Dear Friends:

People sometimes ask whether Christmas or Easter requires more energy, time and exertion? Aside from the spiritual qualities unique to each Solemnity, Easter, by far, requires the most effort and attention. To be clear....it is not just Easter Sunday, although the vast crowds are both energizing and exhausting; it is the FULL WEEK of events preceding Easter Sunday that are EACH uniquely special, which means they ALL require their own particular treatment/attention. This contrasts with setting up for Advent...which, when done, is good for four weeks...or even Christmas, which is a singu-lar event and then good for two or three weeks. HOLY WEEK starts with: #1 - Palm Sunday...requiring its own PALM procurement, Art & Environment touches, a uniquely special Passion Narrative and the somberness appropriate to the first telling of the PASSION. #2 - Tuesday of Holy Week is our Seder Supper for all our Administrative Teams, about 30 people in total...and preparation of the Church for Holy Thursday, thus hours in the kitchen, setting up the Seder Table followed by take down and clean-up. #3 - Wednesday of Holy Week has me up at LAX at 8am to welcome our Parkland Youth, treat them to breakfast somewhere in Los Angeles/Hollywood, get them situated at their hotel in Anaheim and later that evening, host them at the Rectory for a Barbecue and SoCal Pool Party. #4 – Holy Thursday, for me, requires me to get ready for Holy Thursday evening, the start of Triduum, as well as early prepping as much as possible for Friday night’s decoration in anticipation of Easter. Thursday evening, start of Triduum, has its own look and set-up for the Washing of Feet, followed by the Altar of Repose until midnight...in addition, Fr. Paw of St. Pius in Buena Park celebrates a Holy Thursday dinner from 9pm-midnight to which Cheeyoon and I are invited. #5 - Good Friday morning is our Prayer Breakfast at 7am but I usually pick up Bishop Kevin around 6am and then help dis-mantle the Prayer Breakfast tables following the breakfast...and then take our Parkland youth down to Newport Coast for lunch on the sand near Crystal Cove. #6 – Friday night is our Second Night of Triduum – the Passion of Jesus and the Reverencing of the Cross. #7 – Immediately following the Good Friday Passion Narrative and rituals, our Art & Environment team descends on the Hall and transforms it into EASTER...which takes us until around 1or 2am on Saturday. #8 – Saturday DAY is filled with anything we may have missed AND getting ready for the Vigil with its multiplicity of ritualistic actions by which our candidates and catechumens are brought into the Church. #9 – Easter Sunday morning...up bright and early at 5am so as to get the Church prepped and ready for the CROWDS of people anxious to celebrate the Resurrection. #10 – Enjoy brunch with friends around 2pm and #11 – Fly to NYC Sunday night and start to sleep, sleep, sleep. So...the short answer as to whether Christmas or Easter is more intensive...please re-read the above paragraph!!

Next weekend being Palm Sunday, please allow yourselves plenty of time so as to enjoy the Passion Narratives as well as the opportunity to pluck as many fronds of Blessed Palm from the branches as you desire. In anticipation of Easter Sunday, we have arranged for STREET PARKING on BOTH SIDES...the grassy field will likewise be open for parking but please, please, please, make sure that you come EARLY to every Mass (the same schedule as every Sunday...with the exception of NO 5pm Mass on Saturday....it is replaced by the final night of TRIDUUM, starting at 7pm) so as to avoid the crowded parking conditions.

THANK YOU for your generous help towards making our Hall become an EASTER GARDEN worthy of the Resur-rection. The FLOWER ENVELOPES are still available at the entrances/exits...the Easter Season runs right through to June....which means we keep the garden bright and beautiful right up to Pentecost.

With the rapid approach of Holy Saturday and the full reception of our Catechumens and Candidates into our Roman Catholic Faith, I invite you to consider writing some notes of welcome to them. Even though you may not know them personally, they are becoming part of our Santa Clara community and a part of our universal Roman Catholic faith...a note from you goes a long way to help them TRULY feel welcomed to our home. Our Catechumen’s are: Dan Dao, Haley Hamilton and Emily Matiasevich. Our Candidates are: Melvin Benner, Shawna Browne, Darren Campbell, Charles Coburn, Bradley Collier, Anissa Encarnacion, Nichelle Lupo and Gina Matiasevich. Please return the cards either directly to the Parish Office or via the weekend Stewardship/Offertory Basket....BEFORE Easter weekend. Thanks.

Our 2019 Development Campaign is getting closer and closer to $600,000 in pledges. With still LESS THAN HALF of our supposed 1100 Registered families thus far participating, this is a great beginning...but we are still looking for the OTHER HALF of our community to participate. Our next step will be a team of volunteer PHONE CALLERS making personal contact with our absentee parishioners to discern WHY they are choosing to not participate....and to try to induce them to support the effort. (Later in May/June we will be sending out formal requests for verification to those whose names are on our Registry but from whom we have had NO recordable financial involvement for the past two years, asking if they are really still participating with Santa Clara? If not, or if we do not receive the return postcard from them, then we will delete them from our Registry. P.S. When families request a statement of Registry & Involve-ment here at the parish for their sons or daughters possible enrollment at one of the Catholic High Schools, we always make mention of their financial stewardship to the parish, or lack thereof.)

