LIVE UNITEDOUR WORKIn 2018, working with various community stakeholders, United Way set new primary goals to continue addressing the root causes of poverty in our community and to create lasting, positive change:

• To ensure all children are school-ready by kindergarten and are grade-level readers by 3rd grade.• To eliminate child abuse and sex-trafficking in our communitities.• To provide access to all persons in need of mental health services.

Key to our work are programs funded through our Community Partners which contribute to our mission of GIVING • PEOPLE • HOPE.

COLLABORATIONSIn addition to its work with the Community Partners, United Way continues to collaborate with a variety of coalitions and partnerships that address issues consistent with our priorities. These include 2-1-1, the Coalition of Community Assistance Volunteers/Free Tax Prep, the East Lubbock Community Alliance, the Emergency Food & Shelter Program, the Human Rescue Coalition, the Mental Health Coalition, the South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, the South Plains Homeless Consortium, and the Texas Hunger Initiative.

COMMUNITY STATUS REPORTIn April, United Way published the 2018 Community Status Report, the 19th publication in the series. The report provides statistics in health, safety, education, economics, and population for the area. There are comparisons to state and national statistics, along with trends over a period of years. Access to this information leads to better awareness and understanding of the underlying issues and problems facing the community. Readers see the progress or lack of progress that has been made in the areas of concern. In addition, resources can be raised and invested to achieve long-term, sustained community improvements.

LUBBOCK COUNTY

In 2017, United Way funded programs impacted 119,060 lives across the South Plains Region. To put this in perspective, that’s a little less than half of the population of the City of Lubbock. Children, parents, and grandparents are better equipped to live to their fullest potential because of the remarkable support of United Way donors and volunteers—because of you.

2018 ANNUAL CAMPAIGNAt the Campaign Kickoff Luncheon in August, Mayor Dan Pope charged us all to be experts in the hope business. This became our challenge and our refrain throughout.

The annual campaign represents a huge collective of businesses and individuals coming together to raise awareness and support for some of the Lubbock Area’s most pressing issues. In 2018, 733 volunteers helped run 273 workplace campaigns, including 11 new campaigns. The Kickoff, Mid-Campaign Report, and Victory Report luncheons featured community-wide collaborations like United We Read and an inter-district choir from Lubbock, Frenship, and Lubbock-Cooper ISDs performing the National Anthem. Additionally, for the first time, several companies ran volunteer projects alongside their campaigns, including building hygiene kits, prep work for United We Read, and book drives.

To date, the Lubbock Area has given $5,824,983 toward the 2018 Annual Campaign.

LIVE UNITED GOLF TOURANMENT

In September, United Way hosted its 11th Annual LIVE UNITED Golf Tournament at Hillcrest Country Club. The 2018 tournament raised $115,700 toward the campaign total. In the 11 years of the tournament, golfers have raised just under $1 million dollars for the annual campaign.

In addition to the tournament itself, United Way raffled a package provided by Alderson Lexus for a pair of lucky golfers to attend the Lexus Champions for Charity tournament. Congratulations to Ryan Curry on winning the raffle. Ryan represented United Way at the tournament this past December.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LOANED EXECUTIVE PROGRAM

2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the Loaned Executive Program.

In the course of 50 years, over 1,600 men and women have given their time and talents toward ensuring the success of the United Way Campaign. Starting with a goal of $32,000, the Loaned Executives have raised $65.7 million since 1968.

In October, Loaned Executives past and present marked the anniversary with a celebration at the Social House. The

event featured a video produced by Ramar Communications with interviews of Loaned Executives from every decade.

JACKY PIERCE CHARITY CLASSIC

The 27th Annual Jacky Pierce Charity Classic put on by the United Family raised a record $431,000 in 2018. Funds are distributed between United Ways within United’s opperational territory. Thanks to the United Family for giving $101,536 to Lubbock Area United Way.

GO BLUE LUBBOCK

Partnering with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention, United Way kicked-off National Child Abuse Awareness Month in April with Go Blue Lubbock, a community-wide project to promote child abuse awareness and prevention. United Way continues to make ending child abuse a major focus through community efforts such as Go Blue. The latest statistics available show child abuse rates on a decline but still well above state averages.

DFPS STATEWIDE LISTENING TOURIn May, Texas Department of Family & Protective Services (DFPS) Deputy Commissioner Trevor Woodruff and Associate Commissioner Sasha Rasco visited Lubbock as part of a statewide Listening Tour.

