are interested in yachting, sportsmanship and good fellowship to join with us in promoting a ll the many activities that are part of an outstanding and successful yacht club.

However, the la rge increase in both Proprietary and Annua l Membership last yea r presents a new problem for the membership committee. Our steady and continued growth must be kept in ba lance with the expansion of our club house and facilities to insure that our members w ill en joy to the fullest extent the benefits of membership in the Avalon Yacht Club.

To accomplish this the membership committee w ill serve with complete cooperation with the Officers, Trustees and a ll other committees to make this season the most p leasant and successful one in our history.

The Membership Committee extends a most cordia l and hospitable welcome to both old and new members and their guests. The Juh/cr IfachtBy J ack P age, Junior Advisory Committee

Welcome to another season, you Junior Yacht Club Members.Last year you were one of the most enthusiastic and active groups of our Club and we

saw an upsurge in membership and crowded attendance at our Friday Night Dances. We are looking forward to the coming season for increased membership and have a very interesting program planned for a fun packed summer.

Your Junior officers, Commodore, Paul Blizard; Vice-Commodore, Joe Little; Rear-Commo- dore, Don Greenhalgh; and supported by Mary Heuisler, Secretary, and Chris Heuisler, Treasurer, also have plans for extra activities and welcome you aboard to join in the fun.

Our Junior Yacht Club is now organized like the Senior group. Every Junior whose parents are members is urged to join and non-members are especially invited to join if sponsored by a Senior member. The age group is 14 to 20, and those who participated last year know the dances are fun and the band terrific. So come aboard and make this the finest season of fun and frolic ever.

The Juhicr Ifacht Club a A £eeh byP atti R oberts

Once again it's time to look forward to another summer. To many of you this is your first summer in Avalon, so we’d like to welcome you and tell you a little about the Junior Yacht Club.

First, I ’m sure that you will have a most enjoyable time if you participate in the many activities of this organization designed for the teenagers.

The “Juniors” is a club of its own. We elect our own officers. Last year’s officers were: Commodore, Ken Shockley; Vice-Commodore, Paul Blizard; Rear Commodore, Danny Walsh; Treasurer, Patti Roberts; Secretary, Louise Dagit.

The officers for this season are: Commodore, Paul Blizard; Vice-Commodore, Joe Little; Rear Commodore, Don Greenhalgh; Treasurer, Chris Heuisler; Secretary, Mary Heuisler.

We plan our own activities for the summer such as Friday Night Dances, Island parties, dances with Stone Harbor and Sea Isle City Yacht Clubs, masquerade parties, moonlight cruises, our annual Commodore’s Ball and many other enjoyable affairs.

The Club House is equipped with almost every facility; and just last summer we added a new item to our list— a juke box.

The Club is a perfect spot for any teenager for there is always something to do. There is swimming, sailing, dancing, card playing, anything to get a laugh or have fun, and just plain old cutting-up or common gab fests.

Activities s ta rt June 22 and we want this summer to be one of the biggest and best for the Junior Yacht Club. Come on out and join the fun. You are welcome anytime and we are always glad to see new faces.

Building Committee deport tfcr 1956The Building Committee is responsible not on ly for repairs

and maintenance of the Yacht C lub and its grounds, but a lso to promote and supervise necessary improvements and add itions to the club house in keeping with a sound program of expansion.

Last year, a P lanning and Steering Committee was ap pointed with Vance C. Boyd as Chairman to formulate a long range program of development for the Yacht Club. Their recommendations have been endorsed by the Officers and Trustees and the first part of this p lan has been undertaken and completed with the addition of a new spacious open porch on the north side of the C lub House.

This porch, with its tables and chairs w ill provide a delightful dining a rea where both senior and junior members m ay en joy lunch under the skies and also a wonderfu l cocktail patio for seniors who m ay wish to en joy the sunset on the b ay while entertaining their guests and friends before dinner.

In addition the concrete pilings under the club house which were bad ly eroded were repa ired and reinforced during the winter months.

The Building Committee is happy to report that the club house and grounds are in excellent condition and we w ill continue to strive for future improvements in keeping with the sound financial policy that has a lw ays marked our growth and progress.

Dear Commodore

Hi Eddie. Congratulations on being Commodore. I know you will make a good one. Keep the place going along until I get back. We will be back June ’57and will pitch in and help out. Don’t letthe Comets disappear.

We have been having a wonderful time at our house in Bitburg, Germany. Just returned from a trip to Spain, French Riviera, Italy and Switzerland. This Service life is reallymaking me lazy; hope I can get back to work when I return.

This summer we will cover Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the rest of Germany. I’m afraidwe won’t get any sailing in. Not enough time or money.

We all send our best to you and dear old A.Y.C.

John Leonard
