ʻWalkiesʼ A happy dog is a stimulated dog. Disruptive behaviour at home comes from a dog who is bored with nothing to do. Take your 4 legged friend out at least twice a day for mental stimulus, physical exercise and socialising with other canine friends.

Name tags Legally we have an obligation to name/label our dogs with a tag on their collar. Yes, it is advisable to tattoo or microchip your dog, but a name tag is compulsary. The Kennel Club states : The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable).

Companionship Your dog is a social animal. In the wild, wolves live in packs. As a domesticated canine, you and your family are his pack. To leave a dog longer than 6 hours on his own is detrimental to his happiness. If you have to be out longer, make sure you make provisions for someone to come in and interact with your dog and perhaps take him for a quick walk round the block.

Pack leader As I said in the point above, your pet dog is a pack animal by nature. He needs a leader. Make sure you are the leader. If the dog thinks he is pack boss, you will have an aggressive and difficult dog on your hands. He will love you more if you consistantly correct him when he performs unacceptable behaviour.

Health checks Regularly check your dog over for anything that may look abnormal. We’re thinking here of ticks, thorns in feet, ear infections, cuts/grazes. Try to look in his mouth and preferably brush his teeth. If your dog has a sore mouth, he will be grumpy, prevention is better than cure!

Regular grooming A good regular brushing session with a curry comb, love mitt, or any other type of brush will help relax both you and your dog, stimulate blood flow to his skin and muscles and help achieve a sleek, glossy coat. Medium to long haired dogs will also need professional grooming. An internet search in your local area will give you the names of your local groomer.

Veterinary visits Take your dog to the vet for annual health check ups. There you can discuss any worries that you have with your dog. You can have their vaccinations and worming done at the same time.

Feeding There is so much commercially available food these days, and you can spend hours choosing the right one for your dog. Everyone has their favourites (including the dogs!) My personal favourite is the BARF diet (Bones and Raw Food). My 3 dogs thrive on this type of feeding. For more details on the BARF diet, you can check out www.barfworld.com or Raw Dog Food by Carina Beth MacDonald is a good read; you can find this on Amazon.

Water Whilst we are thinking of what our dog takes on board, always provide a clean bowl of fresh water for him to access at all times. A dog can become very hot very quickly and dehydrate.

Activities Have you thought of doing extra fun stuff with your doggy companion? Yes he can be a pet dog, but he has so much potential in him. Gun dogs really enjoy the fetch and retrieve game, so field trials or gun trials are a good choice here. All shapes and sizes can have a go at agility although the border collie is particularly good at this. If you have a pedigree dog, how about showing? Or flyball? Heelwork to music or obedience? There is something for everyone! Most of all, enjoy your dog, love him, and he will love you back

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you get me. 2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. 3. Place your trust in me. 4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, entertainment and friends. I only have you. 5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it. 7. Please don't hit me. I can't hit back, but I can bite and scratch and I really don't want to do that. 8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right foods or I have toothache. Maybe I've been out in the sun too long or my heart is getting old and weak. 9. Take care of me when I get old as you too will grow old. 10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence". Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, in my own way, I love you, TOTALLY!

What to do now Thank you so much for reading my guide, our dogs are what bind so many of us together and I’d love to be able to help you further and live life with a happy and healthy dog. Please do share this guide with your friends, and remember they can download their own copy at www.sharonfoxhall.co.uk – my business grows through your kind recommendation so please don’t keep me a secret! If you have a dog or puppy that needs training, I run classes frequently in the local Lyne Regis area – or if you live further afield and would like a one to one training session over the phone (remember it’s the owner that needs training, not the dog!) I’m more than happy to discuss this with you. Please call me on 01297 678 277 today… I very much look forward to chatting with you soon,

Sharon Foxhall