Alongside Senator Charles Perry, State Reprsentative John Frullo, Mayor Dan Pope, Catholic Charities, the Parenting Cottage, and StarCare Speciality Health System, United Way presented information that will allow state level decision makers to better understand the unique needs and challenges the Lubbock area faces in regards to child abuse and neglect. The tour also reinforced the value of our local family-strengthening programs, child abuse prevention programs, and the need for more support for these types of programs on the state level.

In 2017, Lubbock County had 1,032 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect. The majority of these victims are under the age of 3. One victim lost their life in 2017.

Women United members continued their advocacy work, expanding their mentoring program through Catholic Charities’ Parent Empowerment Program, presenting Lunch & Learns on child abuse and sex trafficking, and participating in a number of community events.

SUMMER READINGIn the summer, United Way partnered with local nonprofit organizations, libraries, and school districts to create a comprehensive calendar of summer reading programs and events available to keep kids engaged and help prevent summer learning loss.

During the summer months students risk losing 2-3 months of reading skills if they aren’t engaged in learning. This is called “summer slide.” Summer learning loss affects all students, but disproportionally impacts low-income students, which can contribute to an ever-widening achievement gap.

UNITED WE READIn September, more than 500 volunteers read the book The Little Red Fort to 3,535 second-graders across the Lubbock, Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper, Shallowater, and New Deal Independent School Districts. Every child went home with a copy of the book and a craft, including 138 books in Spanish.

The purpose of the event was to highlight the importance of students being grade-level readers by third grade. At this juncture, students who have not mastered basic reading skills will begin to fall behind in every area of study as classrooms shift from learning to read to reading to learn. The event also emphasized the importance of parents reading with their children.

United We Read volunteers represented 93 different businesses, nonprofits, civic groups, and local governement departments, including the Lubbock Police Department and Lubbock Fire and Rescue.

DAY OF CARINGIn June, the 2018 Loaned Executives teamed up again for Day of Caring, brining literacy activities to children and families at Early Learning Centers, Guadalupe Parkway Neighborhood Centers, Literacy Lubbock, Lubbock Boys & Girls Clubs, and The Parenting Cottage.

As part of United Way Worldwide’s Day of Action, the Loaned Executives joined more than 400 local United

Ways in making their communities a better place to live.

This year an estimated 150 children received a new book to take home along with other items donated by the Loaned Executives and a number of local business.

UNITED WAY YOUTH DIVISION

In 2018, 145 United Way Youth Division members completed 1,530 volunteer hours benefitting 14 United Way Community Partners.

The youth division is made up of 9-12 grade students respresenting nine local high schools. Students participate in monthly meetings where they learn about United Way and its Community Partners, complete service projects, and sign-up for additional volunteer opportunties throughout the month.

FALL BOOK DRIVE

Thanks to the employees at Parkhill Smith & Cooper, Friends of the Lubbock Library, and Dr. Rich Rice, United Way Community Partners received new and slightly used children’s books to stock their libraries and give to clients. Approximately 4,000 books were donated.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Chairing the 50th year of any program would be a daunting task, but Kelsey Tubb approached the challenge with grace and determination. Six years ago, Kelsey began volunteering with United Way as a Loaned Executive. Since then she has served in several roles within the program, including chairing the Jumpstart Division in 2017 and chairing the Loaned Executive Division itself in 2018 for the program’s 50th anniversary.

Whether its leading a meeting of Loaned Executives, assisting with a workplace campaign, or reporting at a Campaign Cabinet meeting, Kelsey consistently brings her own brand of leadership to the task. She inspires others to give their all in every moment. Throughout the course of the campaign, it was clear a more perfect person could not have been found to chair the Loaned Executives in the 50th year. United Way is thrilled to recognize Kelsey Tubb as the 2018 Campaign Volunteer of the Year.

PARTNER AGENCY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Greg Freeman first became acquainted with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lubbock through the South Plains Lions Club where he has been a member for more than 30 years. Through the Lions Club’s sponsorship of the Ted Phea Boys & Girls Club in East Lubbock, Greg has volunteered as a painter, a carpenter, and a hot dog cook. He has also helped with free eye screenings for members at the Ted Phea club.

Greg’s involvement through the Lions Club led Greg to serve on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Club. Over more than 15 years of board service, Greg has held many positions, including serving in the president role twice. He has also been an advocate for the new club being built in west Lubbock that will bring club services to Frenship ISD for the first time. Because of his many years of dedication to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lubbock, United Way is pleased to honor Greg Freeman as the 2018 Partner Agency Volunteer of the Year.
