So WHoS Tom?an InTervIeW WITH BLaKe myCoSKIe,

    Founder oF TomS

If youre familiar with TOMS you know

that for every pair purchased a kid

who needs them is receiving a brand

new pair of shoes. But TOMS isnt a

person its an idea. Blake Mycoskie

    travelled to Argentina in 2006.

    There, he witnessed extreme poverty

and found himself wishing he could

outt the kids he saw walking around

barefoot. This dream gave rise to the

business, and TOMS was born. During

its rst year, TOMS sold 10,000 pairs

of shoes. He returned to Argentina

later that year with family and friends

and gave back to the children who

    had rst inspired him.

    TOMS works with humanitarian organi-

zations that help distribute new shoes

to children in over 40 countries around

the globe. These partners are experts

in the eld, ensuring that TOMS is able

    to give sustainably and responsibly.

Since 2006, TOMS has given over 2

million pairs of new shoes to children

    in need.

Tell Me AbOuT reTurNiNg TOArgeNTiNA TO DO yOur firSTShOe-DrOp bAck iN 2006.I had originally intended to return toArgentina with 250 pairs of shoes forthe children Id met earlier that year.Instead, I returned with my familyand friends with 10,000 pairs ofshoes. It was an amazing feeling toreturn to Argentina with more thanwhat I had expected and to be givingthese shoes with my mom next to me!

There were three boys who had justreceived their TOMS, and they ledme to a eld where they loved to playsoccer. It was full of rocks and glass, yet they had been playing barefoot-ed. Their rst thought when they hadreceived their shoes was that playingsoccer would be easier and evengive them speed! Experiencing thatwith them was one of my most fulll-ing moments.

Where hAve yOu DrOppeDShOeS SiNce?Ive been fortunate to travel to manydifferent locations like Ethiopia,South Africa, and Honduras.

hOW MANy DAyS A yeAr WOulD yOueSTiMATe yOure ON The rOAD?Over 200 days a year, for sure.

WhAT Are yOu reADiNgrighT NOW?Im re-reading Let My People GoSurng by Patagonias Yvon Chui-nard. I have so much respect forthe brand he has built.

WheN WAS The lAST TiMeyOu DANceD?It was on a recent Giving Trip inHonduras! Typically, after wevetted each of the kids in their newshoes, we get to spend time withthem whether it be blowing bubbles, playing soccer, or having a big danceparty. I can vividly remember thegroup of volunteers and about 50kids dancing in a giant circle in thehills of the Copan region in Honduras.

Giancarlo went home to Montebellunato design what would soon becomethe worlds rst high fashion winterperformance footwear, eschewingthe traditional leathers and optingfor nylon and foams materials thatat the time were on the cutting edgeof technology.

I want people to love our product for more than justthe fact thats its recycled, explains Raphal Ricard, one of the three dudes that form Cest Beau. They buildshortboards, small skateboards made from bigger usedboards. ids throw away their decks when theyre oftenstill brand new! Their boards may be baptized withGrandpa names (Rosaire, Rjean, Yvon), but theyre farfrom old-fashioned. Its faster, makes sharper turnsand can easily hop onto the sidewalk. Hipsters that

    cant skate best stay clear.

If bowling alleys are everywhere now, Guillaume Mnardis kinda getting the blame. A bearded and built guy,the manly wood worker walked us through the spacewhere he produces furniture and bar countertops.A lab cabinet has been transformed into cabinet doors,a land surveyors tripod into a lamp, a kids desk into astreamlined chair. Everything is recycled, particularlylocal wood. We have noble woods here, like oak, maple, cherry or hemlock. They are raw species that are similar

to us. Or similar to himGrrrr.

When he stumbled upon a photo of a guitar made froma cigar box, Lenny wanted to know how it sounded. He then built one, only to nd the gritty sound of theDeep South. I was interested in Blues from the 30s.In those days, poor musicians would make guitars withwhatever they could nd. I liked the idea of making mu-sic at any cost. Even if his product has been perfected

since, you can still nd in its sound a drop of poverty.

The chair Marc-Antoine has in the corner of his studioisnt really made for sitting. Sharper than it is functional, its more of an art piece than anything else. Its darkwood comes from Africa, and we understand quite fastthe Marc-Antoine has a thing for colourful woods whenhe shows us the purple shavings from the wood usedto make a bike handlebar. I like pushing wood to theextreme. Its a material that weve been underestimatingwith the rise of plastics.

I work with all materials. However, with wood, I get thisimpression that I can make anything, explains Alex.To make anything includes boutique decorations, eventinstallations and even platform shoes. As for all materi-als, that sometimes implies taxidermy animals, that hellinclude in his installations. This passion/business hasbeen Alexs mainstay for the past year: I am interestedin antique Taxidermy, out of respect for the animal. I lovending them and giving them a second life.

I can identifymore with the mountains, maybe because Im really, really scared of the ocean. The mountains are a bit safer;you can crouch in them.
