Literacy Support ProgramLiteracy Support Program

This Literacy Support Program will provide individual help to 40 students selected from our four houses. It will help students by assisting with homework and tutoring in particular classes. The rationale for this project is that students will do better in school if they can improve their ability to read and write in class and while doing their homework. The project’s rationale is a direct response to our WSIP priority of closing the achievement gap for our students. The early implementation will allow this project to act as a first step in our school’s comprehensive plan to close the gap. Continued collaboration with our other school projects will be part of this program. This program will attend to individual learning issues during the early weeks of the school year and throughout the school year. It can provide the larger projects, which will start later in the year, with vital student data about strategic planning and academic assessment results for each student. It can set the groundwork for establishing meaningful relationships with the purpose of acquiring and or extending cultural competence. The unique characteristic for this homework/tutorial support project is the use of higher order thinking activities to help students to complete homework and contribute effectively in particularly difficult classes.
