World Book Day Last Thursday we took part in World Book Day. Please read the following reports from each year group to hear about the exciting day. Reception had a lovely day thinking about The Smartest Giant in Town. They produced some super writing all about their favourite characters and used real money to buy the giant some new clothes! They have also had a brilliant time sharing a variety of different stories with their Y4 Buddies. They looked fabulous in their costumes - many thanks to parents for your support with this. Year 1 completed some exciting writing based on ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. The children had to write a letter to the crayons asking them to return to their pencil case. The pupils completed some interesting shared activities with their buddies in the afternoon. Year 2 spent a lovely morning sharing books with their buddies then afterwards they looked at different famous authors and listened to some extracts of stories they had written. Then they discussed their favourite authors and shared their favourite part of the books they had come dressed as. In the afternoon they started their new class book, Flat Stanley. Year 3 had a wonderful time on World Book Day. They came dressed as characters from their favourite books and brought books to share with the class as well as explaining the reasons why they enjoy those books so much. They completed a 'book scavenger hunt', where they had to scan and skim texts in order to find certain words or pictures. This was great fun! Year 4 enjoyed sharing their favourite books and characters as part of World Book Day. They completed a word challenge and had a great afternoon with their buddies reading books together. What great day Year 5 had on World Book Day! All of the children looked fantastic and made such a huge effort to take on the persona of their favourite literary character. During the morning, Year 5 took part in several games based on words and phrases. After break, they shared the book they had brought into school and gave a verbal book review with a friend. The children really enjoyed sharing why they found their favourite book so special. In the afternoon, they spent time with their buddies, taking on a mentor role, sharing the magic of reading with the younger children and creating their own book marks. Year 6 started the day by reading their books to their buddies. They brought in the book which had inspired their costume and then chose a section of their book to share before designing and creating a book mark. Following this Y6 watched News Round, wrote balanced arguments, trying to think carefully about how to inform and entertain their readers. Finally they enjoyed participating in a house World Book Day themed quiz. The children looked amazing in their costumes and had a great day. Reception Assembly Today our Reception children treated us to a lovely Mothering Sunday Assembly. The children revealed what mums get up to in the day—but don’t worry your secrets are safe with us! The children made their Mums feel very special with wonderful poems, songs and some very imaginative portraits. It was a tear jerker as always, and once again I needed the tissues! They also presented their Mum, with a daffodil. Thank you to mums, grandmas (and dads) for being such an appreciative audience. We hope you have a lovely day on Sunday. Happy Mothering Sunday to all our Mums. Remember children, to make your Mum feel very special on Sunday!

The word of the month

is intriguing

Y1 Visit to Blakesley Hall On the Friday before half term, Year 1 visited Blakesley Hall as part of their Great Fire of London history topic. The children were shown around the hall by a very knowledgeable historian who engaged them with his enthusiastic approach. The pupils learnt about how houses in 1666 were built, how the fire started and how significant individuals such as Samuel Pepys and King Charles II would have dressed. The trip was absolutely enthralling and the children’s

behaviour was exemplary throughout. Well done Year 1.

King Edwards Birmingham Open Sessions KES Birmingham, an independent grammar school for boys, have advised us that they will be holding an Open Morning on Saturday 17th March from 10am to 12.30pm. There will also be further sessions on 26th June and 15th September and details of these will be provided in due course. Further information can be found on their website at www.kes.org.uk.

NSPCC Assembly The NSPCC’s ‘Speak out, Stay safe’ programme is visiting our school to make sure our pupils have the knowledge and understanding to keep themselves safe. They conducted an assembly this week and will be carrying out workshops with Years 5 and 6. Issues such as bullying and abuse will be discussed without using scary words or adult language. The NSPCC have undertaken these sessions in other schools and are confident that the content is appropriate for primary school children. More information is available for you to continue the conversation at home at nspcc.org.uk/pants.

Visit from Education Consultant We are very keen to maintain our high standards and strive to give the children the best possible education. To this end, we recently engaged the services of a highly regarded educational consultant to review the teaching and learning in our school. She highlighted the consistency of our approach to teaching, she was impressed by the strong gains that pupils make in their writing by the time they leave school and the broad range of vocabulary used. She also commented how classrooms are calm with pupils of all ages demonstrating positive attitudes to learning. She saw strong relationships between adults and pupils and also amongst the children themselves. Talking to the children, she found them to be polite and welcoming, responsive to challenge, resilient, and confident speakers. She gave us some pointers to take us on further which we will fully embrace. We were delighted with the report.
