E urope's largest four-wheeled self-propelled sprayer made its début appearance at Lamma 2013. The Lite-Trac SS2400/48 has been built for a UK customer and features a 48 metre Pommier aluminium boom and a capacious 8,500 litre tank to ensure the operator can make the most of this high-capacity crop sprayer's outstanding performance. The biggest machine that Lite-Trac have built to date, its development can be traced back over thirty years of spray and spread tractors. The Lite-Trac story started in the mid 1980s when Lite- Trac's founder and Managing Director Paul McAvoy was asked to build a one-off low ground pressure articulated tractor. Sporting four sets of three rubber-duck tyres, it was a curious sight to behold, but it laid the foundations for the first generation of McAvoy tractors. Following its successful deployment, its design was developed into the MAC110 articulated tractor which was fitted with spray packs and spreaders from various manufacturers and manufactured until the mid 1990s. In 1998, spray contractor Greg Wilcox needed a replacement for one of his two MAC110s, and thus developed the specification for the Field Leader sprayer; a high road speed, all-round air suspension, a high specification cab, a 4000 litre minimum tank size and equal payload on all wheels were essential. Over the next two years McAvoy and Wilcox built the prototype on Wilcox's farm and finished in time to exhibit it at Sprays and Sprayers in the year 2000. COMPANY PROFILE The Lite-Trac Story

Unit 0, EdisonCourtyard,Brunel Road,CorbyNN17 4LS Anumber of Field Leader sprayers were built and fitted with

Landquip spray packs, but production ceased prematurelywhen in 2001 John Deere chose to stop supplying outside

companies, including Lite-Trac, with cabs. Up to this point, spraypacks had not been demountable, so the switch from a John Deereto a CNH cab prompted a period of development which ultimatelyresulted in the present configuration of a tool carrying chassis witha 24 tonne gross mass for use with demountable spray packs andspreaders; hence the new model designation SS2400. 2003 sawthe first prototype, and a year later the first sale, a machine fittedwith a 40m Pommier boom.

The SS2400 maintains the design philosophy from the earlierField Leader; it has been specifically designed to meet the needs ofthe large scale arable farmer or contractor who requires an easy tooperate, simple to maintain, high capacity sprayer with a light footprint and the ability to apply low rate chemicals and high rate liquidand suspension fertilisers with equal ease.

“Our aim with the LITE-TRAC SS2400 series, was exclusively,to develop the highest capacity two-axle sprayer and spreaderrange available on the European market,” says McAvoy, “ Ourmachines are extremely versatile and capable of operatingefficiently with the highest payloads, the biggest booms and thelargest tanks, without sacrificing any of the control experiencedwith other, smaller machines.”

The Lite-Trac SS2400 is the only four-wheel, high-capacity cropsprayer built that provides perfectly-even '50/50' weightdistribution between both the front and rear axles, whether

running empty or at full capacity. This owes to the combination of thepatented chassis design, with its mid-mounted modular engine andtransmission units, and the positioning of the stainless steel spray tankcentrally between the axles.

The front and rear axles are located by independently oscillating A-frames that allow the axles to readily follow the ground, which, combined with full time four-wheel drive and the 50/50 weightdistribution make the Lite-Trac's traction peerless; in fact McAvoy citesseveral customers who have been able to continue work spreading orspraying in the recent poor ground conditions when rival machinescould not travel. One operator has even used his Lite-Trac to recoveranother mired spreader tractor.

The springing is achieved with eight airbags which allow ride-heightadjustment, whilst front and rear anti roll bars and eight shockabsorbers ensure the handling is excellent. Not only does this all makefor a comfortable ride for the operator, but it is kind to sprayer boomsand other demountable equipment.

The Lite-Trac driveline consists of a 260hp Cummins engine, coupled to a six-speed Dana power-shift gearbox with a full-lock uptorque converter, and Dana axles. The mechanical driveline is wellsuited to heavy loads and hill climbing, especially in difficult groundconditions where hydrostatic transmissions tend to become boggeddown. Equipped with tyres of over 2 metre diameter, the Lite-Tracpresents a large foot-print, treading lightly and causing minimalcompaction, whilst allowing the chassis to transport payloads of up to14 tonnes.

The Lite-Trac demountable spray pack was a natural product todevelop once the SS2400 chassis was in production, in orderto take full advantage of the chassis' capabilities. From the

drawing board to the field, customers' needs and suggestions havebeen built in to the design meaning that the machine is suited to alltypes of work. Amongst other things, this has resulted robust andsimple plumbing, booms which automatically fold at the touch ofone button, and Lite-Trac's own automatic boom levelling system.

The boom levelling system employs three ultrasonic sensors toconstantly measure the position of the boom relative to the ground, and a highly developed hydraulic control system to allow constant, gentle adjustments to the boom's height. This ensures the boom isalways at the operator's pre-set work height. Coupled with the kindride from the chassis' suspension, the system offers unrivalled boomstability on rolling terrain, the ability to make fast manoeuvreswithout fear of the booms ever touching the ground and peace ofmind for the operator who can concentrate on driving the machinerather than worrying about the boom height.

The spray pack sits on an independent demountable chassisskid which supports everything from the boom to theinduction hopper, and allows for simple removal from the

SS2400 tractor. Tanks sizes from 4500 litres to 8500 litres areavailable with booms from 24 metres to 48 metres. The mosttypical machines are 36m and can be fitted with auxiliaryhydraulically folding sections to allow spraying at 24m with anotherwise standard 18m/36m bi-fold boom; a particularly usefulfeature for contractors.

Lite-Tracs are typically fitted with GPS auto-steering andautomatic section control; indeed on the SS2400/48, the sprayer isfitted with Trimble equipment from AS Communications which notonly steers the tractor, but allows 48 sections to be individuallyswitched for the ultimate in headland and overlap accuracy. An

automatic pre-programmable part-filling feature, allows as little as1000 litres to be loaded, the SS2400's variable rate centrifugalpump (1,380 L/Min) ensuring consistent operating pressure at thenozzles and increased service life.

The most recent offering from Lite-Trac is a joint venture withAgrispread, who have built a spreader specifically to match the Lite-Trac chassis. With it's low profile and centrally positioned hopper, the spreader makes the best of the SS2400's weight distribution forsuperb traction and a light footprint. The spreader is capable ofspreading a wide range of materials including fertiliser, fibre foss, lime and poultry waste. The hopper can hold up to 11.5m3 whenfitted with extension sides and spreading widths of 24m and aboveare achievable at rates of 20kg/Ha to 4t/Ha, subject to theproduct.

Page 6: Lite-Trac Profile 2013

The spreader is compatible with GPS control systems toallow variable rate spreading, and split rear doors andcontrol valves allow spreading to be restricted to one side

on headlands. In common with other Agrispread products, thespreader unit and all nuts, bolts and hydraulic fittings arestainless steel, whilst the hopper is finished in robust two packpaint.

Specifications of the Lite-Trac SS2400/48:• 8500 litre tank capacity• 48 metre Pommier aluminium boom• 1380 litre/min sprayer pumps with variable speed• Automatic boom levelling• Automatic GPS control of 48 sections• Automatic GPS steering• Patented chassis design with 50/50 weight distribution• Michelin AxioBib 650 section tyres• High application speeds (up to 20 km/h)• Capable of 50km/h• Height adjustable air suspension• 260hp Cummins engine• 6 speed power-shift gearbox• Fully mechanical driveline
