Recruitment and Retention of Perioperative Nurses in the COVID Era Debbie Ebert, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR, CCRN, CPAN, CAPA Corporate support provided by

The COVID-19 pandemic thrust the profession of nursing into the spotlight and illuminated the challenges that nurses face in their work environment including increased workloads, physical exhaustion, lack of personal protective equipment, and anxiety. Even prior to the pandemic, nurses were experiencing burnout with approximately 33% of nurses leaving the profession within two years. Now more than ever, it is critical for nurse leaders to have knowledge and skills to recruit and retain talented perioperative nurses. Nurse leaders should understand the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace, provide mental health support for perioperative staff members, and promote wellness and resilience to prevent turnover.

True Leadership (1 CH) Pamela S. Hunt, MSN, RN, NEA-BC What is true leadership? Is it servant leadership, authentic leadership, or transformational leadership? Does leadership require you to take the lead or lead from behind? More importantly, what does true leadership make you, and others, feel like? The COVID-19 pandemic has shown a bright light on true leaders as they were called upon in the most difficult of times. This session will explore the characteristics of what a true leader “looks like” and how they make other people feel about their work and achieving their passion!

Rethink Your Energy (1 CH) Natalie A. Johnson, CPT, CWC Human energy is one of our most valuable resources, yet many fail to manage it effectively. There is continuing change in the healthcare environment along with organizations who are asking more of their employees. Without the right training, the demands on energy exceed capacity, resulting in poor performance, disengagement, health issues, and poor work-life balance. This session will introduce a science-based energy management training solution that has worked for high performing leaders, world class surgeons, athletes, and military operations. This system enables individuals to manage and expand their energy, meet demands at work and at home while not sacrificing health and happiness.

Building Back Together (1 CH) Pamela S. Hunt, MSN, RN, NEA-BC One of the top competencies of leadership is the ability to be a transformational leader. Transformation doesn’t mean having all the answers, it involves inspiring the team to problem solve, work together and achieve what is possible. Often listed as a critical requirement, but seldom discussed, are methods to begin this transformation with a team. In the past 18 months, many have lost focus on important metrics, merely surviving. This presentation will discuss how to lead your team from survival mode to creating a better future.

Critical Elements for Managing Supplies During a Crisis (1 CH) Kathy Mulhern, MSN, RN; Linda Akiens-Castiglioni, BSN, RN, MBA; Theodore Pletta, BS Strengthen your facility’s ability to implement an effective supply management during a crisis. Participants will learn strategies to effectively manage supply disruptions. The session will provide an overview of a supply chains incident command center team structure, roles, responsibilities, and processes to support the healthcare organization during an unstable time. Members of the command center provided integrated resources and knowledge to increase multi-disciplinary communication and problem solving at an enterprise level. Participants will be introduced to analytical tools created to increase visibility of supplies across multiple campuses, which supported focused purchasing and an improved internal distribution model. The session will review knowledge gaps, current state, and lessons learned during Mayo ClinicsClinic’s effort to prepare for new care protocols and testing needs, while ramping-up hospital ICU capacity and returning the surgical departments to pre-crisis volumes.

Using Financial Incentives to Promote Team-work and Productivity in the OR (1 CH) Christopher G. Bejil, MSN, RN, CNOR, CSSM, CENP, NE-BC Learn about Gittell’s Relational Coordination Theory and how it can help your OR establish goals, provide feedback and tools, and meet productivity performance benchmarks. The OR must run efficiently to remain profitable and of value to its multiple stakeholders. This OR struggled with teamwork and efficiency (first-case on-time starts, turnover time, and last-case out times) resulting in a negative impact on the bottom line. A performance-based incentive bonus program was introduced to improve OR efficiency. Gittell’s Relational Coordination Theory helped the OR establish goals, provide feedback and tools, and meet benchmarks. Productivity performance data revealed incentives are successful in improving productivity. Turnover times dropped an average of 20 minutes, on-time start percentage increased by 25%, and last-case out times

fell 2 hours/day. Improved productivity reduced daily hours worked, yet surgical minutes increased by 50,000/yr. Limitations: absence of qualitative comparative data, unreliable retrospective data, and the lack of a true quality improvement framework. OR leaders will gain knowledge to improve operational efficiency in the OR.

Beyond the Image of Diversity: How to Create a Culture of Inclusion (1 CH) Dima Ghawi, MBA, Certified Professional Coach Many organizations view diversity as a statistical goal, achieved by strategic hires and exemplified by a picture-perfect workplace. However, a diverse team without ties of inclusion and a sense of belonging fails to fully harness the true advantages of diversity. In this keynote, Dima Ghawi shares information she has gleaned from hundreds of interviews and workplace surveys to teach leaders and business professionals how to create a welcoming and inclusive workforce. Through humorous stories and engaging group activities, Dima highlights the insight of a bottom-up approach, the influence of courageous office culture, and the power of affinity groups. Audiences leave with actionable takeaways which can be employed to create a more productive, engaging, and inclusive workplace for all. Retained surgical items (RSI) remain the most frequently reported sentinel event to the Joint Commission with surgical sponges recognized as the top retained item. During this session, healthcare professionals will discuss the impact of retained surgical sponges (RSS) and the implementation of safety initiatives and adjunct technology to protect patients, caregivers and the hospital system. An AORN representative will also provide information on the new RSI Safety program and guidelines releasing later this year with the goal to eliminate this preventable medical error.

Give Me My Surgical Teams! Using Predictive Analytics to Manage OR Staffing, Service Proficiency, and Get Ahead of the Succession Curve (1 CH) Jason Goodwin, MSN, MPH, RN, CNOR At a large research organization, our perioperative team struggled with the challenges of maintaining service proficiency, and often had to settle for surgical service competency instead. With surgeons favoring service specialized teams, we lamented the daunting task of trying to keep proficiency, manage staff “favorites,” and to get a line of sight into the impending retirements for succession; until we got the data! We used an automated, daily data collection process to obtain intel of where our staff was spending their time, what was actually needed for service staffing, and what the data says about our readiness to service our surgeons. The results were surprising but empowered conversations, identified opportunities, and gave a clear picture of what we needed to do and how. Our managers instantly had actionable data that they instinctively could use in their decision making. It was transformative.

aorn.org/goclear

When you enter our ORs today, you no longer smell surgical smoke but clean air. We no longer have staff complaints of nausea, watery eyes, or headaches after any surgical cases since the inception of the AORN Go Clear Award Program™. The staff are much happier and no longer complain about the smell in the ORs and hallways. We became smoke free because it was the right thing to do for our patients, staff and our surgeons.“
