• Weekly reach to Radio 2 has risen for the 2nd quarter

in a row to a high 15.49m . This is the 4th highest

reach for the network which was up by 130k/+0.8%

on the Q and a rise of +436k/+2.9% on the year.

Positively over 1 in 4 of all UK adults (28.4%) continue

to listen to Radio 2. After hitting a lower level in Q2

17, the network has recovered well.

• Share of listening has also pushed upwards to a

strong 18.3%. Share was up 0.8% pts on the Q and a

shift of 1.0% pt on the Y. This is the highest share

level since Q1 16. Positively, the share among the

younger listeners (35-54s) moved up to its highest

level since Q1 16 at 19.7% and share among the

older 55+ audience was up to a record high of 23%,

meaning nearly 1 in 4 hrs of listening among this age

group is to R2!

• Listening hours have now moved back to a high

12hrs 16 mins per listener an increase of +19mins on

the Q and steady on the year (-3mins). Radio 2

remains above Radio 4 (10:51) and has the highest

level for a UK wide station. R2 accounts for over 1 in

3 of all hrs listened to BBC Radio (34.6%).

• The mean average age to Radio 2 edged upwards

this quarter at 53 years (+1). The average age of

listener to the Chris Evans Breakfast Show remained

steady at 53 years.

• Positively reach among the 35-54s moves up again

this Q after seeing a low earlier in year. Reach

among 35-54s saw an increase of +100k on Q and

up by +60k on the Y at 5.73m.

• Another record reach among the 55+ at 7.46m

listeners. Reach among this older target was up by

+190k listeners on the Q & saw a significant rise of

430k on the Y. Station now has a record number of

listeners aged both 55-64 (3.26m) and 65+ (4.20m).

The reach among the younger 35-44s positively

nudged upwards this quarter from 2.21m to 2.26m.

Directionally, Radio 2 continues to do better in

reaching the older 55+ audience (reach: 38%) vs

younger 35-54s (reach: 33%).

• Gender profile is marginally more male this Q: 51.7%

male vs 48.7% female.

• Social grade profile remains steady with 6 in 10 of all

listeners more well off (ABC1). ABC1s account for

61% of the total R2 audience (=). Equal record high

for listeners in the AB groups making up 29.3% of

audience. The station continues to do well among

the underserved C2DEs – edging up slightly again

this Q to a significant 6.05m listeners in these social

groups.

• Unfortunately no in roads in reaching BAME

audiences with reach among them edging very

marginally downwards this quarter: at 559k; a small

decrease of 12k listeners, now making up just 3.6%

of all listeners.

• Digital listening to Radio 2 has increased this quarter:

42.9% of all listening is via a digital device. Over half

of all R2 listeners (8.51m/55%) listen to R2 via a digital

device each week (stable on the Q). DAB remains

key digital platform, accounting for 34% of all

listening vs only 4.6% on DTV and 4.4% via the

internet.
