Our diocese currently has 8 wonderful seminarians who are in college or major seminary. Please pray for them as well! That net loss of 11 means 37 active priests for the 24 counties of our diocese. May our seminarian and newly ordained numbers grow! May good health allow retiring priests to help the active priests when they are on retreat or vacation, with visits to and care for the infirm and homebound, and other needed ways. FROM THE PRIESTS: We Frs. Tims hope that all of us are encouraging young men to consider participating in “The Quest 2021”, which we wrote about here last week (see below for that announcement; see also our website). Although that is not specifically aimed at only young men thinking about priesthood, this experience might well encourage them to reflect on the vocation of priesthood. Our diocese currently has 8 wonderful seminarians who are in college or major seminary. Please pray for them as well! We thought we would update you on the statistics concerning priests in our diocese—the numbers going forward are certainly not set in stone, but they remind us all of how important it is for each of us to encourage young men to consider priesthood in any ways we can.

Active Priests in the Diocese of Sioux City 1980 = 166 1990 = 146 2000 = 109 2019 = 48

Age Distribution of Active Priests in the Diocese of Sioux City 25-29 = 1 30-34 = 5 35-39 = 6 40-44 = 1 45-49 = 1

50-54 = 7 55-59 = 9 60-64 = 11 65-69 = 8 If nothing changes—which is unlikely—in the next 9 years, 19 priests may retire and 8 seminarians might be or-dained. May good health allow retiring priests to help the active priests when they are on retreat or vacation, with visits to and care for the infirm and homebound, and other needed ways. May the hard work of our Bishop and Vocation Director help attract some more foreign-born priests, which has become more and more challenging. — Thanks be to God for the wonderful foreign-born priests who already have sacrificed so much to serve us!

CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY http://christthekingcatholiccommunity.org/

We still have some remaining special times for Reconciliation this Lent. For 1st Reconciliation, please bring your child to one of the opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation; everyone wel-come as well:

Sun., March 21, St. John, Arcadia @ 3:00pm (3 priests; Fr. Remmes helping);

Fri., March 26, Sacred Heart, Templeton, with Adoration, 6:15pm until all heard.

We will continue to hear confessions by appointment. Reconcilia-tion rooms are too small for confessions during this pandemic, but we are able to hear them in other spaces. We are also bringing standing screens to each of our parishes—you may stand behind the screen to go anonymously, or stand to the side of the screen to go face-to-face. SACRED TRIDUUM & EASTER Holy Thursday, April 1 7:00pm: St. Bernard, Breda & Sacred Heart, Templeton Good Friday, April 2 1:00pm: St. Elizabeth Seton, Glidden & St. Augustine, Halbur 3:00pm: Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St. John the Baptist, Arcadia Holy Saturday, April 3—EASTER VIGIL 8:00pm: St. Bernard, Breda & St. Elizabeth Seton, Glidden Easter Sunday, April 4 8:00am: Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St. Augustine, Halbur 10:00am: Sacred Heart, Templeton & St. John the Baptist, Arcadia FIRST EUCHARIST: Weekend Masses of April 10-11 (2nd Sun-day of Easter).

THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT, YEAR B Readings: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23; Psalm 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 (R. “Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!”); Ephesians 2:4-10; John 3:14-21 The 4th Sunday of Lent is called “Laetare Sunday”, because the first word of the opening antiphon in Latin is laetare, “rejoice”: “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast” (Is 66:10-11). We rejoice, for our celebration of Easter approaches; “…may [we] hasten toward the solemn celebrations to come” (Collect, i.e., opening prayer for the Mass). We rejoice, for the mood and theme of the Mass focus on hope, on good things that God is doing in the midst of his people. The Chronicler begins with quite a different mood than hope. This recorder of court history spares no critique of the princes, priest, and people of Judah (southern kingdom). To him, they were rotten to the core, even “polluting the LORD’s temple.” They didn’t listen to the prophets who, out of compassion, the LORD sent to them. As a result, they were overrun by the Babylonians: Jerusalem was sacked; the Temple was destroyed; many were taken into exile in Babylon (modern day Iraq). The despair and distress of the exiles is poetically put in the responsorial Psalm 137, but so too is the en-during love and longing for their holy city, Jerusalem. But now there is HOPE! Babylonian was taken over by the Per-sians; King Cyrus of Persia (modern day Iran) is “inspired” by the LORD to officially proclaim that it was the LORD who made him successful in his conquests and that Cyrus was “charged to build [the LORD] a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.” To do that, Cyrus frees the descendants of the Israelite exiles to return to their land, and he provides materials to rebuild the Temple. The opening antiphon from Is 66 (see above) comes from this time period and succinctly shows the reason for rejoicing in Jerusalem after the years of mourning noted in Psalm 137.

The liberating, redeeming work of the LORD through Cyrus his “anointed” (i.e., in Hebrew, Messiah! See Isaiah 44:24–45:25) is now seen in the Messiah, the Christ, Jesus of Nazareth. Neverthe-less, Nicodemus is not so sure. Our Gospel passage picks up in the midst of the story (Jn 3:1-21); Nicodemus, a Pharisee and “ruler of the Jews” (3:1) came to Jesus under the cover of “night”. While he can say to Jesus that he believes him to be “a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him” (3:2), he has not yet come to full faith in Jesus. Jesus tells him that to truly know him, Nicodemus needs to be “born from above” (3:3) and “of the Spirit” (3:8). Nicodemus takes this too literally, understanding it to require him, a grown man, to “be born again” (3:4). Jesus continues to “explain” this deep reality with various images, including how the Son of Man will be lifted up as Moses had “lifted up the serpent in the desert” (3:14). This leads to the summation of the liberating, redeeming and saving plan of God being accomplished in Jesus Christ: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (3:16). This is truly cause for rejoicing! We can rejoice all the more as the Letter to the Ephesians en-courages us with the strong message of God’s mercy that is availa-ble to all “by grace” and “through faith”—another way of saying, being born “from above” and “of the Spirit.” This “life with Christ” is “the gift of God”, it is not something we have earned. Through this great gift and life in Christ, “we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” This is truly cause for rejoicing! The LORD God worked through Cyrus to liberate and redeem his peo-ple. God the Father brings fullness of liberation, redemption and salvation through his only begotten Son. The Holy Spirit continues the work of the Father and his Son through us, the Church, whenev-er we bring the great mercy of God to others through our words and works. May our rejoicing this Laetare Sunday lead us to help others to rejoice, too, most especially by being the presence of God’s mer-cy to them. To enrich your Lenten journey, take time to visit the selection of posters from The Vatican International Exhibit of the Eucharis-tic Miracles, which is on display in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (open Tues.–Fri.). At the age of 11, Blessed Carlo Acutis began documenting stories of these miracles. The flesh and blood and apparitions in the consecrated host, apparitions of angels and saints, the survival of fire, theft and desecration, the averting of wars and disasters, and the science verifying these miracles all witness to Christ’s True Presence. May this deepen your appreciation of the miracle of Christ’s real presence every time we celebrate the Eucha-rist!
