Literacy Skills for Teachers

Literacy is fundamental to all learning. It is at the heart of a child's ability to read, write and succeed in school and beyond. Our Literacy training program is designed to equip new and experienced teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to develop and improve literacy skills in children of all backgrounds.

Introduc�on

The objec�ve of this training is to build on each teacher's repertoire of approaches to the teaching of literacy. These should include a balance of skills approaches (including the systema�c teaching of reading, wri�ng, spelling and phonics skills) and whole-language approaches (including the teaching of reading comprehension and grammar).

At the end of this training, Par�cipants will be able;

Ÿ To carry out the integra�on of comprehensive approaches to the teaching of literacy in the curriculum, based on explicit instruc�on that enables children to read and view, speak and listen, write and shape for learning in and out of school.

Ÿ To iden�fy the early indicators of reading and wri�ng disabili�es and develop the skills and strategies to tailor instruc�on so the children can learn to decode and comprehend the material, at their individual level.

Ÿ To explore the socio-cultural factors that affect literacy among children.

Ÿ To Work individually with children, either reaching into or pulling out of the class, and how to work with other teachers on staff development, all while becoming a be�er teacher yourself and gaining competency in dealing with struggling children.

Module One: Comprehension SkillsThis module explores comprehension skills and examines the descrip�ons of each type of comprehension strategy, instruc�onal implica�ons for teaching comprehension, and sample lessons. Although word recogni�on, decoding, and fluency are building blocks of effec�ve reading, the ability to comprehend text is the ul�mate goal of reading instruc�on. Comprehension is a prerequisite for acquiring content knowledge and expressing ideas and opinions through discussion and wri�ng.

Module Two: Spelling Skills This module explores the big misconcep�on that many people think spelling consists of memorizing all the words in a dic�onary and that spelling comes naturally to some and not to others. Good spellers aren't born, they are taught! In fact, there is a strong rela�onship between spelling and word reading, because many of the same abili�es — phonemic awareness, knowledge of le�er pa�erns, an understanding of morphology and word meanings — underlie both reading and spelling. Good spellers make for be�er readers and writers.

Module Three: Grammar SkillsThis module explores how sentences are constructed and how different types of sentences are formed. It shows how to punctuate each type correctly and how to combine different sentence types for effec�ve wri�en communica�on.

Module Four: Crea�ve wri�ng and Essay wri�ng SkillsThis module will explore s�mula�ng, interac�ve and innova�ve ways of producing competent wri�ng, covering the genres of wri�ng for stage and screen, poetry, short stories, children's fic�on, and novels. The module will also cover various approaches to teaching solid essay wri�ng which is a cri�cal skill for teachers.

Module Five: Hand wri�ng SkillsThis module explores how handwri�ng skills are an important developmental task and ac�vity for children. Through handwri�ng they are able to express themselves and communicate with the world around them. Improving their penmanship, legibility, pencil/pen grasp, and working on problem areas are all important things that need to be addressed. However, the wri�ng performance of school-age children is a ma�er of considerable concern. Educators and researchers from around the world have highlighted the challenges children face to master wri�ng.
