Literacy Skills for Teachers Literacy is fundamental to all learning. It is at the heart of a child's ability to read, write and succeed in school and beyond. Our Literacy training program is designed to equip new and experienced teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to develop and improve literacy skills in children of all backgrounds. Introducon The objecve of this training is to build on each teacher's repertoire of approaches to the teaching of literacy. These should include a balance of skills approaches (including the systemac teaching of reading, wring, spelling and phonics skills) and whole- language approaches (including the teaching of reading comprehension and grammar). At the end of this training, Parcipants will be able; Ÿ To carry out the integraon of comprehensive approaches to the teaching of literacy in the curriculum, based on explicit instrucon that enables children to read and view, speak and listen, write and shape for learning in and out of school. Ÿ To idenfy the early indicators of reading and wring disabilies and develop the skills and strategies to tailor instrucon so the children can learn to decode and comprehend the material, at their individual level. Ÿ To explore the socio-cultural factors that affect literacy among children. Ÿ To Work individually with children, either reaching into or pulling out of the class, and how to work with other teachers on staff development, all while becoming a beer teacher yourself and gaining competency in dealing with struggling children. Module One: Comprehension Skills This module explores comprehension skills and examines the descripons of each type of comprehension strategy, instruconal implicaons for teaching comprehension, and sample lessons. Although word recognion, decoding, and fluency are building blocks of effecve reading, the ability to comprehend text is the ulmate goal of reading instrucon. Comprehension is a prerequisite for acquiring content knowledge and expressing ideas and opinions through discussion and wring. Module Two: Spelling Skills This module explores the big misconcepon that many people think spelling consists of memorizing all the words in a diconary and that spelling comes naturally to some and not to others. Good spellers aren't born, they are taught! In fact, there is a strong relaonship between spelling and word reading, because many of the same abilies — phonemic awareness, knowledge of leer paerns, an understanding of morphology and word meanings — underlie both reading and spelling. Good spellers make for beer readers and writers. Module Three: Grammar Skills This module explores how sentences are constructed and how different types of sentences are formed. It shows how to punctuate each type correctly and how to combine different sentence types for effecve wrien communicaon. Module Four: Creave wring and Essay wring Skills This module will explore smulang, interacve and innovave ways of producing competent wring, covering the genres of wring for stage and screen, poetry, short stories, children's ficon, and novels. The module will also cover various approaches to teaching solid essay wring which is a crical skill for teachers. Module Five: Hand wring Skills This module explores how handwring skills are an important developmental task and acvity for children. Through handwring they are able to express themselves and communicate with the world around them. Improving their penmanship, legibility, pencil/pen grasp, and working on problem areas are all important things that need to be addressed. However, the wring performance of school- age children is a maer of considerable concern.
