Lessons learned from Random Sampling
Even if you think the students are “very weak”, DO NOT write the answers to questions on the board.
Scaffold instead -- provide vocabulary, sentence starters, encourage risk taking!

Don’t deduct points for content if you didn’t
specifically ask for the missing information.
Example from The Road Not Taken:
– Question “What season is it in the poem?”
– Answer: Fall/Autumn.
– Teacher deducted points because the student
didn’t justify answer. If you want justification add
“explain”.

Present one explicit (relevant) HOTS in each
piece, and then be sure to ask questions
which require using that skill to answer them.
Be certain that you know the difference
between HOTS and LOTS questions!

LOTS: Who? What? When? Where?

You should not teach or test straight from
the book as it is, since all of the books were
published before many changes were made
in the program.
Be sure that you know the purpose of each
component, and then use exercises and
questions from the book that suit your needs.

Always put the rubric on graded written
tasks.
– Content: x/80 Accuracy: x/20
OR
– Content: x/90 Accuracy: x/10
Underline every error in English in the
graded task and test.
If you deduct for content you MUST explain
why.

The Post-reading task MUST require understanding of the literature piece. It should not be possible to do the task without having read the piece. – For example: “Tell about a good deed that you
have done.” is NOT an appropriate post reading task for Count That Day Lost, since the student could easily do that without reading the poem.
– Instead: “Tell about a good deed that you have done and explain why George Eliot would have said that that deed would make a day well spent.”

The graded component should NOT be :
X Pre-reading
X Basic understanding
X A list of questions or a quiz
Instead choose: Bridging Text and Context or Post-reading. There are rubrics for grading these tasks in the handbook.
You may choose an Analysis and Interpretation task, but you will have to make up your own rubric.
Changes in the program
For 11th and 12th grade students this year:
There will not be an alternative question on
the F or D exam this summer. All students
will answer the extended HOTS question. The alternative question will still be on the Winter
exam.
Log students should also have one extended
HOTS question in every summative
assessment.
Changes in the program
The HOTS of Problem solving will no longer be
a required skill as of the Summer exam.
Instead Uncovering motives will be included.
These are the only changes that apply to this
year’s 11th and 12th grade students.
Changes starting with this year’s 10th grade students
Each unit is a separate log.
Grade for the unit:
Presentation – 10% All required activities for the key components are included, the log is neat, and handed in on time.
Graded Key Component – 40%
Summative Assessment – 50%
Approval for the literature program
Even if you are using the national program in your school, you still need to fill out the appropriate approval form and send it digitally to Shirley Burg.

Final grade for modules B, D and F
The final grade of the module will consist of:
– Unit Log grades
– Personal Response grade
– Extensive reading

Keeping the Unit Logs
Unit Logs should be kept until the end of the
school year during which they were
prepared, so that the students can use them
for the Personal Response.
3 examples of each unit should be kept by
the teacher (high grade, middle grade and
low grade) for feedback from the counselor
and/or Inspector.
Students taking the exam
Students will go through the identical
program as the students doing the Log.
At the end of the program, they will take an
exam prepared by the Ministry, which the
teachers will mark.
Students may take the exam once. There is
no moed bet.