Thanks for your time and attention in working through all of this. The next weeks get busy, filled with lots of graced experiences...throughout it all, please remember, you are loved. FKB

April 6-7, 2019Fifth Sunday of Lent

Isaiah 43:16-21 Philippians 3:8-14 John 8:1-11Unless we are using our thumb for the pointing instrument....‘Every time we point a finger at someone, three fingers point back at us!’ We have all heard variations on this sage counsel...to get our ‘own lives in order’ before we go judging and condemning others. Drawing nearer and nearer to Holy Week, this weekend’s Gospel of John recounts an embarrassing episode in which the Church elite (of Jesus’ day) attempted to trap Jesus in his response to the query regarding whether the woman (caught in adultery) should be stoned to death....or not (hmmm...last I heard, it takes TWO to commit adultery...what happened to the man?) In his response, Jesus endeavors to both teach us something...and to remember that, ‘but for the grace of God, there goes each of us.’ Sometimes those making the most noise, lodging the loudest complaint, writing the most critical letter, threatening the direst legal action, roiling the familial waters with their rancor...are not acting out of a heightened sense of justice or fairness but rather so as to keep everyone else off balance so that their own failings (crimes/indiscretions) will not be observable or discovered. For example, while appropriate justice will (and is already being meted out via public humiliation) to those who sought corrupt entrance to prestigious universities for their sons/daughters...have not many of us, at one time or another, sought some sort of ‘special favor’ from our assorted connections? (Even down to the embarrassing reality of some clergy frequenting restaurants, markets and stores where they know the management will comp them!) Within this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus seems unfazed by the woman’s activities...rather, he offers her a fresh start with the simple words: ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on, do not sin anymore.’ Jesus does not desire us to destroy ourselves through our own actions....NOR does he desire us to play the blame game so as to make-believe that our own indiscretions are, in comparison to others, acceptable. A good reminder...the best way to change the world is not by simply condemning everyone else but rather...in our own lives, NOT DOING what we find contemptible.

Thank you for sharing these early days of April with our Santa Clara community. Next weekend will be Palm Passion Sunday, please allow extra time for the lengthier Passion narrative as well as time for you to pluck fresh fronds from the palm branches. Holy Week follows, again, I urge/invite/request the pleasure of your company...for the experiences of Holy Thursday and Good Friday (both at 7pm) so as to make Easter Sunday that much richer of an experience. Like at Christmas, your assistance with transforming our Hall into a suitable celebration of the Resurrection is requested...simply use the FLOWER ENVELOPES at the entrances/exits and our Art & Environment Team will do all the hard work...because ‘we love you!’ Tickets for our Ladies Event on April 27th will be on sale next weekend after all the Masses...please come prepared, to purchase as the luncheon event usually sells out promptly. The Bulletin has other odds and ends, please take one with you...and whether it be January, February, March or April, you are loved. FKB

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.

John 19:41Having a powerful emotional and tender place within many of our hearts, transforming our Church at Christmas with beautiful Art and Environment is a slam-dunk. Of COURSE we want our Church (temporary as it is) to look beautiful for the holidays...we want to show it off to our friends and family who join us for Masses and be able to ‘lovingly brag’ by sending photos of family posing in front of hundreds of poinsettias and a beautifully arranged Nativity scene. Interestingly, as a MATTER of DOCTRINE and FAITH....there would be no Christmas if Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday had not occurred.....and thus, it is important that we likewise transform our Church into an EASTER environment of respectful, EXUBERANT beauty. Unlike the Christmas Season that lasts for just a few weeks....the Easter Season runs from April 21st to Pentecost, June 9th...which means we need to maintain our celebratory Easter Art and Environment for SEVEN WEEKS. What we have done in the past seems to have worked well....thus...we are doing it again this year. Rather than asking you to go out and obtain hundreds of plants and flowers...getting your cars soiled and perhaps frustrating you if you cannot locate just the right plant...out of OUR LOVE FOR YOU....our Art & Environment Team will do all the dirty work. We will shop, we will load our cars, we will keep everything watered and alive....we will change out the flowers as the season leans toward Pentecost...we will do it ALL FOR YOU, so that your (our) Easter will be beautifully memorable. FOR YOUR PART...all we ask is that you help pay for everything by using one of the EASTER FLOWER envelopes available at the entrances/exits. Yes, it takes a lot of work and effort to transform our ‘Hall’ into a beautiful Easter GARDEN...but with your financial help...we can promise you a Santa Clara home that will suitably honor the Resurrection of Jesus in a BEAUTIFUL way. Thanks for your help and your generosity.

this weekend heart & soul ministry food

collectionThank you for the kind and generous donations of food, household cleaning supplies and paper products that Santa Clara parishioners give each month to the Heart and Soul Ministry. For this collection, we are asking for donations that will best meet the needs of Immaculate Heart parishioners. When you shop, we would appre-ciate donations of cereal, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, dry pasta, dry beans, white or brown rice, pasta sauce, and canned chicken and tuna. Immacu-late Heart has a substantial stock of canned vegetables, beans and soups, so we ask that you focus on other items at this time. Paper products, personal products such as soap and toothpaste, and household cleaning supplies are always in demand. We appreciate your support.

NEWS FROM SAINT VINCENT DE PAULThanks to the Santa Clara de Asis parishioners’ gen-erosity, Saint Vincent de Paul continues to help local families meet their immediate needs.

Recently, we helped a veteran with three children pay his electricity bill and helped a mother with five chil-dren with a utility bill and groceries. Helping parishio-ners and neighbors is possible due to your donations.
