The 135th Little World’s Fair:
No matter how many times you’ve visited, there’s always more to see at this real country fair
STORY BY DAN HUST
You’ll probably notice some-thing quite different when youarrive at the Little World’s Fair
this August 15-17.The centerpiece of the Fair – which
is why it’s known as the “midway” –will be all-new.
“It will be a different atmosphere,”promises Cathy Bender, president ofthe Fair’s organizer, the NeversinkAgricultural Society. “It will be a newlook and feel.”
Bob and Kathy DeStefano willmake sure of that through their com-pany Dreamland Amusements.
This is the first time Dreamlandwill be running the Little World’s Fairmidway, but the company has beenin business for more than 30 years.
They helped establish the SuffolkCounty Fair on Long Island, are amajor presence at the Florida StateFair, and are arriving in Grahamsvillefresh off the Ulster County Fair.
“We like quaint little towns likethis,” Bob affirms.
Their efforts, however, are anythingbut “little.” The DeStefanos person-ally oversee the setup, operation andteardown of every ride – and whatrides they’ll be!
• A 70-foot-tall Ferris wheel• The dizzying Himalaya ride,
which goes backwards and forwards• The Dreamcatcher, where up to
16 friends can spin and swing at thesame time
• Anchors Away, taking parents andkids higher than any pirate ship hasever gone
• The brand new Delusion, straightfrom the Delaware State Fair, whichmust be seen to be believed
Plenty of the traditional favoriteswill also be available, along withgames and family-friendly amuse-ments.
If all goes as planned, Dreamlandwill even provide an ATM for ticketsand other purchases.
The DeStefanos are looking for-ward to making an impression – anda good one has already been madeon them.
“The Fair’s board has really done afabulous job all these years,” saysBob.
And that goes back a long way – 135years, in fact.
So even with all that’s new, you canrest assured that the Fair’s old-timefeel – from 4-H exhibits to horseshows to funnel cakes – will be ever-present.
“We like the old-fashioned, agricul-tural side of it,” promises Cathy. “Youcan still let your kids run around,
and they won’t get lost!”
COME ON DOWN!The Fair is offering some special

The Delaware Valley Raptor Cen-ter will be hosting three of itseducational programs “Close
Encounters with Birds of Prey” duringthe Grahamsville Little World’s Fairthis August.
The program, normally presented byeither DVRC Director Bill Streeter orAssociate Director Jan Lucciola focus-es on various topics to educate thepublic regarding birds of prey.
Topics covered include predator/prey relationships, the “evil” predatormyth, raptor identification, rehabilita-tion, raptor conservation, the ancientart of falconry and much more.
Five or six live birds of prey are usedin the program, giving audiences thechance to get a close look at birdsincluding the Bald Eagle, owls, falcons, hawks and other raptors.
The DVRC is a not-for-profit raptorrehabilitation center in Milford, PA,with a focus on returning injured rap-tors back to the wild. If birds cannot bereturned to the wild, the DVRC usesthem for educational purposes includ-ing the “Close Encounter” program inmore than 120 shows a year to over
24,000 audience members fromschools, scout troops, camps andmore.

Family of Eagle Scouts ensures Fair and town are well-keptSTORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST
It takes a community to put a fairtogether, and that sometimesinvolves the whole family.
The McKeons, for instance, haveturned helping others into a familytradition.
Sean and Lynn McKeon’s youngestson, Logan, has spent the past fewmonths preparing to install eight newbenches around the main horse ringat the Little World’s Fairgrounds in
Grahamsville.“I figure there are a lot of elderly
people who come down here,” hesaid, noting the dearth of seating inthe ring area (unless you’re up for sit-ting on the ground). “These shouldlast 20-25 years.”
With help from his parents andbrothers, Logan got the pressure-treated slabs of lumber firmlyanchored in the ground, stained andready for fairgoers by the end of July.
And as a result, by the time you read
this, he’ll be well on his way tobecoming an official Eagle Scout –the highest recognition bestowed ona Boy Scout.
Logan, 16, is a member of Troop 97in Neversink, as were his brothersbefore him. Indeed, both Zack, 21,and Brent, 22, reached the rank ofEagle during their Scouting years.
Brent’s Eagle Scout project alsofocused on the fairgrounds, where herebuilt the Registration Booth fouryears ago.
“It was collapsing,” he recalled.
Family and friends helped him redothe floor joists, stabilize the roof sup-ports, level out the building, andrepaint its sides. Flower boxes wereadded to each corner, and new elec-trical wiring was installed.
Brent is now a wildlife managementmajor at SUNY Cobleskill – the sameschool as brother Zack, who is study-ing fisheries and aquaculture.
Zack chose to apply his Eagle Scoutproject efforts toward the Fallsburg-Neversink Cemetery, which sits in theshadow of the Neversink Dam.
The Registration Booth at the Little World’s Fair got a new lease on life four years ago thanksto Brent McKeon and family, who rehabbed the aging building as part of Brent’s Eagle Scoutproject.
Brothers Brent, Logan and Zack McKeon (from left to right) have been a team on Eagle Scoutprojects more than once.
AUGUST, 2014 SULLIVAN COUNTY DEMOCRAT LITTLE WORLD’S FAIR 17L
Relocated along Divine CornersRoad from the area flooded by theNeversink Reservoir decades ago, thecemetery is maintained by an associ-ation but had suffered from vandal-ism.
After clearing out trees felled by arecent storm, Zack and crew straight-ened crooked tombstones, raised fall-en stones and repaired broken ones –some weighing over 500 pounds.
They then used old records to plotout 25 unmarked gravesites andplanted crosses (made out of recycledplastic) to ensure each grave wastreated with dignity.
Then, to make it easier onthose who mow the lawn,Zack dumped a load of top-soil and spread it around toflatten the dips and rises inthe cemetery.
Finally, he rebuilt thestone walls surrounding the1.5-acre cemetery, all at noexpense to the association.
“They were running out ofmoney,” he said, noting thatwithout funds, the associa-tion would have had to handthe cemetery over to thestate. “It let them keep con-
trol over it a little longer.”A relative of one of the deceased
liked the results so much that theymade a sizeable donation to the asso-ciation, further extending the impactof Zack’s good deeds.
That was four years ago, but in lateJuly, you could find him and the restof the Mc Keons once again puttinghand to shovel and sweat to brow.
So when you find yourself sitting onthe “best seats in the house” at thefairgrounds this year, breathe a littlethanks to a family – and a communi-ty – that’s never stopped caring.
Above: More than two dozencrosses dot the Fallsburg-Nev-ersink Cemetery near the Nev-ersink Dam – part of Zack Mc-Keon’s Eagle Scout project.
At left: From the left, Zack,Logan, Sean and Brent McKeon(and Lynn, not pictured) fill inand smooth out soil they’veplaced around two of the eightnew benches now installed bythe main ring at the LittleWorld’s Fairgrounds.
