These skills include surveying, skimming, and scanning. In practice, these three skills are often used together. Surveying – This involves taking a quick look at the entire material to get a general idea of what it is about. Often it entails looking at titles, names of the author, headings, pictures, and other information which readily stand out when looking at a page. Skimming – This involves reading rapidly through the page to try to get the main ideas contained in the selection. Experienced readers usually skim by reading the first sentence or the first few words of the paragraph. Scanning – This skill allows the reader to find specific information quickly, usually those which answer the questions, who, what, when, and where. This reading skill is also used when one tries to find short, specific answers to questions about the material.
