Our Story

While driving through Dedham one summerI happen to spot several beehives along the

side of the road. How was this possible? I alwaysthought you needed a farm to have bees. Myinterest was certainly piqued. I went home andstarted doing some research. To my amazement Ifound many books on the subject and startedordering them from my local library. I spent thenext several months reading and learning abouthoney bees and beekeeping. I then decided that Iwant to be a beekeeper. I found the NorfolkCounty Beekeepers Association, a club that had abee school. They held their club meetings and beeschool at the Norfolk County Agricultural School

in Walpole. The school started in January andended in April with the culminating of gettingyour first hive. At bee school I learned everythingthat I needed to know to start one of the most fas-cinating hobbies in the world. I took the class inthe winter of 2005, graduated in April, and gotmy first hive. My son took bee school the follow-ing year and had his own hive. Over the years mywife has become my biggest helper. We now haveover seven hives in our apiary.

Nature & Beekeeping

One of the things that beekeeping has done is putus more in touch with our environment. It hasmade us more aware of what we are doing to ourplanet. Being a beekeeper today is much morechallenging than it was 15 years ago. Today wehave to deal with many new issues. In order toconfront these issues, the beekeeping community

4

Page 5: Little Beehive Farm

came up with chemical ways to treat things likevarroa mites and tracheal mites. It all seemed overwhelming to us. It went against our basic philoso-phy. As a family of 6, we have always been proudof our recycling, reusing, and reducing efforts. Weare well aware of our impact on the environment. We decided that as beekeepers we didn’t want touse any chemicals to treat our hives. We use allnatural methods. Though it is more difficult andchallenging to keep hives naturally, it is worth theeffort.

Buddhism & Beekeeping

The idea of reincarnation is an integral part of theBuddhist philosophy. One’s karma (action) in thislifetime determines one’s re-birth. Buddhistsbelieve that all sentient beings (ability to feel sen-sation) have the opportunity to be re-born as ahuman being (the optimal birth).

5

Page 6: Little Beehive Farm

All of our hives are blessed with a Buddhistmantra, removing all obstacles from being re-bornas a human being. The seeds of the Dharma (Bud-dha’s teachings) have been planted on all thebees.

At the height of the season there can be asmany as 75,000 bees living in the hive. Given thefact that there are multiple generations withinone season (female worker bees only live 45 daysand the queen lays up to 2,000 eggs a day), this isa great opportunity to bless many sentient beings, giving them the opportunity to potentially be re-born as human beings.

Homeopathic Elements

Honey, beeswax, pollen, and propolis are all natu-ral occurring products of the hive. They are pur-ported to have therapeutic value.

6

Page 7: Little Beehive Farm

Honey can be use to treat many things, including cuts and scrapes, stomach ailments, andsore throats.

Beeswax is a natural product of the hive withhealing and protective properties. Beeswax can-dles, unlike regular wax candles (which are madefrom petroleum and produce toxins whenburned), are smokeless and actually clear andclean the air when they are burned.

Pollen, though not really a product of thehive, is collected by the bees from flowers as afood source (protein). Eating honey containinglocal pollen traces is said to help alleviate thesymptoms of seasonal allergies.

All the products of the hive not only havehealing properties, but they also have anti-viraland anti-bacterial properties. In addition, there isresearch and real-life situations where bee venomtherapy has helped people deal with the symp-toms of conditions like MS and arthritis.

Products of the Hive

What is honey?

Honey is one of the bee’s food sources. The beescreate honey by collecting nectar from many dif-ferent plants. Nectar is a sugar. Each plant’s nec-tar is made up of different sugars. This contributesto the different tastes of honey. The bees ingestthe nectar into their honey stomachs, mixing itwith enzymes. When they get back to the hivethey transfer the honey to the comb where theyevaporate moisture from the honey until it gets tothe right water content (around 17%). Whenthey cap the cells with wax the honey is ready.

Where does beeswax come from?

The bees create wax from glands on theirabdomens. They use the wax to create honey-comb to store honey and pollen and to raise theirbrood (eggs, larva, pupae). To produce wax, beesmust consume about eight times as much honeyby mass. It is estimated that bees fly 150,000miles, roughly six times around the earth, to yieldone pound of beeswax.

Why do bees collect pollen?

Bees visit many plants and trees collecting pollenand nectar. In the process the bees help pollenatemany of our crops. Approximately 40% of thefruits and vegetable we eat come from plants pol-lenated by honey bees. The bees carry the pollenback to their hive in Their pollen baskets. In thehive, pollen is used as a protein source necessary

during brood-rearing and for a balanced diet whencombined with honey.

What is propolis?

Propolis (or bee glue) is created from resins andtree saps. Honey bees use propolis to help sealcracks and openings in their hive as well as acleaning agent in cells where brood is raised.

Honey

Our honey is as natural and organic as the beescan possibly make it. Honeybees travel in a 2-3mile radius of their hive collecting nectar forhoney. Since we use only natural treatments inour hive, we can guarantee that there are nochemicals used in any part of our process.Beyond that we have no control over the rest ofour environment.

Our honey is not heated. The only thing wedo is filter the honey through a 400 mcg filter toremove excess debris that comes as a result of theextraction process. This leaves us with a honey

13

Page 14: Little Beehive Farm

that is very clean and clear, but also retains all thenatural nutrients and pollens.

Sometimes honey will crystallize. There isnothing wrong with it and the best thing to do isgently heat the honey either in a pan of water orin the microwave (Be careful: several 10-15 sec-onds intervals, stirring or shaking (cap on please)should be enough to dissolve the crystals).
