In March our new partnership with Northumbria University was launched and we are now developing new projects that will enhance the

student experience and create more opportunities for artists and creative businesses in the region. The Schoolhouse, Live Theatre’s small business incubator, is now complete and we are negotiating with creative businesses to fill the available space.

Our partnership with Port of Tyne extends throughout our birthday year. Tyne by Michael Chaplin, Port of Tyne’s writer-in-residence, opens at Live Theatre at the end of June as part of the Festival of the North East. Forming a springboard for the play is Michael’s book Tyne View, which was produced with the support of Port of Tyne. The book documents his twenty day journey walking up and down the Tyne’s river banks meeting people, capturing the history of, and thinking about the future of the river.

Look out for two plays in the autumn; Wet House by Paddy Campbell and Cooking with Elvis by Lee Hall, which will run back to back and share the same cast members. Wet House, a dark, funny tale of life in a hostel of alcoholics and their carers, is by Paddy Campbell, an exciting new writing talent nurtured by

Live Theatre’s writing development programme.Cooking with Elvis returns to Live Theatre 15 years after it was first produced here having been written when Lee Hall was Live Theatre’s writer-in-residence. Lee’s The Pitmen Painters comes to the Theatre Royal, Newcastle in July as part of its UK tour.

I am also looking forward to Alistair McDowall’s Brilliant Adventures opening here at Live Theatre in June, his outstanding one man play Captain Amazing going to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer as well as our high energy Youth Theatre Festival in August.

Finally, I’d like to thank all the writers, artists, staff, trustees and supporters that have helped make Live Theatre possible. In 40 years we have produced nearly 200 plays, many of which have travelled nationally and internationally, worked with thousands of young people and helped develop the talent of some of the finest writers, actors and directors of their generation. So, if you’d like to support us to continue this important work, please consider joining our Friends scheme (more details on Page 29).

Best wishes

Tyne

A Live Theatre Production Written by michael chaplin directed by max roberts designed by Gary mccann moving images by Phil Shotton musical director kathryn Tickell Journeying in time and space along the banks of the Tyne this brand new play maps the epic history, atmosphere and soul of this mighty river in story, music, film and images.

Commissioned as part of Live Theatre’s 40th birthday celebrations, Tyne features the stories of some of the greatest writers of the North East who have collaborated with Live Theatre since it began in 1973.

Created and edited by Michael Chaplin, the play dramatises extracts from his book Tyne View, woven together with stories from Tom Hadaway, Julia Darling, Alan Plater, Sid Chaplin and Lee Hall. Illustrated with evocative imagery of the river, Tyne is accompanied by live songs and music inspired by the river compiled by musical director, Kathryn Tickell.

As Port of Tyne’s writer-in-residence, Michael Chaplin walked the tidal length of the Tyne with artist Birtley Aris, photographer Charles Bell and poet Christy Ducker in July 2011. Tyne draws on stories from the people they met on their journey, recorded in Tyne View.

Wet House

A Live Theatre Production Written by Paddy campbell directed by max roberts designed by Gary mccann How do you keep your head when everyone else is off theirs?

“So what brings you to the care industry? And please don’t say you want to make a difference.”

When Andy, an idealistic young graduate, gets a job in a wet house, a homeless hostel where residents can drink alcohol, he is plunged into a twilight world where the rules about what is right and what is normal have become a little blurred. And that’s just among the other staff.

A comedy tinged with sadness and tragedy, Wet House tells the story of how to keep your head when everyone else is off theirs. Based on his own first-hand experience, Paddy Campbell’s startlingly original first full length play asks who will look after the people that no one else will look after?

Playwright, Lee Hall said: “It’s fitting that in its 40th birthday year Live Theatre have unearthed and commissioned yet another exciting new writing talent. Paddy’s play possesses a subject matter that is important and prescient, his characters smack of authenticity and there’s a searing emotional depth to the piece that is both arresting and heart breaking. He’s also seriously funny – it marks a highly impressive debut.”

THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER TO SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER

cooking with elvis

A Live Theatre ProductionWritten by Lee Halldirected by max roberts designed by Gary mccann Sex, food, rock ‘n’ roll, and a paralysed elvis feature in this hugely popular play by Lee Hall (The Pitmen Painters, Billy Elliot). Premiered at Live Theatre to great acclaim and subsequently performed all over the world Cooking with Elvis has been revived in a brand new production as part of Live Theatre’s 40th birthday celebrations.

Jill’s fanatical about food. Mam still thinks she’s a peach and dad’s a vegetable.

When an amateur Elvis impersonator is paralysed in a car crash, his wife and daughter are forced to cope with the aftermath. Jill tried to replace him by cooking. Mam tries to replace him with sex. Unfortunately, they both try their talents out on the same man.

Part knockabout farce, part cookery course, and part philosophical investigation, Cooking with Elvis is a homage to the King of over-consumption and a heartfelt exploration of loss and longing.

In this provocative and hilarious play, tragedy rubs shoulders with a farcical love triangle, classic 70s Elvis songs and the odd fry up.

‘Remarkable… shockingly funny’ The Guardian.

Artistic director, Max Roberts said: “Cooking with Elvis is one of Live Theatre’s greatest hits, so in our 40th birthday year it seemed appropriate to revive it here in Newcastle for the first time since its premiere in 1998. That it has been produced extensively nationally and internationally since our premiere is a testimony to its universal appeal, emotional intensity and wild and anarchic humour.”

A new version of a fast-moving, dark comedy by award-winning local writer dick Curran, following its sell-out run at the Low Lights Tavern in North Shields last year.

Mike and Dawn are a middle-aged couple struggling to deal with empty-nest syndrome and the recession. When Ross, the young rising star at work, is dumped by his wife, Mike decides that it’s a good idea to invite him round for a drink and some company.

Weather to FlyWritten by Allison davies Presented by OddManOut

What’s really going on with debbie, Joe and Chemical? Fifteen year old debbie dreams of flying but can’t explain what’s going on inside her head or why she’s scared of the spoon in the toilet. Maybe big brother Joe can help, just as soon as he’s sorted things out with Chemical.

Secrets come to light but who holds the key? Perhaps it’s the cloud birds.

Weather to Fly was a festival winner at ARC Stockton’s Short Sharp Scripts in May 2012. Toast, an earlier version of the play was presented as part of Live Theatre’s final Short Cuts celebration last year and has now been developed by Allison Davies into Weather to Fly, her debut full length play.

FRIDAY 29 & SATURDAY 30 NOVEMBER, 7.30PM

Beats Written and performed by Kieran HurleyPresented by Show And Tell and The Arches

A one night journey into a world of state repression, chemical excess, teenage longing, police violence and communal euphoria against the desolate backdrop of post-industrial Scotland. With techno. Lots of techno.

Based in 1994, as the Criminal Justice Act effectively outlawed raves by prohibiting public gatherings around amplified music, this poignant performance explores rebellion, hedonism and the irresistible power of gathered youth.

Beats was scratched at Live Theatre in November 2011, won a Platform 18 Award at The Arches Behaviour Festival before a sell-out run at the Traverse Theatre at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
